Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Amazon's matching steam on Fallout Vegas - I'll probably wait and see what Tony's gonna do with these.

Also, there's DLC quest  ($.98) for a last minute coupon; this is actually funny for a couple of hours.

I can't find my crayons or I'd post this using some obnoxious color ...

Question is: Who would actually WANT all the Magicka DLC?
Me! Magicka is an amazing game. Picked 'em all up individually rather than in bundles too. Had the game since release. I haven't got the book yet though.*

*[edit]

Just downloaded a sample to my Nook so might be getting it after I finished my current book. :D

I picked this up back at the beginning of the sale and it's honestly kind of fun. Just be sure to go into the Options menu and enable WASD movement because controlling your troopers and simultaneously shooting with the mouse really sucks.

If you like the idea of moving comical little army guys around on a map, completing objectives then it's worth a shot. There's also a bit of depth in choosing the classes you take with you, spending points on upgrades in between rounds, and characters that earn XP but can die and are replaced with new recruits.

Google Play gives out lots of free music.  Most of which I have no interest in but I've also collected quite a few good/new tunes from there as well.  A 5% success rate still equates to a fair number of good tunes given how often they offer stuff.

I want it so that every of the many, many times it constantly goes on sale I don't even have to look or think about it.

Really, I wish they would make it F2P with microtransactions so I can safely ignore it. My hoarding OCD compels me to have to get DLC for games I own.

No!! F2P is horrible. :D

I think Wizard Wars will be that way though.

So I need some help.

February 2013 I bought a digital download of Tomb Raider from amazon.

I got an email today stating there was a technical error with my credit card and they are now charging me; almost a year later.

Is this even legal since it's almost been a year? (I was not charged prior but I also didn't even notice not receiving a charge)

You're not the only one - see the last few pages for other people in the same situation. As far as I can see, it's completely "legal".

Same thing happened to me. You should get a $5 credit from them as compensation. Not sure if you have to email them about it or if you'll get it automatically.

Maybe this will overdraw his account, and he needs to dispute to stall.
Nope.

They cant just charge you almost a year after purchase. That makes no sense. It was a problem on their end as I have used my credit card for thousands of dollars of purchases since then.

Anyone know if Contrast will be the collectors edition on the 3rd?

Steam now has the base for $7.49 and the collector's edition for $9.99 (art and soundtrack)

Amazon's current price is $11.24.  It looks like that is for the base version.

If you promised to pay them for a product, gave them your credit card info, and they gave you the product, then yes they can just charge you a year after purchase because you still owe that money.

There's nothing to dispute. The CC company will likely just give you a courtesy credit if the amount is low enough, but you wanted something, you got it, and now you have to pay for it. Pretty simple.

If you have such poor accounting of your credit card that you didn't know a if a charge went through or not, no one should have any sympathy for you. Yes, it's poor business practice, and Amazon is offering a credit for the mistake, but keep up with your own finances better than that. Putting in a dispute to a legitimate charge (even if delayed) is just a good way to get a black mark on your credit rating.

You used this thread to discover that this is a legit issue and other people have been having it. Your desire to refuse to pay for goods rendered, is something this thread cannot help you with. You'll need to take that up with Amazon Customer Service and your Bank.

While I don't argue that even a year later you should have to pay for the product .. even if Amazon made a mistake ..

I completely disagree with how they went about just charging peoples accounts.

What if that charge put me into a negative .. is Amazon going to pay my overdraft fee?

Or similar situation that late charge puts your account fund lower than another charge later that day causing again your account to be overdrafted.

Amazon should have contacted all the affected customers BEFORE taking that charge.

This would allow people time to research this charge .. making sure that a mistake actually happened and that charge did not go through. Not just take Amazon's word for it.

So I was going to leave this out, but because this other issue cropped up here, I'll mention it. My experiences with Amazon CS have been pretty amazing. The last problem I had with an Amazon item was when they recently (~ 12/17) updated the Android Kindle app and broke it for many users. A lot of folks had trouble accessing their Kindle libraries and couldn't log in. The update was supposed to force a re-login due to some changes in the code, but even after rebooting my device, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, clearing the cache, and following all of the other available suggestions, I was getting nowhere on my Nexus 7. Finally, I contacted customer service and they told me it was a known issue that was being worked on. Oddly enough, shortly after I left the chat with that rep, the login worked and I was able to access my books. Moreover, Amazon gave me a $20 credit just for being a PITA.

Kudos to Tony and his brethren in all of the CS areas at Amazon because they do a pretty great job in my experience.

Thanks.  On the fence on picking up Contrast.  I'm sure some have bought it, but any opinions from anyone that has played it?

Probably been asked a million times in here already, but does DLC count as EC purchase? I bought a few pieces of Borderlands 2 DLC over the past month on Amazon.

Why would it put someone into the negative? If the account is balanced then the money should be in there, regardless. The person authorizing the charge is responsible for ensuring the funds are in place.

It's okay. It's really a question of whether the setting does anything for you since that's probably the biggest draw of it. Game play is okay -- I haven't had any problems with it but nothing about it makes me say "You need to play this, it's so much fun!" You're Dawn, a circus acrobat. You follow a little girl named Didi. She's the only one who can see you and you can only see her; everyone else you just see their shadows. Her mom is a famous singer at the clubs, her estranged father is a shady jamoke with big schemes trying to make right for his wife and daughter. You follow Didi trying to solve their story and reunite her family.

Do you like 3D/2D platformers? You'll probably enjoy it a bit since it has that. I'm not a huge platformer person to make comparisons though. The fade-into-shadows gimmick is entertaining although it also means you can get finicky control problems when a puzzle has you switching back and forth somewhat rapidly.

Do you enjoy a 1920's era setting, torch songs and a dreamy-noir milieu? Well, it has that as well and that's probably a better reason to get into it since there's a lot of other platformers if you just like jumping from one spot to the next.

I haven't finished it yet. I got (I suspect) about halfway in and decided to hold off since they were doing a large patch every couple days and other complained of bugs. They've since stopped patching though so I assume it's in a better state than it was at launch.

This. Amazon isn't in charge of your accounting. Neither is the credit card company for that matter.

Overdraft protection, if you have it, is something you choose to sign up for and you agree to pay for because somehow you prefer to pay $45 for something than have your credit card rejected. Again, not Amazon's responsibility, not the bank's responsibility - your responsibility.

I agree. It's a PITA. The best way for Amazon to have gone about it would have likely been sending out emails informing people of the mistake, telling them their card would be charged within x days, and giving them the opportunity to change payment method to another valid method if they wished.

Balanced or not we are talking about a YEAR later ... and being charged $5 when I am not expecting it to.

If I only have $4 in my account then yeah it will overdraw my account.
