I realize it's not a deal but is anyone else thinking about preordering Defense Grid 2? I adored the first game, so I'm sitting here going '26 dollars...but that's a lot...but it's so good...but it's a lot...but it's so good...'
I backed the Kickstarter for $15 so I'm pretty pumped that it is closing in on release. I still need to go back to the first and try to get all the gold medals.

It's time for me to get out my pitchfork and torch for a change.

Evil Pumpkin: The Lost Halloween was one of those "vote for greenlight - get a free game" deals. You may have voted for it yourself. An additional requirement was that you join their group. Both done.

So I go to check on this game and I find out that, at some point, the developer asked everyone to sign up on his web page and then it got taken down. I may have missed the announcement in my activity feed.

I send the guy a nice email along with a screenshot of my vote and my groups (to show that I had jumped through both hoops, helping him get greenlit in the process.

He sends me back a note that says:

"Hi,

but you didn't provide email to our website as requested and we don't
have you in our database. I am sorry for this."

Am I wrong to be upset?

The point of all of this was to get the game greenlit (which it did), and reward those that helped with a game. I helped. I'd like my game. I sent in my proof, it's simple to verify the date I joined the group from the group admin panel.

I mean... database?? The only database he needs is the member list of the group he demanded everyone join. Why be a stickler dick about it and deny a reward to someone that helped you out? He's clearly not getting scammed - he has the proof.

fuck these guys that try to weasel out of stuff whenever they get what they want.

I was a big fan of the original and I'm certainly glad I kickstarted the game.

Anybody have experience with usb external sound adapters? I got a cheap one for free from that M&Ms free Amazon money thing a couple weeks ago. There is a lot of static when sound plays. Was kind of expecting it not to work because it was so cheap, but it had good reviews and free is free.

Which ones would you recommend if you have experience with them? I'd like to keep the price $50 or under.

Also I'm really glad Chrome is finally getting fixed. I haven't been able to use it in years without my laptop severely dropping performance.

Sounds no different than my experience with some WGN games. There's the extra step of reserving a key at some later time, and it's not that hard to miss the instruction to do so. You don't have to be that cynical to assume the reason for that is to weed out some people that voted for your game but miss the reservation announcement.

[customspoiler=Hal's unpleasant recent experience with a keys for votes offer]

I think the problem is that there's no standard structure in place for this sort of thing and many of these indie developers don't really think things through before they do them. They see other people offering keys for votes and think this sounds like a great idea so then they make the offer. Oh wait, I need to keep track of them all. Let's make a group. Oh wait, that's still a pain to go through manually, let's make a web database. The problem is that inevitably in changing the terms offer after it's made some people are going to fall through the cracks.

I don't think it was intentional (well I would hope not) but having said that they could make exceptions given the circumstances. I know Carl has said that he has (and still does) gotten a lot of bogus requests from people who really didn't vote and that some will even photoshop evidence, but there's also the point is it really worth someone having hard feelings over and then going and telling other people about it, particularly when they didn't have their shit together from the beginning when they made the offer.

The whole business of the keys for votes in general I think is ethically questionable. I'm not criticizing anyone here, I do it myself because FREE GAMEZ! but I feel dirty after I do it.

I suppose given the ridiculously low prices some of these Gala and Groupees bundles with multiple games have been going for they're practically free and it's just a matter of degree. In the past I had justified it that those developers were getting exposure and votes which helped them get on Steam and in turn get many more sales but I don't even think that's the case anymore given the current environment on Steam.

Considering how many hours I have put in to DG1, it is very much tempting, but I am a CAG, soooooo . . . maybe.

Carl and WGN started the whole web database and key reservation that added the extra step and changed the terms of the offer after the fact. He set the standard, and it's tough to point fingers at developers that are just following the prevailing norms.

I've heard that Carl have reported getting faked evidence and I imagine that he probably has. All I know is what I've experienced, and that includes no assistance when requesting help because I didn't reserve keys during the reservation period and therefore my email wasn't on the list.

I'm sure Carl would love to be able to provide support, but WGN has tens of thousands of members so it's really impossible that he would have time to give anyone more than a stock "sorry, you're name isn't on the list" response. Sucks for those that have issues, but that's just how things go.

Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space

Gettysburg

Same deal as Detruire, those are in order of preference if you wanna limit how many I can ask for. I only do so because I've had bad luck thus far and am striking while the iron's hot. :p

I'm amazed you're at $174 though. It's a shame you won't hit $250 in 5 minutes, but it's still a lot closer than I thought you'd get by tonight, gj CAG.

I sent them an email on the 14th about three games that I hadn't gotten, and I received keys for two of the games yesterday. So it took them only 4 days. It's not a lost cause to try, if you're missing some keys.
