Setting up an Xbox Live Child Account is a Horrible Experience

So I'm trying to set up a child account for my kid so she can play with her cousin.  After inputting a bunch of info I'm told that she can't convert her offline account to an Xbox Live account because she's a child.  Why the fuck didn't they ask me to give the date of birth first if that was a possible outcome?  I'm told I have to create an entirely new account on the PC.

Okay so I set up a new account on my PC.  This obviously means all her game saves and achievements are gone.  Okay that sucks but at least she can use this account to play online right?  WRONG.  I can't get the free month of gold because her account doesn't have purchases enabled.  Okay FINE, I go onto the Xbox 360 and attempt to allow content purchases.  I get error 6 times in a row while trying to change settings.  FINALLY I'm able to enable content purchases after 20 minutes of trying.  I go back to my PC yet again because you can't sign up for the free month for a child account on the Xbox 360.  Back on the PC, I again attempt to "buy" the free month.  It tells me that I haven't enabled content purchase.  I go back to my Xbox 360, sign out, sign back in, and YES it is enabled.  I go back to my PC to try again, it's still telling me I haven't enabled content purchases.  I go to my Xbox 360 to triple check, I can't even get into that part because of errors again for another 15 minutes.  Finally I'm able to check and YES it is still enabled.

I go back to my PC and try YET AGAIN after over an hour of trying to set this up...Now I get this.

Something went wrong

Give it another try. If this happens again, let us know by entering the code below at xbox.com/errorhelp so we can investigate.

I realize that they've taken away a ton of features to force people to buy an Xbox One but I didn't realize they made it impossible to set up new child accounts with online play.  This is, hands down, the single worst video game console experience I've ever had.  I'm mad as hell and the thought of crushing my Xbox 360 with my sledge hammer actually crossed my mind.

Yet another reason to not have kids.
About 3 years ago I helped this same cousin set up her child account so it's not like I hadn't done this process before. I went through it before and while it was somewhat frustrating then, this really takes the cake. Nothing even works now. I challenge you to try to set one up on your Xbox 360.

edit:

Oh and I forgot, you have to log in with your adult account prior to being allowed to create the child account. Even though you have an adult account you have to "prove" you're an adult by allowing them to charge you 50 cents onto a credit card. Assholes.

It is overly complicated and I never got it set up the way I wanted.

what takes the cake is when, after all that, you try to log one of them in and it asks for a secondary security input....every damn time.

I think I need to change some settings online, but I want the extra protection. Its stupid that we have to get a text or set up a backup email every time they log on.

I wish they would pit out a simple tutorial that covers this stuff.

I just made a regular account for my son and set chat to friends only. I monitor his list and delete anyone I don't want on it. It's far easier than setting up a kid's account.

It has noting to do with x1 mr know it all. It's like this for every new account since ms put on tons of account security on the Microsoft accounts. You can no longer get free month with out legit personal info and payment. It's been this way since early last year. Even to log into hotmail at times it has Fort Knox security.
