SAO Fragment release date is August 19th....I will buy at $29.99 easily but 40 dollars is full physical vita purchase price which I don't feel is good for a digital only game.
I've been meaning to tell you, but I love your Maison Ikkoku avatar.

Yeah, but my point with that post was that the pricing reception everywhere else was also overwhelmingly negative. Even the bargain-naive seem staunchly opposed to it.
Oh, I understand that. I'm staunchly opposed to how much digital movie rentals are, lol. I see them for $5 or $6 or more and don't even understand --- if they were $1 or $2 they could put redbox out of business and I'd rent all the time, but instead the only movies i've ever digitally rented I've gotten for free from promotions. If you asked me, they should drastically reduce the digital prices of film rentals... but since those prices have existed for many years at this point, I can only guess enough people purchase at that price to sustain it, despite me thinking they're ridiculously high.

And to the same end, I figure the pricing of PSNow is actually in line with those rental prices, and for a much more complex/intensive service.

There's going to be a release date announcement of a fairly big PS4/Vita indie game that I know people around here are looking forward to on Tuesday that isn't Minecraft, so keep an eye out for that.
Why did you keep it mysterious? You're talking about Velocity 2x correct?

hey frisky, I recently started playing Arc the Lad Twilight of the Spirits (ps2) and am loving it.  Did some research, turns out there's Arc the Lad 1-3 for ps3/psp/vita on Psn.    Is there any way to tell if they've ever went on sale?  For some reason, i feel like I remember deciding against getting them at some point, but i might be misremembering.

Also, to anyone -- any recommendations of games similiar to Arc the Lad in regards to combat (it's a hybrid of standard rpg and srpg - each unit takes a turn on a battlefield, has movement and attack radius).   In practice it's more technically srpg than rpg, but in overall 'feel' it's more rpg than srpg.

Ah thanks I always get a grin out of your Gravity Falls one...which reminds me new season starts this week! My DVR will get the episode (aired today I think). Kyoko and Godai-kun where one of the most realistic couples in anime and the whole anime touched me a lot. It was one of the few anime to show characters with actual faults and also faults in their relationship. It had ups and downs through the whole series and these were adult characters so they went through a lot of maybes and what ifs and everything. Such a beautiful show and one of the very few where the anime ended and I was like I don't need anymore of this. I rarely ever feel that for any anime/manga ending.

Another thing I want to add is that I liked that Kyoko always had a certain mindset for the relationships around her and without giving spoilers to others always had something on her mind that she was aiming towards. Just like normal people, they have something in their mind and once they get that it's very hard to change it. It only takes a few certain events happening to really get that set in there. I'm referring to the movie which was great as well and required viewing to really appreciate Kyoko's character.

OlliOlli? I cover indie games too u know, its proabably gonna be Nuclear Throne or Issac or Nidhogg or something like that, or maybe even Broforce.

Because I didn't know that the announcement date was public info since the release date itself is embargoed information, but they'll announce it at 10 AM ET on Tuesday.

As for your other question, I believe the closest the Arc the Lad games have been to a sale is a bundle of Arc the Lad II and Arc Arena: Monster Tournament. I can't think of many with similar freedom of movement strategy RPG-style of battle systems, but Phantom Brave, Skulls of the Shogun, and Transistor have somewhat similar systems.

I was trying to research Arc Arena: Monster Tournament and... just basically confused myself. Anyone know if it online only? Or is it viable as a single player game?

I have Phantom Brave in my backlog -- I skipped over it to play Arc the Lad Twilight Spirits because the last game I played was Soul Nomads (NIS) and their games are just similiar enough that I need a break. I didn't actually finish SN yet anyway and still plan on going back to it, just needed a break (much like i'm on break from finishing Nocturne after burning out on it around 80% through).

Skulls of the Shogun appears to be Steam? Added to wishlist, I'll buy it for $3 next steam sale and never play it.

And Transistor is a very high want for me, just waiting for a sale.

It's a PS1 game, so there's no online to it.

Isn't the monster arena game just an add on to Arc the Lad 2?  It's basically worthless on it's own.  I can understand why they're sold together.  Man, I'm so glad I found Arc the Lad Collection in a bin for cheap a long time ago.  That was a good day.  Wish I'd never found a copy of Arc the Lad End of Darkness.  That was a lousy day.

Sorry, yeah, online was not quite what I meant: from the wiki:

"Continuing the compilation is Arc Arena: Monster Tournament. This builds on the concept of data transfer and allows players to trade items and weapons with other players by importing their respective saved games."

That makes it sound pretty worthless to the modern gamer unless you happen to know other people currently playing, which... I can't actually see happening.

EDIT:

actually, found a review of it:

http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/atlc/AtLC_MA.html

It has two 'difficult' single player games within it (arena battles and tournament) as well as 'verses' mode. it uses your arc 2 save file, and anything you win you get to keep in arc 2. both of the modes sound interesting to me (one reminds me a bit of the arena monster battles in Dragon Quest VIII, the other sounds more srpg.

so i guess i'll eventually pick up the bundle.

End of Darkness is no good? Darn, I was excited that there's another one after Twilight before I need to go ps1.

I'm still playing Crimsonland.   I've put countless hours into it at this point.

Stuck in two places --

getting a perfect on 6.10 normal.

finishing 6.10 on grim (hardest unlockable difficultly) --  it's ridiculous

however, having put hours into 6.10 on grim (almost beat it once... usually don't come close) going back to 6.10 on normal feels like molasses, so I'm more confident I'll eventually perfect it.

This game is dual stick bliss. Tons of modes, solid difficulty curve, grim will be challenging even for experts.

I'm wondering if couch coop still unlocks the relevant trophies, though I'm sure I'll end up soloing it either way.

It's a noticeable step down from Twilight of the Spirits. Which is weird, since it's made by the same people. They completely changed the battle system, followed up on basically none of the plot points, and the graphics and character animations are actually worse. Plus, it's the last game in the series, and that makes it an easy target of blame for there not being any more Arc the Lad games.

It came on last night, and reshowed today (on disney channel, the disney xd premiere is on monday)

I also loved Twilight of the Spirits. It's the only Arc the Lad game I played; I think I picked it up from EB/GS for dirt cheap. It's also a shame that so few games have similar battle systems. Valkyria Chronicles kind of does, though it definitely has more of that SRPG feel than RPG feel. What about Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria? I only played a single battle in years ago, since it was so different from Lenneth that I had to put it down out of shock.

Hmm... it's already on my maintained 'want list' but I've long forgotten about it. Will check out. I haven't played any VP or Shadow Heart games yet. But I generally wait for solid deals or good lowball auctions to pick up ps2 games.

I wish there were more hours in a day. And more money in my wallet.

Decided last minute to bite on the Target deal ($10 back on $40) and am going to grab Wolfenstein. I don't actually need a ps4 game right now but I've got 100+ in target credit so will treat myself now rather than wait for a gamefly sale. And... as recently discussed the old school Wolfenstein games (Beyond, etc) are close to my heart.

I'm definitely getting the hang of Rogue Legacy now as I beat the first boss and have two crazy items left to purchase in the manor that are about 5400 gold each. Now that I unlocked the upgraded Lich King/Queen, that is a really cool class that can turn the upgraded HP into an increased/refilled mana bar for some crazy spell casting. I've gotten some really good runs in at 2500 to 3500, so I'm trying to increase my ability to get more gold for those last upgrades that are left.

I'm also perfectly fine not being the target audience. I know the prices they'd need to convince me are so low as to be unreasonable. But that's because I've already invested $1k+ in their hardware suite and therefore am perfectly set to play games locally for cheaper.

EDIT -- put it this way -- i not totally on board to pay $8 to have Uncharted for a week, because I have a ps3. I might do it since I sold Uncharted... but probably not? But if I could pay $8 to, say, play through each Halo, or Crackdown? I'm much more likely. I don't have, nor will I ever buy, the hardware. But if I could stream it for minimal investment? Sure, why not?
I don't think the Amazon/Vudu/iTunes comparisons hold up. I use those. If we're strictly comparing the $5 tier:

-The movies are often new-releases. Sometimes still in theater.
-The movies are often limited-release/independent/obscure.
-Unlike PS NOW, the rental period is not in real-time. So if I start the movie, I don't have to finish it in 4 hours. Usually lasts for 24-48.
-I can watch movies with other people, effectively splitting the cost.

You say you're surprised there's a market for video-on-demand, but the value is pretty clear. Still not seeing it with PS Now, and, dude...it has nothing to do with being cheap. I've barely seen anyone on any site say, "hey - you know - I'd pay that!" Not just CAG. And besides, I don't consider myself that cheap, man. You make it seem like we're all misers unwilling to part with five freaking dollars. Come on.

If you recall I was super excited for this when it was announced. It's something I hoped (and still hope) would appeal to a large swath of people. It's a novel idea and actually WORKS. But the pricing and game selection feels half-baked. Even Sony must recognize this, as I just got an e-mail stating some prices will be reduced.

Nebraska is the $0.99 rental for this week. I haven't heard much about it, but it at least has good pedigree with the same director as Sideways and The Descendants.
Nebraska is great. Really funny. Psuedo-tearjerker toward the end (and not in a "sad" way). Wasn't a fan of The Descendants at all. Boring and overrated. But Sideways is awesome so if you're a fan of that I recommend Nebraska.

This is a new service, so those first two items aren't really fair comparison. Most movie rental services have all of the big movies that have been released within the past ten years, so they don't have any sort of focus on obscure stuff. The library will get bigger and will be available on more platforms as time goes on, so there isn't much to complain about in that aspect besides just being impatient for there to be more games or a subscription service.

The rental period works exactly like most movie rental services where you have 30 days to start the game before your time limit starts, so you could rent a game for four hours and not start that four hours until you have the free time to use it within the next month.

You can play these games with local or online MP depending on what the game itself supports, so if you want to divvy up costs like that, you could do it that way.

I'm not seeing the part where this is so different than movie rental services outside of there being multiple time options that is fitting for a game rental service.

I would put good money down and did with a friend psnow will fail bad. The 1.99 lowered price on some games 4 hour rental is still weak for most. Sony had a great idea but half a..ed it like they do most things.

The sad thing is psnow held resources for other things and it will be mostly wasted. I can get most last gen games for under 10 shipped new or used why pay more for just ok stream version. Hell most retailers are selling alot of new games 10 or less shipped. I doubt sony will get them to allow much more cheaper prices and sony should of known the prices they wanted will make it fail.

Wasted money and resources imho...

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the PS Now Beta pricing is as high as it is because they're trying to figure out what they CAN ask. If they ask for too little and they raise it, everyone will bitch. If they start high and lower it, people will see it as being a better deal. It's a smart way to do the marketing.

From personal experience coding for an online RPG, I can say that making something suck and improving it always goes over better with the players than making it too good and then worsening it. And when you're working with some concept that's new enough, you're almost definitely going to go into one direction or the other, since there's not a useful baseline in place.

I'm not saying anyone is misers. I'm saying this site is for people looking for deals, and this thread, specifically, is for people who own Sony systems. Therefore, we, specifically, are the least likely target demographic for a service like this and will likely always be unhappy with PSNow pricing because we are the definition of people who can find better deals and already own the required systems. We're the ones willing to go to gamestop, waiting for better sales, etc. Not everyone is like that.

And many people are focusing on the 4 hour rentals, many of which are dropping to $2 and others aren't controlled by sony anyway. The week and longer prices are (which a couple exceptions) quite reasonable imo. You can already rent most of the games for a week for cheaper than most other alternatives (redbox, etc).

Steaming movies, new release or otherwise, is a simple affair. Fixed data transmission for approx. 2 hours. If you rent FFTactics for a month, you've potentially got someone putting 100 hours of streaming on a server. Nobody is putting that kind of strain on Amazon or Itunes after renting [movie] for $5. Not to mention, due to the complexity of streaming games vs. films, you basically require a server per person unlike Netflix. Regardless of what you think about the pricing, when talking about pricing, the differences in technology need to be taken into account in order to have a rational discussion.

It's like the people who think we should be able to stream anything we 'own' for free, not considering that means potentially millions of people constantly streaming games for zero income. It's blatantly unfeasible, and so expecting/demanding it of Sony is irrational. (I realize you're not the one calling for that).

I probably won't be using the service because I'd rather save my $5 or $10 to buy something on sale. But I don't think (most) of their prices are out of line given the medium.

And finally, it's still in beta. Selection and pricing all subject to change. I hope they lower the prices, but I think people need to be more realistic about how low it'll go. I see people thinking a subscription should be $30 a year, or free with ps+, and it's all just so pie-in-the-sky ridiculous given the infrastructure required to host the service.

They'll have a better handle on what to charge over time as they determine the average amount of time a user spends per game, etc. It's a beta for a reason, and you need to start with 'high' pricing because if they discovered they needed to raise prices people would lose their fucking shit. It makes sense, then, to start high, and lower as you go.

In X years (5? 10? 20?) streaming games will be far more commonplace. This is Sony getting in on the ground floor. This is Netflix back when it stuttered and skipped and took a minute to buffer with awful artifacts. (Although, in Sony's defense, the handful of games I sampled during free beta played amazingly.) But the point is, it's still in infancy.

If Sony did work something out like Netflix where all older games would be available under an umbrella subscription with newer releases dripped in as time passed I could see the market for it.

But they are going to have to really improve the quality of the service to Netflix standards which could take an entire gen to work out the kinks and for technology to catch up to adequate levels.

So far I've been extremely unimpressed with any type of game streaming service, but like you mentioned it's still very early in its infancy.

Time will tell how this pans out. My guess is PS5 will be the earliest we will see a service worth buying into at a massive scale. Which could be Sony's plan all along (could eventually offer higher tiers of PS plus subs).

Anyone else playing that Last of Us Remastered multiplayer? I hardly touched it when playing the game on PS3 but the upgrade in frame rate and a better controller made a world of difference imo. It's all I've played these last two nights, I'm loving it.

finally beat the eye boss in rogue legacy a mage with fire balls is the best way to do it
just beat it as well. If you though that was a pain in the ass just wait till level 2 boss.

how long have you been playing? It had take me around 8 hours to beat the first boss at level 49

What games are coming out for the vita for PSN+ i though it was FEZ dragon crown cant remember the 3rd but when i looked at gamefaqs showing

ROAD NOT TAKEN? i thought this was a pure ps4 game only.. now hearing the PS4 is free the vita will cost $$$ man .

Road Not Taken is coming to Vita later this year, but the developer hasn't said anything about it being Cross Buy. People are just jumping to conclusions on that front.

o okay thanks. Thought it was coming out tuesday as well and was trying to figure what to take off my memory card to add it. Hopefully its less then 10 when it hits

I don't doubt it can improve. I gave an honest impression of what it's like at the moment. Is that not the purpose of a beta? I'm supposed to consider what it might be like in 2018? Really?

Again, the technology works fantastically. So props to them for that. I'm talking about the pricing and selection. I understand what you guys are saying about server costs and licensing fees, but that isn't the consumer's concern. Are we supposed to feel bad? If this can't be launched with a reasonable price nobody will care how "expensive" it is for poor Sony. It's the same argument people make about the Vita and its overpriced memory cards.

As for Video-On-Demand, every time I've started a movie it's never had to finish within hours. Always get at least 24. The 4-hour option on PS NOW doesn't work this way. Once you start the clock it doesn't stop.

And the video services might not focus solely on obscure/limited-releases, but its a big draw for me. I can name several in the last year alone that never came to my city but were up on iTunes.

I AM that person who rents digital movies. Subscribes to a bevy of digital services. Hell, I had satellite radio for years. So PS Now is very much something I will get IF it makes sense.

you guys are spending way too much time talking/thinking about playstation now. nobody on this site is the target audience for this. anyone with a ps3 is not the target audience for this. it may be cheaper to buy a used game than stream it, but not if you dont have a playstation 3. they will not bring a monthly subscription because they know regular/hardcore gamers would use more than they pay for. they want casual gamers that they know they cant sell a ps3 to, so they will sell the tvs with this build it, and playstation tvs to reach a different audience.

You guys may be right about this being targeted at a very specific set of people. Idk. Of cousre that assumes PS TV will do well enough in the West and that Bravias will regain some marketshare. Maybe. But currently it's the so-called non-casuals who have been using it for months (on consoles). We are the only only ones who know and care about it so if our feedback is irrelevant why limit it to us? Unless they only needed us to stress test.

Whatever the case I do hope it ends up being something that appeals to people who buy a lot of games as well. I wouldn't mind moving some money over to rentals or a subscription. This has the potential to change purchasing habits the same as Netflix and Spotify have.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your point, why do you have to be able to beat each game in the four hour option? Why wouldn't you rent it for a week if you know that it's not beatable in the shortest time frame? The rentals work exactly the same as movie rentals, where you have a specified amount of time to play the game that begins when you first start it.

I don't think I made arguments about server costs or whatever outside of the fact that just letting people play the games they purchased on PS3 for free on PS Now would just be binge playing their games without any compensation for the new service. They're not going to offer purchase options any time soon, so people that are upset about that will have to get over it and realize what the service actually is going to be.

You're free to have whatever opinion you want and I don't think I've ever said that you can't have one, but the service will evolve with some better pricing and subscription options that will change the appeal greatly for different people from what it is at this moment. My whole point has been that it's not that good right now, but I'm going to hold off on adding to internet's negativity and ignorance of the good aspects of it and wait for their planned expansions of the service over the next few weeks and months before judging it.

I don't doubt it can improve. I gave an honest impression of what it's like at the moment. Is that not the purpose of a beta? I'm supposed to consider what it might be like in 2018? Really?

No, of course we can criticize the beta, though we should understand it's still in beta, and only on rollout to people who already own consoles.

But what I really don't understand is your insistence that the pricing sucks, yet you say you "ARE" that person who rents movies. Like, the two of us should be reversed here, because I've been vocally disappointed for years about the prices Hollywood charges digitally. I want to go 'full digital' on film, but will never pay $5-7 to rent a movie (let alone the 'buy' prices, which are even more absurd), and think that is absolute price gouging. As I've said before, somewhere in the $1-2 range, perhaps $3 for new rentals, would put conceivably put a severe hurt on Redbox. I'd rent on a whim, rather than never (some times it feels like I'm going to redbox every day, though i take long breaks too).

But for games? $5-7 for a week seems perfectly reasonable to me given the technology involved and what I get.

For example, I really want to play a couple ps2 rpgs we've been discussing lately. Some are dirt cheap used. But if I can pay <$10 to rent them for 90 days, I'd at least consider just doing that, because I'm getting sick of the amazon buy/resell dance, even though I can usually spend less than $10 after fees and shipping. To be clear, I'd much prefer to just buy them on psn for <$10, but again, that's because I own the hardware.

When I rent movies they're typically new-release, still in theaters or independent flicks. I've never paid over $5 even for HD streams. Yeah, I could possibly hold off a few months or a year for it to be cheaper at redbox but as with most things you'll pay less the longer you wait. Sometimes I don't want to do that. It's still cheaper than the theater.

I'm not saying the PS Now prices are bad across the board. If some of the games were more recent I suspect we'd be having a different discussion. Ideally I'd like to see a hybrid of newer titles offered a la carte and older titles available to everyone who pays a flat subscription fee.

My response was to both you and @affa so that's why I included the bit about costs to Sony.

As for the 4-hour period, unless I am mistaken the time limit begins once you launch the game. So if you play for an hour then stop for an hour, you will have still consumed 2 hours.

Yeah, what's wrong with that? It's the same for movies.

No. It's not the same for movies. At least none of the ones I've rented. I typically have 24 (sometimes 48) hours to finish. I know this because I live with a narcoleptic who often cannot make it through anything in one sitting, lol.

Look, I'm just going to stop talking about this 4-hour tier. That's where my biggest contention is and it's not fair to judge this on the wackiest option. I can count on one hand the amount of recent games I've sat through and beaten in that amount of time. Journey, Entwined, Brothers? Outside of maybe renting something for a party or get-together that shit obviously isn't for me.

Frisky, on page two it says:

7/29: Rogue Legacy - PS4/PS3/Vita - $16.99 PSN - $13.59 PS+

I don't see the PS+ price when I try to buy this.

You were saying that if you play the game for an hour and then take an hour break, that's two hours of four gone. The same would be true for a movie, so watching for an hour and doing something else for an hour would have two hours gone from the remaining time. The only difference is that one gives your four hours to play it while the other gives you 24 hours to play as much as possible. It's the same thing, just different amounts of hours to play the content. I think at this point, we're just arguing semantics.

I've said from the beginning that the four hour option was ideal for having friends over and wanting to play something new, not necessarily as the default method of playing games. The seven day rental is ideal for anybody wanting to check out a game on there.
