Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I hope the NNID working with the 3DS eShop means that they're going to be able to link your NNID with eShop purchases, for situations like losing your 3ds or whatever.

Not yet.

For now all that's being done is linking your "wallet" between Wii U and 3DS so you don't have to maintain to separate balances.

But it does lay the ground work for hopefully tying purchases to accounts rather than consoles in the future.

Nothing mentions those with multiple 3DS systems. Do they all link? One links?

My girlfriend wants her own NNID, and that's fine. One of the 3DS units in my house is hers. The others are mine.

Found my answer after browsing Nintendo's website. One 3DS unit per NNID.

fuck.

Has anyone here replaced a battery on a 3ds xl? If so, where did you get it and how difficult was it?[/quote]
U can buy a battery pack at store.nintendo.com. Never tried replacing battery but i did buy my 3ds xl circle pad pro from them.

And i believe theres a video in youtube on battery pack installation.

Hi everyone! New 3DS XL owner here. Actually bought it about 2 weeks ago now during that Best Buy 2 day sale. (Got the blue one.) Have now grabbed a few games and starting to play with it more. A couple of questions though:

1. The hinge thing...from what I've seen mentioned, the fact the hinges are a little loose (have some movement/play) is normal? We have a DS Lite in the house and it is not that way? Meaning, you open the screen and then if you move/shake the DS in your hand, the lid does not "flop." Whereas the 3DS XL when you open the screen if you move/shake the lid may move up & down a bit?

2. Screen protectors. At first, I was not going to bother. I mean when I had it closed and held it up to eye level I could see through it and don't see how wither screen could be hitting a button or other and getting scratched. However...I didn't take into account all the dust that can accumulate particularly on the lower screen. So I may reconsider. I saw recs for Hori screen protectors? Is that the one to go for? Will I have any problems if I can manage to put screen protectors on my cell phone?

3. Finally...what does everyone to about wireless settings when playing DS games? What I mean by that is our home network is WPA2. It does not have a guest network (using AT&T Uverse modem device). Due to all the other devices in the house I really can't go switching from WPA2 to WEP whenever I want to play a DS game and have online access. I'm thinking my solution is to take an older wireless router that's in the closet and add it to my network and set it to use WEP? (Disable broadcast SSID, MAC address filter) Or would it be better to grab a cheap USB wifi adapter and plug it into my desktop PC (Windows 7) and bridge it to my wired connection to create basically a software AP?

I guess that is it for now. Games I've picked up so far are: Pokemon X, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart 7, RE Revelations, Harvest Moon A New Beginning, and Paper Mario Sticker Star. (Between the WalMart "glitch" and Target's B2G1, I've managed to pick up several games at good prices quickly!)

Thanks CAGkrazy, I'll check it out.

@texasnightowl
1. Mine has slight play to it, didn't notice it until now.
2. I would recommend screen protectors, HORI has some good ones, and just be sure to take your time and get them on right so you never have to worry about them. If you plan on getting an aluminium or NERF case you should look into outer decal protectors to put on first as those cases can scuff up the 3ds. I use screen protectors, an outside decal with a design and a clear case. I'll post some pics later

1) Yea the screen play thing is normal. Don't sweat it. I haven't noticed it being physically weaker there.

2) Hori screen protectors are the best. Play-asia. I don't use them because I don't scratch up my screens. Hell, my 6 year old hasn't scratched up her screen. Your call though.

3) I haven't played a DS game in years. Let alone any DS games worth wi-fi'ing.

BTW, you realize that you chose basically the MOST time intensive games out right? The only one I wouldn't have gotten is Harvest Moon. It wasn't very good. I would have picked up Rune Factory out of that set. I also didn't care for L.Mansion but that's a personal thing. I don't play the R.E. games so no position on that one at all. Welcome to the world of the 3DS.

Hori SP can be bought on Amazon.com for $8~$9

The clear case protector on amazon is pretty nice.

Hadn't even looked at an aluminum or NERF case but do please post pics of the clear case. I'd be interested to see. Is there a best site for decals? I hadn't looked into that either.

re: SP's...yeah, like I said at first I wasn't going to. I don't have SP's on my ipad (but do on my phone). So I'm still on the fence about adding an sp to the 3DS.

And yes...time suck games. Seem to be the type I like. I should like platformers more than I do but I never finish stuff like Super Mario Galaxy which is why I haven't picked up 3D Land yet.

BTW, new Special Mii being sent out. And this one has pink pieces for the Pokemon puzzle.

This was my 10th Special Mii. Yay.

Downloaded the new Sonic and Lego Marvel demos. Not feeling Sonic. Surprisingly, Lego Marvel is the first Lego video game I'll consider buying(wasn't pressed by any others I tried). Probably for the Wii U, though.

Also, I was watching the Marvel Pinball 3D video in the Nintendo eShop and it made me jump! That video is LOUD!!!!!!!! Loudest I've ever heard my Pikachu XL!!!!!!!

Reminds me of the Vita and how Sony should have made QSound mandatory for all Vita games! QSound in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max(PSP) is loud and sounds like surround sound!

Thanks for the rec to decalgirl and the pics. How easy are the decals to put on? How does the case impact feel/use? Pretty minimal?

On another note...dang the bottom cover (the large blue piece that covers basically all of the bottom) is a bit loose on the left side around the volume slide. My thumb slid around over there and I noticed I could basically start to pull the cover away with just my thumb, not even just the fingernail. I did some quick googling and this seems farily common?!

Dang, I just realized today that Daigasso! Band Bros. P came out in Japan recently:

Darn region lock. Though at least this time, we can go to the BandBros. web site and listen to the uploaded songs there.

The decals are really esay to apply, except for the one that goes on the inside top screen because the thin line part at the bottom can be a pain to get on straight, and if you need to peel it off to adjust it it will pull off the screen protector. Also, the one that goes on the inner hindge was too long so I had to trimm it.

The case feel great and its light, very minimal, although it would likely break from any significant fall, but its better than nothing.

The more I've used my 3DS XL, the more I wish the game card slot was like the Vita's slot with a cover over it to prevent the game card from popping out so often.

Same here. Sometimes I can't carry it in my pocket so it goes in my laptop bag or briefcase. Sometimes things shift... it happens. So I have to ensure I save before putting it places because it has happened a couple of inconvenient times.

Yeah, there's been many a times I've accidentally popped a game out while carrying it.

Supposedly there's an accessory available in Japan to solve this issue.

New 3DS XL owner here (ALBW rocks!) and I really could use a case or pouch -- any suggestions aside from the ones at Amazon? Does Walmart, BB, Fry's or even GameStop carry decent ones?

For those who haven't been to the eShop in a while, Nintendo has been running "Character Sales" every week. Right now all NES MegaMan games are $3.49

Upgraded my Onyx 3DS to the Zelda 3DS XL and everything went without a hitch, my Ambassador content is still there woo, after I remembered my wifi password lol but I want to know how to transfer from one SD card to the next. See the new Zelda 3DS XL comes with a 4GB card and my old one is 2GB so naturally I'd like to move everything to the 4GB card while still having all my content. Would I just have to use a computer for this?

I'm like 90% positive that I copied the drive to a folder and then the stuff to the new card on my computer. So long as you copy (rather than move) you can keep the status quo should there be an opps.

K, thanks I'll give that a try later then.

Update: Well I copied the old card to a folder on my PC and then inserted the new card. Copied over to the new card and when it asked I merged the duplicate Nintendo 3DS folder. Loaded up the new card on the 3DS XL and everything looked good except all the software I downloaded was gone. Hmmm, guess I'll download everything from my download history then. Crap, are my saves gone too (dling Zelda: A Link Between Worlds now) are gone. So initially everything transferred over but since I had to change SD cards I lost it.

Sounds like we may be getting the NNID/Miiverse update this week, since there's some planned maintenance tomorrow night. So the System Update might be pushed out on Tuesday.

Next weekend (December 14th and 15th) is "National Streetpass Weekend" for the US, when all of the Streetpass Relay points will be set to send out Streetpass data from anywhere in the country.

The Miiverse/NNID system update was put up a few hours ago. It's a pretty big update, as it:

- Adds the NNID settings to the Settings Menu.

- Adds Miiverse to the Main Menu, in the upper-right corner. You need to register/link your NNID first. You can post a screenshot to the appropriate community by going into Miiverse while in a game and attaching the current screen of your suspended game.

- Changes the Camera app's quick-start method to L+R, instead of L or R.

- Removes the 5 system transfer limit.

- Minor fixes/system stability/etc.

Version 7.0.0-13U available via wireless Internet connection includes the following improvements:

Added Support for Nintendo Network IDs:
Users can now create or link a Nintendo Network ID, which is required to use some network services, from within System Settings
Nintendo eShop has been updated to support Nintendo Network IDs (*1)
For more information regarding Nintendo Network IDs, please visit our Nintendo Network ID introduction page

Added Support for Miiverse:
Users can now view and post to Miiverse from Nintendo 3DS family systems
For more information regarding Miiverse, please visit our Miiverse introduction page

Added a Software Update Notification:
A notification will now display when software is started and update data is available (*2)

Removed the limit to system transfers:
The previous limit of five system transfers per system has been removed

Changed the start-up method of Nintendo 3DS Camera from the HOME Menu:
Pressing the L and R Buttons simultaneously will now start the Nintendo 3DS Camera from the HOME Menu

Improved system stability and usability:
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

*1 Credit card information stored on the Nintendo eShop will be deleted after this update is performed or after linking a new Nintendo Network ID
*2 SpotPass must be enabled to use this feature
Tried out the Screenshot functionality with the Super Mario 3D Land Community (It's viewable in 3D on the 3DS Miiverse):

You know, I thought I wouldn't like Miiverse without the PM support which is what I really wanted, but with the ability to basically have a Facebook-like system where your friends can follow your posts and comment on them, and with Miiverse allerting you (allegedly) when you get a notification, it's not that much less useful than PMs.

I would like it if the Nintendo servers would stop being too busy to update my eShop and Mii Plaza, but I guess I can do that tomorrow.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Miiverse runs in the background on the 3DS. After the huge letdown when they announced that it would not allow you to friend other Miiverse users from the 3DS or send private messages, I just figured that there was little likelihood that it was going to run in the background, since that would have made it just about as useless as possible. Nintendo did pretty well.

I'm happy about Miiverse on the go because I love using it on the Wii U, but what I'm really excited about is that hitting one of the shoulder buttons will no longer bring up the damn camera. That has caused so much annoyance for me.

The bad thing about not getting a Wii U and being able to create a NNID right away is that all of my usual usernames are already taken. :whistle2:( I have the hardest time coming up with names, so I always try to get my name, my name backwards, Miiranda, or any other variation without having to use my middle & last initials. Now I gotta think of something that I won't get tired of later on.

Definitely agree with ZombieToast about just one shoulder button opening the camera app. I'm glad they made it both buttons.

For those who haven't been to the eShop lately, they have 3D versions of four Genesis gams, including Altered Beast and Sonic 1. Sonic is the remastered version (i.e. can use Spin Dash).

I'm glad that I'll never open my 3DS XL again to see the camera app launched because I dared to have my finger on the shoulder button when opening it.

Those must be new, the last time I checked it was Space Harrier and Super Hang-On. After a quick google search I found these...

- 3D Altered Beast
- 3D Ecco the Dolphin
- 3D Galaxy Force II
- 3D Shinobi III
- 3D Sonic The Hedgehog
- 3D Space Harrier
- 3D Streets of Rage
- 3D Super Hang-On

Definitely an improvement from Nintendo. A few steps in the right direction with this new update. Still a bit silly to be able to link a single 3DS system to the Nintendo ID. I have a 3ds and so does my son. It would've been nice to have a single wallet attached to both. But, after many years of asking for this, I'll take the progress.

Absolutely. About dang time!

I was worried about something like this. Right now, I have a 3DS XL (Pokemon edition) that I'm going to soon transfer the account over to the 3DS XL (Zelda). I specifically did not yet link my NNID to the Pokemon 3DS just in case I somehow can't transfer it from one to the next.

Or, maybe you can, and, I'm just paranoid? They are pretty backwards on some of their online processes.

The account would transfer. Transferring essentially leaves the old 3DS a blank slate.

BTW, I love the new expressions in StreetPass Mii Plaza.

MiiVerse on the 3DS feels a little like PS Home... a lot of time to set up for a virtual lobby where there isn't much to do. If I was in high school and all my friends had a 3DS / were posting regularly I could see the fun, but it just feels like a poor man's Twitter. Am I missing something?

It's more like a basic message board with forums dedicated to every game, which is more likely to see activity than random GameFAQs pages for less popular games.

Personally, I love Miiverse because people share a lot of great drawings on there and it's incredibly useful for requesting help. Like with Scribblenauts, someone could just post a screenshot of the scene and ask for hints. It's faster on Wii U and there are a few more features, but the 3DS version is still pretty neat.

That first time going into the eShop after attaching the Nintendo Network account to my 3DS is quite a long load time. I hope that's just a one-time thing.

This evening I've tried transfering my 3DS files from one 2GB SD card to a 4GB one.

Then I encountered a problem. It claims that there are duplicate folders. 91 items of duplicate folders with the same names. I don't know what to do or how to fix this. If I change anything, I fear I'll lose tons of save files or something. Any ideas?

Nintendo's latest eShop sale has some good games on there this week. Liberation Maiden (which is fun but very short), Attack of the Friday Monsters, and Crimson Shroud are all on sale for $4.99.
