Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

How bad is the pixelation on the 3DS XL? I've looked around for comparison, but haven't had much luck. I'm used to my retina Macbook Pro and high pixel density phones, so I don't know if I can deal with it on the XL.
The best thing to do would be to try out demo units for a decent amount of time. The XL kind of bothers me after a while when I tried it out when it came out. I recently played the M&L demo until I beat Bowser boss at a GS, and it wasn't that bad. I guess some colors/games are worse than others when it come to the pixelation etc.

Thanks. I'm usually not that bad, but I've found that after we got retina macbook pros I've become a bit of a screen snob :/

The standard 3DS looks pretty sharp though? I'll have to drive around this weekend and see if I can find demo units of both.
Checking for demos is the smart thing. I've tried both. Bought an XL. If you're a "screen snob", you'll be better off with a Vita.

If you get to see the 3ds & XL screens side by side, you might be like OMG! Even see the size difference in YouTube vids is dramatic.

I sacrificed a couple of pixels for the awesomeness of the larger screens. Yes, some games are more noticeable than others. But not having to squint makes it so much better. I DO miss the better speakers on the regular 3DS. These just don't have the oomph. Would I be able to give back my XL? No. I quite like it. My hands don't cramp anymore. The screen's much bigger. I like.
Yeah I definitely prefer the bigger screens. Already hard to get motivated to play a portable over something on a console on the 55" TV, and the regular 3ds screen is especially tiny.

Speakers on all portables are terrible, headphones are a must IMO.

Well it looks like swapnote is basically dead as Nintendo is taking away all online functionality that swapnote has, way to go Nintendo, just discontinue a feature because a few people choose to abuse it with inappropriate images or whatever. I definitely won't be buying a Wii U this holiday season.

Between the supposed releases of Miiverse 3DS and Flipnote, I'm not that surprised.

Less surprised to know that Nintendo doesn't know how any messaging system will have some people sharing a bit too much on it.

No more notes from Nikki and others at Nintendo. :(
And not even with the courtesy of writing a Farewell note.

"Nikki, your things are in this box; drop off your access card with Security, turnover any remaining notes to the Miiverse division, and vacate the premises immediately. If you fail to do so, security personnel will be forced to escort you away."

Street pass!

:(
Streetpass on Swapnote drives the connection time past what most are willing to hit. It causes inconsistent hits often.

I tested it on my systems. Unit 1 might tag Unist 2, but 2 won't get a tag from one. It happens fairly often when Swapnote is involved.

(snort) I love my WiiU.  You know how often I've been playing and the significant other wants to watch TV... push of a button and BAM it's on the controller and I can play to my hearts content.

But that has ZERO to do with Nintendo disabling Swapnote until they can stop the spread of inappropriate imagery.  Which I appreciate as a father.

2 different things.

Pretty sure if you don't want your kids to see inappropriate imagery, it's pretty simple to use parental controls and view the content before they do.

I really don't want them to make swapnote slower just so they can check the content of what's being sent. Especially since I'm perfectly okay with my friends sending me pictures of 3D wangs. It's kind of what I figured swapnote would be used for in my group, since it's completely useless for arranging to play games etc.

This has to do with Nintendo policing the adults that use their system, though if they launched Miiverse on the 3DS I would forgive them for this. I don't want a Wii U if they are going to pull shenanigans like this. It would be easy enough to disable swapnote at system setup so users could choose whether or not to enable it.

I get the impression that if Nintendo had an account system that tied into these different services on the 3DS, they could've just banned those that sent inappropriate images rather than just take the entire service down.

People use swapnote? Feels like one of the more useless things on my 3DS, oh well, I suppose I'm not a fan of taking things away. Maybe they'll surprise us with something better in the near-future.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 LE 3DS XL

Thank god this isn't coming out till February, with these new consoles coming out I already have plenty of money going elsewhere. I'm a HUGE Dragon Quest Monsters fan, so it will be my utmost goal to get my hands on this. And I'm still holding out hope that the DQM2 remake will get localized here. Or hell, even localizing the remake they did of the original DQM would get me excited.

Swung by a McDonald's last night, got 4 hits via the relay. All had Pokemon X or Y as the last game played, and none gave a hit for the game itself.

Gotta love that.

I miss Dragon Warrior.  Nothing more fun than trying to score Edrick's armor as a level 2 warrior. Stupid Golem.  It still haunts some of my nightmares :)  That's character design.  A sprite that bugs you in your sleep more than 20 years after you played the game.

To be fair, of all the games I have, I think the only one with lamer streetpass rewards is Super Street Fighter IV, and really it's kind of a toss-up.

Uh SSF was the fighters correct? I think Kid Icarus gave stuff for SP hits as well.  I thought they were fairly useless.

I've owned pretty much EVERY 3DS game and now you've got me thinking about it...

I have a blast with Street Fighter streetpass and spent more time than the main game.  I build up a pretty strong team and only lost once.

That's cause those of us at launch were the rare few.  The title had outlived it's playability by time they did the price drop and more people bought into the 3DS.

I'm considering getting a 3DS XL on Black Friday. Is there anything I need to know? I have a 3DS with Ambassador stuff (not that I play any of it...). I think I heard somewhere that all your Streetpass people don't transfer? Is that true? Is there anything that doesn't transfer? Swapnotes? I've got all those Streetpass games, and I sure don't want to lose my progress or hats.

Are there any good black Friday deals worth mentioning? Toys r Us has a nice $20 off regular 3DS but that's all i can find, GameStop doesn't have anything similar. I'm looking to get an XL on BL, But the lack of deals is discouraging.

Anybody that likes classic platformers should check out VVVVVVon the eShop. I beat it the other day and enjoyed it for the 3-4 hours that the main campaign lasts, though you unlock several more campaigns after that point that offer new challenges if you want more.

Thanks everyone for letting me know that everything will transfer if I get an XL. For some reason, I had thought I heard some things didn't transfer.

Does anyone have any regrets? Wish they hadn't paid the difference for XL? Or think it's not really a huge improvement?

Just standard gripes...

The audio is a bit worse

SOME games can look a bit more pixel-y.  (personal preference)

It's bigger

My pros:

Bigger, so it fits an adults hands

Bigger screens, better to view stuff (no more squinting)

Bigger screens also don't hurt my eyes nearly as much with the 3D effect on\

I can't imagine Kid Icarus on this thing but I LOVE it.  And I imported the CPP so I could play Monster Hunter on it.

Nintendo sells the Circle Pad Pro XL via their online store @ http://store.nintendo.com, so no importing necessary.

Now... not before.  And NOT in time for the Monster Hunter launch.  It was a couple months after the launch than NoA/Reggie got off their haunches and brought it over.

So my 3DS is pretty much busted. Too many hard throws from a 23 month old. Bottom screen only displays a black screen and two lines.

I thought I was being smart by buying the extended warranty from Target, because I knew the kids would likely break it.

However, since it's only been 6 months it's still covered under the manufactures warranty. (According to Target Extended Service)

So next i call an 1-800 #. How effective will this be?  Will they quickly replace my :3ds: will it matter that it broke due to a drop or fall?

You will likely have to send it to Nintendo and they will just issue a new one. All info will be transferred over if they can.

Do note that before you send it in, take out the SD card, game card, and stylus. And take off any screen protectors.

Also, buy some NERF Armor for the 3DS.

The important question is: Do you have any eShop purchases on the unit?

If so, you'll want to go through Nintendo for your repair. They're the only ones that can transfer your purchased content between units.

If Target requires you to give them your busted hardware for it to be replaced, you'll lose any purchases you've made on the old hardware.

This is definitely true, though I don't particularly care. I notice the sound is a bit off when I'm playing music (to be fair, I'm also playing music generally through a headphones->cassette setup, so it'll sound crap anyway)

.

I have found that if you're going to use the standard controls, a great way to play Kid Icarus without too much hand fatigue is to lay down and set the 3ds on your chest. Playing that way, I can generally go for a bit before I get too tired. Worth noting that I'm 6'8" and have gigantic hands to begin with, though, so ymmv.

According to today's Nintendo Direct, a new 3DS System Update coming within a month will have:

1) Nintendo Network ID support. Use the same NNID to share your eShop wallet balance on the 3DS and Wii U. A NNID will also be required to download demos and free apps. Those were the only features announced so far.

2) Miiverse.

EDIT: Looks like 1) has a side-effect: you can't switch currency (e.g. go from Euros to Pounds). Your eShop Country will be tied to your NNID, and any funds in any other currency will be deleted. Not much of an issue for people in the US and Japan, but notable for Europeans who switch between Euros and other currencies. So for EU peeps, be sure to spend any non-native currencies in your account before registering your NNID.

Along with the release of a Youtube app.

They also made a page for the next four weeks' sales:

http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/offers

This week's sale features the VC NES Zelda games for both 3DS and Wii U, and Link's Awakening DX for 3DS.
