I know this isn't auction related but topics of this nature are often discussed here. That and I didnt know where else to post it. Anyways here goes...

I bought a game off a CAG for $6. I live in Canada so I like if people can keep declared values low and mark as gift if they feel comfortable in doing so. Anyways I didnt think with this transaction it would be a problem as it was only six bucks. I don't remember any dialogue between myself and the other party surrounding the customs form or anything but I figured on such a low value item it didnt need to be discussed. Fast forward to friday when I got the game in the mail. I had to pay about $8 in tax on it. Why did I have to pay $8 you may ask? Well because the person sending it to me put the declared value FIFTY DOLLARS. He marked the game I paid $6 for as being worth $50 so I got taxed on it. My question is am I in the right asking for some kind of a refund or something? I can't even imagine why anybody would do this outside of just being malicious. How do I handle feedback on something like this? I contacted the CAG on Friday and they have so far ignored my communication with them. Any thoughts on what I should do here or should I just eat the extra cost and leave them positive feedback?

Has the other guy traded internationally before? Maybe he wasn't aware of customs. Either way, it makes zero sense for him to say its worth $50 when its actually worth $6. He is responsible for at least $6 of that tax. If he keeps ignoring you, I would definitely leave a negative.

that tax is basically what you paid for the game itself...
no way would i just eat the cost, ask for a refund, it is likely that the person was not aware of this tax.

Maybe the person didn't understand Customs practices. My thought was that maybe they were thinking of it like the $50 would be a replacement cost. Not necessarily applicable, but that's the only thing that really makes sense.

Why would someone overdeclare it to you just to stick it to you? Doesn't make sense.

Was it insured? That's usually the minimum value for insurance...but there's no way you should eat the $8.

Just curious - what game was it?

it was just sent via first-class mail which has no insurance coming to canada as it has no DC either. The game was Zoo Keeper.

I'd definitely ask for a refund... I could understand adding a few bucks to it but declaring $50 for a $6 game is ridiculous. I'm guessing he/she confused declared value to be insurance.

Zoo Keeper never sold for $50....
You can fill out the form from this link:

I think it's better to get the money from Canada Customs rather than the seller, even if it's more work... better the government's money instead of a fellow collector. Just let the seller know for future reference about how we get taxed.
I already have it filled out and ready to mail tomorrow. But I doubt they will give me any of it back. I guess we'll see. The Seller in question still has ignored the e-mail I sent him and the PM

Well. under normal circumstances (spelling i know) i would agree with rlek2, BUT the seller isnt even replying to your communications so i say neg feedback him/her and get a refund if possible.

Open communication is a must in any online seling/buying/trading.
