Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

Only way I think EA would sell KOA:R Steam-version is if EA actually bought Steam.

{shudders at that horrible thought of EA buying-out Valve/Steam.}
See? That's because EA is known for consuming developers, milking its customers and making said developers into...something less than it was.

I'm not saying that I don't own EA games or anything. But, I can say it does affect when and how I purchase their games. For instance, I will not buy them on release most of the time. If they want to milk me with bad dlc and microtransactions and have "bioware points" etc. then I won't pay so much and will wait it out. Or buy the GOTY editions if and when they release them for real cheap.

Sadly, this means the deserving development studios don't get much from me, but I wasn't the one who

sold out to EA either.
wait - u buy games on release?

y u do dis?

how often u do dis?

I don't buy most of my games upon release anyways b/c of DLC's galore, Season Passes, some companies to inevitable Ultimate Editions, sometimes game winds-up Alpha-in-a-box/Beta-in-a-box, games needs more patching, game could be short, game could be unstable and have technical issues, price-cuts are frequent in the digital distribution arena w/ fierce competition, and the list goes on + on.

Whichever you feel most comfortable with. You don't owe us anything. This is your thread. You are THE Amazon rep. the rep of all reps, you are a god amongst mere...

Um, maybe I'm getting a bit carried away, but I think my point can be understood
Wait - so Tony did a remix of Kanye's "I Am A God"? ;)

{Eyebrow raised}

I don't.

And since this looks to have happened while I was @ work, I probably miss'd out on this code-drop!
If you see it, you missed it. That's what I've learned. And yes, I do on occasion buy games on release. The last one was Skyrim. There really hasn't been a game that I am extremely excited for. Maybe Witcher 3.

I've had mixed results from EA reps.

Sometimes they actually listen to you and help; other times they will lie, not help, and outright contradict an online EA user help page. Happened to me and I even did online chat again a few times and still no one that actually helped me. Waste of my time and theirs.

Ubisoft is certainly slower, and Valve support is all but non-existent. I would say its only there on a company level, not on a user level. Meaning, unless you stir up the internets till it reaches Gaben, you can be waiting a month before Valve responds. No joke.

Amazon is like my best friend. They will always listen to you, and have a policy that I call "just make the customer happy". They will listen to you just as good as the NSA.

I mean, most CAGs buy hardly anything at release.
I buy stuff at release if I can manage to stack discounts, coupons, etc to make it at least 50% off and I'm interested in it. I picked up one of the Never Settle bundles for something like $26 and Metro: Last Light for some fairly token amount (via the GeForce card). I figure if I'm going to play it immediately and it's at a price I likely won't see for 6+ months then I'll treat myself.

I don't care much about DLC and GOTYs because, honestly, I rarely go back to a game after completing it. Hell, I haven't even done the BSI or Metro:LL DLC content yet despite buying the season passes and both of those were games I enjoyed very much. I'm certainly not going to worry about DLC for a game I just feel is "okay".

Personally, EA's policies just cause their games to fall out of my train of thought, even the ones I do own. I don't think I've even installed any of the games I got from the EA Humble Bundle. If I was a console gamer maybe I'd pay more attention to Mass Effect and such because my choices would be limited, but my library of RPGs is already so vast I could never hope to finish all of them. So while I have a passing interest in Dragon Age 2 because I vaguely recall there being a Felicia Day dlc, I'm not going to jump through three levels of hoops to play it, and I just forget it is even there until conversations like this one happen. I'm sure if Dragon Age 2 Complete showed up as a killer deal here I'd probably jump all over it, Origin or not (just as I did Amalur during last year's EC), but until that day happens my money stays in my pocket. I don't even bother reading about the Dragon Age 3 info because I know most likely it will end up in the same place.

I'll buy games at release if I'm VERY excited for them. Pre-ordered Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite, and will do so for Dark Souls 2. Those are the only games ever so far.

I'm really hoping that Bioware makes a game similar in quality like ME, DA:O and KOTOR etc.

KOA:R is a pretty cool game, my 60+ year old father plays it on his xbox I got him and he literally can't get off the machine.

Yeah, I have no problem buying games at release. That said, I'll only buy something at release if I am really, really excited about playing it right away. Typically, that only ends up being Bioware games, or in the rare occasion, something like Metal Gear Rising, which released at a lower price point and I could stack discounts to get for $16.

Beyond that, I pick up most everything else around 66-75% off simply because I like to own everything I have any interest in playing, but because I collect everything, I need to keep it within a budget.

Say EA never acquired Bioware. Did you really think they'd keep churning out gems like Mass Effect and Jade Empire forever?
I've read interviews from the founders and they say they essentially got to keep their company culture relatively the same when they were purchased by EA and they were largely left to do things the way they wanted.

I never really got why it's always "EA buys out great companies" and not "Great companies cash out to EA".  I mean, that transfer of money went somewhere and apparently whoever owned Bioware valued the cash over making amazing RPGs.

I still miss Westwood. I actually loved their other games. Lands of Lore series, and even Nox.

By now, I think so, maybe. My future-time-changing-parallel universe-black hole-machine isn't working right now. The Flux capacitor is on the fritz, plus I haven't given it a good name.

Most of the complaining I've read about EA in this thread seems to be focused on Bioware games and Bioware points.  Sounds like its a Bioware problem.  EA's other games don't use a similar system and the DLC is available across different stores and usually discounted along with the base game.

I'm hoping for Tebow to have the first post on a page I view so that I can see if Chrome offers to translate it.

To be fair, MGR wasn't a new release, just a port of a year-old game.

I said way to much about EA and Bioware, it is what it is. Sorry if I upset any EAware fans. ;)
