Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I thought maybe they could know from Club Nintendo, since the games get registered there.
Yeah, good call. I've heard they sometimes use this as proof you owned stuff if your 3DS gets lost/stolen, but who knows. If they had any sense, it would work as you say--we'd just all have accounts that state clearly what we own, and we'd be able to use it on whatever system we want.

That is just plain silly talk! I really, really hope Nintendo gets on with users who want this. The ability to share funds between Wii U and 3DS is a step in the right direction.

Yep, I'm fine with little steps. I think what I'd like for starters (which everyone says) is a true account system like exists on every single other gaming service. Even if I could only download my stuff to one system at a time, that's better than nothing.

I would be fine with that too! I'm worried Nintendo won't give up the opportunity to resell Super Mario Bros etc. to you multiple times, over various consoles and handhelds. With the not great outlook of the Wii U, I'm afraid they will look at the short term gains and choose not to close those revenue sources.

I was about to disagree with you and argue logic, but then I remember Nintendo does not operate on logic. :) To me, it seems they'd secure sales if they actually did create some kind of cross-play thing. I'd imagine that's one reason Sony did it, to get Vita sales, and Nintendo needs to do something to get Wii U sales. I love Nintendo, but (here it comes) their strategy of releasing a system with no good games, then trickling them out a year later and expecting success annoys me. I still think they just got lucky with the 3DS. These systems should be launching with new Mario and Zelda games if Nintendo wants to really go turbo. 3DS had a rough, rough launch and an awful first year. You'd think they'd have learned from that.

Oh well. Sorry. I rant because I care.

One advantage he forgot, you can get rid of your Wii if you transfer to Wii U. The process takes for fucking ever. Seriously, it's stupid slow. I want to say it took somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-90 minutes for it to transfer for me.
You must have a lot of Wii stuff. Mine took about 10 minutes.

Exactly! Nintendo does not operate on logic. I also think that a cross buy scenario would increase sales. Hell, I've purchased quite a few PSN games largely on the ability to play at home or on the go with Vita. While this would mostly help them with VC sales, I would be much more apt to spend money on eShop games if I could play them at home on a Wii U and on 3DS while in transit. Now as it is, I am very particular about which system I buy VC games on. This makes me hesitant in general and second guess the purchases.

Also, why doesn't Nintendo have a larger VC catalog especially with SNES (and when will GC games come?). If they don't have the current software to make people want it, make it a nostalgia machine and tempt me into replaying my youth.

I had almost all the blocks used plus a few things on the SD card. Also, the Wii U is far away from my wifi source so that may have slower it down depending on how much communication Nintendo was doing over the internet. I've since purchased a USB to Ethernet adapter. I can't believe that fucking thing doesn't have an Ethernet port. I've got an Ethernet over coaxial adapter and a switch hooked up behind my TV do I can get my full Internet connection 50 megabit) in the room.

I have to think that there was some hurdle in porting VC stuff to the Wii U (and 3DS). It doesn't make a lot of sense otherwise. Seems like they'd have to be fools not to move the entire VC library to the Wii U. But, again, they don't operate on logic, and the VC never operated on logic. They trickle the releases out, and half of what gets released is worthless when there are still absolutely hundreds of great games they could be releasing.

It's all very frustrating.

Here's what I don't get, people port these things illegally all the time. Why can't they just farm this work out and pay per job? Those guys are going to be doing it anyway.

This guy was able to make it work online no problem by himself. Nintendo just isn't putting forth the effort.

Hell, they could probably just pay him to port their games in his free time and get more games out the door than they do now.

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense.  Sigh.  I always want to think there's rhyme or reason, but Nintendo seems to operate on their own logic.

So the other day you said that the gamepad has a sensor bar built in. I just tried to use the gamepad as my sensor bar in Wii mode and it wouldn't work. How does this work?

Hmm, well, you just have to be a decent distance from the gamepad, and kind of prop it up (or be standing above it), then point the Wiimote right at the gamepad.  The menu screen is a good place to test it out.  Just point right at the gamepad and you can move the pointer around.

I can't even get into Wii mode without having the TV on because you have to select either "TV only" or "TV and Gamepad" and that's only displayed on the TV.

If you're using component cable, you can hold B on the gamepad while booting the system to boot right into Wii mode. This doesn't work with HDMI. I have no idea why.

You'll have to use the TV to get into Wii mode, but once you're there, try pointing the Wiimote at the gamepad.

I use HDMI. I did try pointing the Wii remote at it but I was close to it, didn't know I had to be far away.

Yeah, the Wii remotes have an IR camera installed to detect the two light sources (I'm assuming LEDs) emitting from the sensor bar / Gamepad.  The Wii software has to see both LEDs for its full range of motion for it to work, so too close and it won't detect both at the same time.  Likewise too far and it won't either, which you can crank up the sensitivity of the camera to compensate (but then it can start picking up ambient light / reflections which screws it up as well).

My &*^%^%*(&(&%##%&*() gamepad won't respond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not trying to deal with sending it into and this is no help: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/system_wiiu_gamepad.jsp?menu=screen_and_image&submenu=wup-gamepad-ts-screen-freeze.

Looks like it's going back to the store if Nintendo's phone line can't help me fix this thing.

How do I save Wii U games saves? I'm on World 7 in SM3DW.
You can move a save to an external card using the data tool in the settings menu, but call Nintendo first they may swap out the Gamepad.

This is one huge reason I would never buy a Wii U. It's a "split system", really: half is the console, half is the gamepad (and the gamepad probably accounts for almost half of the total console bundle cost). Thus if your gamepad breaks (or is lost or stolen), you're screwed! Nintendo charges $150 for a REFURBISHED ganepad, which is insane. You can't just walk into a Best Buy and buy a new controller, or easily order one online (for a reasonable cost).

Not sure what Nintendo was thinking when they designed this thing, but I doubt that they understood the kind of problems that would come up.

And yes, I know there are other controllers for Wii U, but without the gamepad, half the functionality is gone. Too much was put into the gamepad, and sadly that took away a lot from the console itself (in terms of console specs and features). And that's probably one of the main reasons that it just isn't doing well.

How many times can you keep saying the same things across several threads?

You don't like Nintendo. We all get it. Now move on.

Its very relevant to the discussion at hand though. I guess you'd prefer people act like good communists, and just follow the party line? Never question anything, never ask for better products, never discuss anything negative at all? You'd do well in that kind of society, it seems.

No, but you just keep posting the same rehash every, single time. Not even when its warrant. Hell you do it in deal threads when that kinda of talk is not needed.

I think you might just have your talking points in a text document and any time you see "Wii U" "3DS" you go in there and copy and paste it to the thread, lol.

And omg, you seriously pulled the communist card. Can't wait till the Nazi card comes out, XD

And you get your panties all in a bunch anytime ANYONE ever posts ANYTHING negative about Nintendo. Pot, meet kettle.

Nope, mostly just when

A) its just blatant trolling.

or

B) Its you posting it since you take any chance you can to post your thought. Honestly, I don't mind so much here, but when you do it in a deal thread, its really uncalled for and just derails a thread meant for deals.

How about we make a deal. You can most whatever you want in this thread and I will leave you alone and not even comment, as long as you stop posting it in deal threads that does nothing but cause fights when its not needed.

I bought a launch Wii U and experienced issues with my gamepad about 3 weeks in where it just wouldn't connect to the system unless I was within 2 feet of the system and facing it directly. I ended up sending in the gamepad and received a new one with in 10 days. No problems since. It is a bummer but I suggest sending it in.

Need some help. Have 400 points left on my Wii Shop account, and since they don't convert to WiiU for whatever reason, I wanna get rid of them. I currently have Smash Bros., Kirby's Dreamland 3, Nobunaga's Ambition, Paper Mario, Kirby 64, Strong Bad Episode 1, and Zelda LttP. Prefer Action, RPG, and platformers and I don't want any games that have been remade (a la Ocarina of Time).

ha I think I still have the max 20k pts on wii or something and at least 2 x 2000 wii pts card that I can see.  I need to set up my wii one day and do some mass purchasing.

Why not just put them on ignore and be done with it?

Only having 400 points is a problem, as the minimum for just about everything worthwhile is at least 500 points. If you have either Mega Man 9 or 10, you can get the DLC for that. Or if you have Rock Band / Guitar Hero, you can buy songs for 100 or 200 each. I know if I had exactly 400 points, I would get the Bubble Bobble Plus DLC pack for 400, but obviously you need to have that first for 600 points.

If you don't want to waste those points and don't mind buying more, you can buy more Wii points in $10 increments directly on the Wii Shop. Or if you find a 500 Wii Points card (or even the 2000 Wii Points cards on clearance from a place like Sears). With more points you could plan out the math to not waste the points, otherwise just let them languish for now until Nintendo comes up with a solution.

Sorry I'm not much help otherwise though.

I wish Nintendo would just let us buy Wii Shop Channel stuff from the Wii U eShop using the same balance.  Or at least change the Wii Shop Channel so you can "add needed points" instead of buying in increments.  It is really sort of laughable.  I feel like it's 2002 (nevermind the fact the Wii came out in like, what, 2006?).

There are still a ton of Wii VC games I want, personally.  I wish they'd just been able to move the whole Wii VC to the Wii U.

*whine whine whine*

I don't mind adding points, I am just unsure which stuff to get. Most of the SNES games I am interested in I either already bought here or have the physical copy of. The N64 games are minimum 1,000 points. I can't really get into NES games anymore for some reason. Was thinking about Breath of Fire.

Breath of Fire II? That's on the Wii U eShop, keep in mind, so if you want the Wii U version, you'll actually save money by just getting the Wii U version instead of the Wii VC version, then upgrading.

woops wrote this an hour ago and didn't post it

Oh, if you don't mind adding more points, then I would toss out the following that fits the selected Action, RPG, Platformer category.  I'll only recommend Wiiware games, as those are the least likely to get ported over to the Wii U eShop:

La Mulana (of course the 1000 point price doesn't help much for you)

Fluidity (It's been offered for free on CN two times now, but its worth it to buy, one of my favorite WiiWare games)

Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth (again, 1000 point price doesn't help much)

Blaster Master Overdrive (1000 points is the sweet spot again)

If I was to recommend a VC title, I would go for either Chrono Trigger (for obvious reasons, it took forever to come to the VC, let alone the eShop) and Secret of Mana (one of the best options if you want to go three player co-op)

Oh, I almost forgot about Monster World IV, for 900, only available in the states digitally anyways.

Is Blaster Master Overdrive any good? I seem to recall enjoying the original game way back when.

And Chrono Trigger is a great game, but available on DS... so I went that route.

If anyone is looking for a fun, original WiiWare game, I highly suggest Jett Rocket. It feels like it could have been released on disc, but for 1000 Wii Points, it's well worth the price of admission. Shin'en, the makers of the Nanostray and Nano Assault series, made the game. The sequel is on the 3DS, which after playing this game, I may just get.

Thanks. I'm going to call them and, if they give me an answer I want to hear, I won't take it to the store and sling it through the window like that old lady in the tire commercial.

I mainly recommended it since it fit the requested category (and its exclusivity), but its one of those "if you can overlook its faults it's good" kind of games, which the review scores are across the board because of them. 1-UP has the most balanced review out there if you're curious.
I LOVED the original NES game and was excited to give this a shot. The Wiimote is a poor substitute for the NES pad though and relies on the B button under the remote a little too much, made some controls a little clunky. The worst is the save system though, which becomes quite tiresome as it gets harder towards the end. In part because of awkward controls, be ready to replay segments between saves because save locations are spaced out way too much.

It was good, but it could have and definitely should have been better.

245K (Dreamcast, November 1999)

192K (Dreamcast, November 2000)

259K (Dreamcast, November 2001)

225k (Wii U, November 2013)

Big thread about it on GAF. Check the NPD thread.

BTW I am a Wii U owner, so I'm actually concerned. I hope Nintendo isn't going to pull the plug in less then four years. That would hurt. Is it going to even last 4 years?

Nah, Wii U and Nintendo home consoles will be done before the end of 2014. Going to he handheld only soon.

I'm a Wii U owner now too. Bought my Wind Waker bundle on BF for 225. That said, I still believe the console will be discontinued.
