Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]

I was able to get Borderlands 2 complete so far for I believe $20.50 or so over the holidays. Not a great deal, but it includes all the DLC released so far. Unfortunately, who knows how much more DLC will be released for the game...
I think they said two more (already announced) because consoles can't handle more.

Otherwise they would probably release monthly until BL3 :p

Question : I got $5 credit and I don't recall how... I also don't recall where to look for the games you can apply that credit to is.
If it's the Editor's Choice credit, that was for January only and it's over.

There's also some 2K credit, NBA 2014, and SR4 credit that people still have I believe.

Lunar Flight Steam Key:
I am actually pretty shocked that I was able to activate the lunar flight key 7 whole minutes after it was posted. Lurkers, you are slacking!

Thanks for the key! I'll drop one too

Madballs in babo invasion 3PGWY-6WZY3-6539E

Madballs Bdi Evolution and scorched evolution DLC 3WP9C-VRW52-D6QJN

It's not that the console versions can't handle more content, it's that they're running up against limitations in the game engine itself when trying to create new experiences. To make better content, they have to develop a new game, with a more advanced engine.

For the lurkers, since noone wanted them. You have to do a little work though.

That's not correct. It has nothing to do with the (Unreal) engine. It has to do with the limitations of the consoles. Here's a quote from one of the Gearbox developers:

It's fairly complicated, but in very simple terms, when we add something to the game, there are usually 2 parts to everything that we add. There's a small amount of data about the item itself (like the name of it, which playable characters can use it, whether it belongs to a specific DLC or not, etc.) and then there's all the data for the actual item itself. The small part of data is considered 'global' in that it resides in memory all the time. The rest of the data is only loaded when that item is actually used in game (like when you activate a skin, or drop a weapon in the world).

Every time we add something to the game, whether it's a new player head/skin, a new weapon, a new class mod, a new enemy, or whatever, you're adding a small amount of data to the game for that new item (which then references where to load the large amount of data from for that actual item). Over time, this grows and grows as things are added. For the PC, this isn't a problem as you have virtually unlimited memory, but for consoles, you have a hard limit on how big the game can get before it starts crashing running out of memory while you play the game.

I'd point out that the 360 has 512 MB of RAM total (not sure how it's split) and the PS3 has 256MB system and 256MB VRAM... so they've got to fit all the general stuff in less than 256 MB of RAM... I'm sure even your old phone has more RAM... (anything newer than iPhone 3GS...) let alone computer.

16gb RAM + 250gb SSD + 1gb vram. I literally have about 6gb of chrome tabs open at home. Well, I did yesterday before one window and all its tabs wouldn't re-open properly. :(

Yeah, that's too many tabs.

Wow, that's small. I had no idea my PS3 had less memory than the average nonagenarian with Alzheimer's.

That was a bug when I tested it 3 weeks or so ago.

One thing to remember with a beta . .especially a MMO .. is what you are playing is nothing near what the release will be with release day patches.

Chances are that bug was squashed it will not be there once the game releases.

90% of the testing that is going on now (and for the last few months) is primarily stress testing. Seeing how the well the servers can handle lots of people. Even the last email I got said to get in on the stress test this Saturday :)

But like most MMO's, or always online DRM games, it will probably fail at launch. No matter how much "stress" testing happens the authentication servers )or something else) almost always crash under pressure preventing people from logging in and playing.
Sadly, that's not always the case anymore and MMORPG's now launch with massive game-breaking bugs and huge balance issues, hence why so many of them fail. Since the internal testing teams are not nearly as good as they used to be, a lot of games now basically unload all content, including raid content, to public testing which unfortunately also has the side effect of spoiling the raids prior to release. I used to love racing for world firsts in Everquest and it was a driving force in keeping me playing, and those days are likely forever gone.

So, basically my ps3 only have enough memory for... Wait, I don't have a ps3

So I guess Tony only likes us during sales :)

There has yet to be a price match on Castlevania yet during the Winter sale and EC sale games where PM'd within hours.

Speaking of Path of Exile, I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet.

Does it feel like a classic, powerhouse open-world ARPG like Titan Quest, Divine Divinity, etc? Or does it feel like an MMO more than anything?

Definitely craving to play the former. I was just going to reinstall one of the games I mentioned, but if Path of Exile is similar... I may give it a shot. Any help?

It's an ARPG with multiplayer quest hubs that make it easier to group up to tackle dungeons, farm for gear, etc. If you choose not to group, then all of the dungeons and overworld areas appear to you as solo instances; you can solo your way through the entire game if you choose.

It feels much more like Diablo II or Titan Quest than standard MMOs.

Alright, so not your typical "go here fetch x, kill x" MMO. Maybe I'll give it a try, thanks.

No social interaction required! But like with most games like this it's better with people even if they are strangers

Stranger danger!
Man don't group with Idio. He'll just sneak invisible and run away from you and type LOLOL in chat while you get your ass handed to you.

True story. ;)

Well, you know me. There's some perverse, masochistic pleasure of mine that insists I do everything solo the first time, regardless of the difficulty.

True story indeed. The whole ass getting handed to you thing was all on you two, though.

Path of exile really has that old school feel. I don't think anything else comes close. A few negatives: The passive skill tree can be intimidating, and learning which gems are good and which aren't can be a pita. Especially since they don't drop often and main source is quest rewards. Also the no currency currency system can be confusing.

I run solo because I don't have any friends who play, and refuse to group with pugs. I have beaten the game solo np. You won't even see anyone else in your game if you run solo except for city hubs.

There are not many quests nor are they good for exp. They are either required or for reward. its not like an MMORPG you'll lvl off them. crawling/progressing through the game will level you.

if you have other questions free to ask. I've spent a ton of time in path of exile.

Diablo 3 kept me going story-wise while Torchlight 2 didn't hold me at all. Does Exile have a solo story worth playing through or are you primarily playing for gameplay?

Still got Path of Exile deals only? :(

BTW, you might not want this, but here goes

R2CDV-MR5KF-1100100001000101110

For the last bit, just do a binary to hex conversion.
