Same here, but then I found out my broken piece of crap laptop could run Borderlands 2, then things were never the same.

With GTA V announced I guess it's time to buy me one of them fancy gamin' laptops the cool kids have. Anyone have any good recommendations?
As a cool kid with a gaming laptop, I will refer you here: http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-clevo-sager-notebooks-ct-95_51_162.html

Those are some excellent, excellent gaming systems (besides the few lowest end ones with integrated graphics). Don't let the haters get you down, gaming laptops are fucking amazing.

EDIT: Yeah, you probably aren't going to get a good gaming laptop for under $1000.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Yeah, probably not the best, but I won't be running anything intensive. Maybe I can just get GTA V on a console, or rethink this desktop thing, I dunno. Thanks anyway

I'll definitely keep this site bookmarked. My system is running fine right now, but these looks schweet.

That would be great, but with me being a university student I'd rather kill two birds with one stone. Doesn't have to be a $2,000 laptop, just something under $1,000.
Build a computer for ~$800 and buy a chromebook to use in class/on the go (or tablet/laptop hybrid like an Asus T100).

Well... there are a few laptops there under $1000 (before shipping and Windows OS) with 840-860M cards, though I haven't done any laptop research since I bought mine like two years ago, so I can't say much about them. Definitely worth looking into though, pretty much all Clevo/Sagers are really, really solid computers.

I'll weigh both options considerably -- though I am more in favor of an all-in-one computer. There's just something about having a portable media center that can handle everything that interests me. But I will consider all my options, as this is a hefty financial decision.

If money is tight you need to think carefully about what you want your machines to be able to do and what you need them to be able to do, and if you're a student that isn't in a field requiring specialized software, a chromebook is probably all you really need to get by, even if it isn't a particularly sexy solution.

That's what I would do, if I were you. You can buy a tablet/laptop hybrid for cheap and build a separate computer for gaming for cheap as well. Otherwise, you're carrying around 8 lbs of laptop that will be more expensive to upgrade or replace in the long run. And with a desktop, you get to choose your mouse or mechanical keyboard, even ones with dedicated buttons of Razer-branded MMO ilk. I'd especially go the desktop and tablet + detachable keyboard route if you're studying graphic design or computer programming.

Portability is a relative non-issue for gamers on a college campus, unless you want your machine stolen, which was often the case at the colleges I've attended. Desktops incur much less theft. ;)

The biggest thing with a laptop for even moderate gaming is just if you can at all help it (and unfortunately most laptops have them) try to avoid Intel HD Graphics. Unless it's a dual setup like Nvidia Optimus, but most times it's not.

There are a lot more laptops now with dedicated cards. I bought one last year for about $550 with an AMD card and it's been surprisingly capable at playing most everything I've tried on it. If you were to throw a few hundred more dollars in I'm sure you could get something far better too (though I support the idea of getting a desktop and a cheap netbook/laptop/tablet for portability concerns).

Agree there are some at least decent options around under $1000 but I haven't looked in a couple years either. Got mine off Newegg for about $900. It won't play everything great but it does the job and been pretty solid outside a ASUS build issue. Was probably on sale at the time, but don't remember.

(I could post specs, but I hate posting specs because A) not good with specs and B) it sounds like showing off (even with something that isn't worth showing off at all)).

I would've recommended a rocket-ship for GTA5 PC, given Rockstar's (often poor) PC port history (on their release day). ;)
Or after release day (GTA IV is still the poorest running game I've played since getting this laptop, L.A. Noire at least ran okay though)

Nah, I set my buddy up with a lower end Sager for around $1200, and that was him insisting on the one with backlit keyboard, bluray drive, and other bells and whistles I passed on (he could have spent $900-1000 without his choices). Solid video card, Optimus for multi-purpose use and higher battery life, good system, and really light with the 15.6" screen. As long as you aren't going balls out with a 17.3" monster like I have, gaming laptops are light and portable in a messenger bag or whatever (Sager even gives a nice one for free with whatever you buy, last I checked).

Even mine is portable enough for me, I've even traveled with it (personal item carry on) and it's not a big deal. It is heavy though, but I think most of us manly men can carry an 8-10lb laptop around in a bag. C'mon now.

Usually, it takes a bunch of official patches + much newer hardware out there to get Rockstar's PC ports running decent on some worthwhile graphicals setting...maybe. ;)

You must be living under a rock if you don't know about Angry Birds.
Ah, now I understand. No I thought Angry Badgers was some game I missed out on not that I was being told the badgers were a birds clone. I'm still demanding a badgers toads clone though.

Edit: with personalized moves, Chub Chub better have some belly flops and I wanna see gramps pull out a walker beatdown at some point

How many devs have u "interacted" with?
Why do you guys care so much? I do post on forums too apparently, since some people have been commenting on me posting on other forums lately.

He seemed like a nice guy. Polite and all that. That's all.
Not the type of "interaction" I was thinking...

When I was in college back in 't3h d4rk ages' you'd rarely see anyone using a laptop in school.  Even today I doubt you need anything more than the most basic of setups.

In my case, it's more to get away from a jackass roommate, or just for a change of scenery. I never use a laptop in class, mostly because the fan would be louder than the professor.

When I was taking in person classes (well ones that aren't like 5 people), I think maybe one or two people had laptops usually. Community college was about the same, though there it seemed about 5 people actually took notes so not the best example in the first place.

now a day i see alot of people bringing laptops 10-15 in class alot me i only bring i have fucking break if i didnt i dont bring laptop cause i dont like to

Writing notes actually activates different neurological pathways than typing them does. Supposedly its helps people retain information better but I haven't read the study closely enough to see if there was mitigating factors.

Sager makes good stuff. One of my buddies was hemming and hawing over which alienware (laptop) to buy. I showed him the Sager site, and he went full retard with a very nice Sager Laptop PC. Good stuff, but not for me, I'm prone to game on a desktop.

Plus when typing it's a lot harder to make little subnotes and arrows and stuff like that. The only real benefit I could see to typing would be ease of finding things later, It's much easier to ctrl-f then it is to look over 10 pages of hand written notes.

Anyone else besides me and Spodes watch The Strain tonight?

I liked the show overall, but the dialogue was noticeably cheesy and the plot movements were annoyingly predictable. But I thought everything aside from the weak writing was enjoyable (visuals, acting, etc). Will probably stay for the season before I write off the show unless the writing becomes unbearably bad.

I DVR'd it, I'm going to check it out later tonight.

That poster pic makes me slightly nauseous.
That was probably the idea. The visuals/effects were good in the show (as expected based on the people behind it), nothing too graphic imo aside from one scene that got really violent out of nowhere, caught me off-guard big time, but nothing like worms going into people's eyeballs or anything.

Awww yeah, I just bought Viktor for full price! #FakeyBro4Lyfe
It's one thing to pay full price for something you want but to brag about it? You do know where you are, right? :p

Viktor looks kinda cool, but not $10 cool.

That game that looks like old-school cartoons (Cuphead) is something I might pay full price for though. Was one of my biggest E3 surprises.

Blood and guts (at least when they're not obviously real) don't often bother me, but there's something about that worm going through an eyeball - that otherwise looks fine - that I don't like. :whistle2:k

Yeah, that was pretty much me. I was torn between ASUS and Alienware. ASUS' support changed to the Caribbean (wat?) and was absolutely horrendous, but Alienware is fucking overpriced. I had a good amount of money to spend on the system, so I was heavily leaning towards Alienware, but in the end you're paying the price as the next laptop... and giving up a good upgrade. Like the system will be $2000, just like the next one... but the Alienware will have an i5 instead of an i7. That's where Alienware fucks you, they skimp on one or two major components and charge you a premium just because it's Alienware.

That said, they ARE very well regarded systems besides the price, and if you call in on the phone the rep can usually get you a deal. Fortunately though, an old regular here (name Lint, I think) turned me onto Clevos and I was set. They're REALLY good computers, I have zero regrets buying one.

MSIs aren't bad either, and are said to have even better sound than Clevos, but my ex bought a really high end one and the power source went bad not once, but TWICE, so I have my doubts in the construction quality of those.

Haven't watched it yet, but it's recorded. How would you compare it to Helix (if you watched that)?

That's how I felt about the book. I didn't like it that much and chose not to read the rest of the trilogy. Maybe I'll give the show a chance.
