Wii U - General Discussion Thread

The gamepad isn't essential but it is pretty cool. Works great in Pikmin and Zelda where you need a map. Look, no one who is way into video games can really argue with a straight face that the WiiU is all you need these days but it fills a niche and it is a nice compliment to a PS4/Xbox One. I think that Nintendo know this and is trying to capture a large percentage of both of those audiences - this worked with the Wii and isn't working with the WiiU so far.

The Wii U has a a controller/game library/price point aimed at gaming enthusiasts but a build quality/graphical capability/marketing campaign aimed at the "casual" Wii audience.  The latter points make the system unattractive to gamers, and the former points make the system too confusing for the Wii crowd, leaving the system in a lurch.  Although I think it's cool as shit and one of my favorite consoles of all time, it's clear that Nintendo didn't have a concrete game plan for a post-Wii system and now they're paying the price.  A decade-and-a-half of pissing off third parties sure isn't helping the situation either.

I really hope that they don't abandon the Game Pad for their next system though...best controller of all time, bar none.  All they need to do is fix the rattly buttons and it'd be perfect.

The gamepad is one of the main reason I won't buy it. Of the games I've played on it, none of them used it well enough to justify it over a normal controller. When I played Bayonetta, I played for hours at a time. During the 10 minute demo of Bayonetta 2, I didn't look down at the screen once. When I tried Scribblenauts on it, it was just mirroring the TV. The demo of Donkey Kong was the same; I didin't use the gamepad screen once. So like the Kinect on the Xbox One, I don't like the idea of paying that much extra for something that I don't want.

It also offers no real benefit. It's range isn't great, and I can't use it as a portable device on trips. It adds a ton of cost and weight as well.
I freaking love the Gamepad solely for the off-screen play. I have yet to play Injustice or Ducktales on the TV screen.

Also, don't assume the demo is the same as the full version. Sonic Racing has the Gamepad as a mirror in the demo but on the actual game it is TV-only.

The games are lacking. I understand some people might like playing Mario for 29 years. That's fine, but that group is shrinking. There's tons of award winning platformers out there now, that Mario is pretty basic, and unexciting to most people.
You do realize Mario 3D World was a strong GOTY candidate and was one of the gaming media's favorite games, right?

As for Zelda, remakes aside, the last great console one was what, Majora's Mask? The two Wii ones were more of a turn-off for non-diehard fans than anything.
Wind Waker, actually. Twilight Princess was an attempt to give fans the "realistic" Zelda they wanted in that GCN demo, but most people found it "pretty good" instead of "mind-blowing amazing."

Also assuming we're not talking portables.

Smash Bro. and Mario Kart I see the appeal of, but they're really not my cup of tea. But I'll admit Mario Kart is probably their strongest IP, and I do play it occasionally on the 3DS. But I also got it for free on my 3DS XL.
Switch that around. Smash Bros. has far eclipsed Mario Kart.

For me they could really improve the battery life (ugh) and the wireless range (double ugh) of the Game Pad as well.

If they fixed these two things I know I'd be using the Wii U almost every day because of how convenient the controller is for web browsing, gaming, and streaming media. And the built in headphone jack is awesome as well.

I absolutely love the Wii U compared to the Wii simply because the Game Pad "gimmick" is much more practical to use in a gaming application than the motion control gimmick. The fact that most Wii U games focus on traditional controls rather than motion controls, and there is a full fledged controller dedicated to traditional controls (Wii U Pro controller is a beast) is what excites me for this console. If Nintendo supports this console as much as the GameCube I will be more than happy. It's selfish, but I'd rather Nintendo sell like shit while producing stellar games than sell like hotcakes using motion control gimmicks. Yeah the Wii did have some great games, but I love me some GameCube and if the Wii U ends up being GameCube 2.0 I'm all for that.

It may be GOTY for a lot of people but it's definitely getting IP fatigue. They released how many Mario games over a 1 year period? 3?

You're wrong. Smash Bros is not bigger than Mario Kart. You only think that because hardcore Nintendo fans love it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Wii_video_games

Mario Kart was the 2nd best selling game on Wii after only Wii Sports.

31.89 million Mario Kart games sold on Wii.

11.49 million Smash Bros on Wii.

Smash Bros is NOT a killer app. 1/3 the install base bought Mario Kart. 1/10th the install base bought Smash. Extrapolate that to Wii U numbers and assume a 6 million install base when those each come out and you have Mario Kart selling 2 million and Smash selling 600k. Smash probably loses money.

Perfect example of perception vs reality.

I remember having the same discussion a few years back here on CAG about about two of my favorite games from last gen FO3 & Mass Effect 2. FFXIII outsold both games by about 2 million yet everyone was convinced that FO3 and ME2 were these sales juggernauts. They weren't.

Super mario 3d world was the only Wii u mario game that came out last year. New mario u was a launch title in 2012.

How are you getting that 3 mario titles came out last year?

I was referring to a full year as 12 months counting back from when Mario came out. There was Mario, Luigi, Mario. 3 in a 12 month period.

Well. Mario U was Nov 15th 2012. Luigi U was DLC. Mario 3D world was Nov 22nd 2013 so no. Still not 3 in a year.

NSMB and 3D Mario are different franchises anyways

Brawl suffered from heavy Hype Backlash due to the changed mechanics and from people expecting the game to be more epic than it already was. Hence why the Smash Dojo is much leaner this time around. It's the most hacked Wii game for a reason. Plus, Mario Kart had not just a bundle but a new accessory as well. Melee and 64 were both among the top, if not the top, selling games for the GameCube and N64.

two mario games came out 3d world and new super luigi u yes i know it's not really new game but it had new things and was retail game. it's still freaking mario don't matter if it's not same franchise.

look at all the ads for wii u over holidays it was all about upgrading up. Nintendo is realizing which alot of people here including me said was a issue since launch most causal people that got wii sees wii u has just a 300 doller add on to the wii and don't understand why they should upgrade. At xmas events family member had a wii iasked them if they were going to get wii u and they said well is that not just the new wii design.

Luigi was DLC. You can't fault Nintendo for actually releasing good DLC, lol.

NSBM and Mario 3D are regarded as two different franchise by everyone in the gaming industry.

Even though Burial at Sea isnt a retail release does that man that two Bioshock Games came out last year?

mario is mario don't matter who is main character. 3d world from what i played i loved with that said for me mario games are stale have been playing them for what close to 20 years.

It is still DLC. Its not a new game. Why is that hard to understand?
where did i ever say it was a new game in statement you quoted? the main point of that statement was saying mario is like close to 20 years old same can be said with zelda. I'm still confused how most nintendo fans don't think nintendo really needs to sit down and create new frachises and stop trying to milk brands that are decades old. Only people that would not agree with that are the people that have not been nintendo fans since 80's and even 90's.

Then you get people comparing sony/ms milking franchises to nintendo but you really can't seeing they have not been around for decades.

I've been playing Nintendo games since the NES and I'm not sick if Mario, Zelda et al. I'd like to see some new franchises as well. But I still want those games and they're the reason I still buy Nintendo consoles.

^This. Mario and Zelda are not the problem. They are not what's holding Nintendo back. The 3DS sales prove that a market still exists for these franchises. The Wii U is a failure but the fault does not lie with Mario and Zelda.

Sony doesnt milk. MS sure as hell does.
really? uncharted is not milked which by the way are great games but still milked? every 1st party and 3rd party milks non stop. sony releases titles in their main franchises just as microsoft does The last god of war was nothing more then trying to get a god of war game out before next gen and man was that game bad it was milked.

There was 2 years apart between Uncharted 1 2 and 3. 2007, 2009, 2011. Uncharted 4 wont be out till prob 2015. I don't consider that milking.

Now, halo at first wasnt milked. 2001, 2004, 2007. But since then you had Halo Wars - 2009, Halo ODST 2009, 2010, Halo remake 2011, Halo 4 2012, and Halo Spartan Assault 2013.

God of War games are every 2 to 3 years apart so id hardly considered that milked.

i agree halo is truly milked and i don't even get excited for them anymore. with that said every company has couple titles they know will sell which is why they keep making them. Seems like companys mostly 3rd party are scared to come out with new franchises becuase it cost so much to make games now they don't want to take risk. Seems like this new gen of systems that might be changing at least i hope.

Honestly its not so much a Nintendo problem but more of an Industry problem. EA, Ubisoft, Activision are all scared of making new IPs. Bethesda as well. They didn't want to do dishonored but then it did great now they want to make more of them.

Sony is at least trying to make new IPs. Mircosoft kinda well but my problem with them is they really don't own many first party studios and really none of them can compare to what Sony or Nintendo has.

Nintendo should be in a much better position for taking chances because they are a generation behind with their technology.  Aren't games cheaper for them to develop?  Shouldn't this lead to more experimentation with new IPs?  It seems like they should be cranking out "core" games every other year using the same engines and use the off year gaps to release new IP.

i never really owned ms systems for 1st party games. i do enjoy their first party games on 360 but nothing like i love sony 1st paty games and nintendo 1st party. For me my ms consoles are for 3rd party games and online play and sony/nintendo is my go to for their 1st party titles

well lets hope these issues they now have will really make them make new ip's

When you put it like that, there really is no reason to own an Xbox since Sony pretty much gets 90% of the 3rd party games anyways and the games will be much better this gen on PS4.

Miyamoto previously stated that Nintendo underestimated the amount of manpower needed for HD development. Simply put they did not anticipate the huge leap in development time and budget. See article.

all my friends i play online with have 360/x1 and i feel the community is better with mics and all. Plus i do want to play x1 only gams that have been announced. i refuse to only have one system im a gamer that loves to have the chance to play every game out.

Ive seen the Wii Fit meter at a lot of stores. What are you talking about "no stock"?
Come shop where I live, Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, Kmart, Sears all do not have it, Gamestop doesn't have it and they never even got any shipments of it which is just ridiculous. Yes I know you really can't count Kmart, Sears and Sam's club but still. That is what I have for local retail so what is what I have to pick from if I want to buy something. The fact that they can't get a product which is literately a 2-3 inch box into Walmart and Target is a problem (it would take almost no shelf space). At the very least GS should have gotten one shipment that I could have jumped on.

This probably has to do with the fact that this is a limited time offer but still people who have a balance could buy the digital version and will still need a meter so its not like a small shipment of meters would go to waste.

Close to 30 years old. I was playing Mario in the mid 80s. Zelda in the late 80s.

What's the big deal? People can buy them online.

Same story here - none locally. Luckily, I snagged a dinger from AWD last week for $12 and it should be here tomorrow, with plenty of time to get it registered.

I got Legend of Zelda in 1986. I was the first person out of everyone I knew (in 7th grade) to complete BOTH quests. No strategy guides back then! I just finished A Link Between Worlds last week and it was the best game I've played in a long long time. I don't think I'll ever get tired of the "formula".

It's rumors about the successors to the Wii U and 3DS. Not updated features added to either current hardware. It would just presumably have backwards compatibility.
