[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Yo how many blocks did that game take up? I've seen it listed as 17668 and 17693 blocks. The one I got was 17665 blocks. Downloaded fine I guess.
I got 17,665 blocks for DKCR as well, but considering 32GB card equates to over 200k blocks, and most games only take up about 2-8k blocks, it's not a problem.

It's still going, but it ends on 12/31/14 and is limited to people that own a DX Wii U (so if you bought a standard one, you're not eligible). With that being said, if you got digital games and own a DDP eligible console, then you can go here, sign in with your Nintendo ID and see how many points you have / if you have any vouchers.
Whoa!! Huge thanks!! I had no idea and now I have $10 in my wallet! Sucks it's not 3DS games too I would've had at least $20 in there.

This is the first I checked on the DDP stuff as well.  I had $15 in my account!  Thanks, CAG!  Shovel Knight here I come :)

Do I understand correctly then that if I spend my CN coins on promotional titles that are available for the Wii U, I'll accumulate more DDP credit?

Until the end of the year, yes.

To be fair and completely honest, DDP fails for a number of reasons (minimal storage space basically forcing you to buy an external device, no "insurance" for promotions, usually more limited than the disc counterpart [Luigi U is an add on for Mario U digitally and its own game physically], CN vouchers are redeemed right off the bat, rarely does anything go on sale, not difficult to save $5+ on the physical version, etc), but it's still nice to see Nintendo offer those who want to go all digital some sort of perk.

Like I said, greedy and stupid.

Light bulb! Conspiracy theory time!

What if Nintendo put the two year limit on DDP because they planned on turning CN into a completely digital program by 2015?
I wouldn't mind too much if CN went all digital as long as the list of games become better than what they were/are now.

I suppose DDP is better than nothing. Oh and I logged in and the Pikmin 3 code I got from the MK8 registration counted; I now have $5 of the $8 I need to download that Super Mario RPG everyone was raving about on the Paper Mario topic!

Id love if CN was digital and that it was combined with DDP. It would be the most amazing thing ever.

Wii U storage is ridiculously limited, but I have four retail games on my console (e.g. Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, 3D World, Wind Waker), and over 40 VC/DD games, with 10 GB still free. If I need anymore space, I have spare external HDD lying around.

Also, while you are right that rarely anything goes on sale, between Mario Kart 8 promotion, and eBay, so far, the only the digital game I bought for full MSRP without any deals was 3D World.

I have a Wii U and all, but to get to $60, I'd rather sink that into a disc since most Nintendo games keep their value throughout time. Plus I always have a thing for box artwork. I'm from the 90s so big, colorful boxes always appeal to me.
I completely understand that, and I grew up in the 90s as well, but personally, after dealing with the mess that was a storage unit a couple of years back, the idea of physical media has lost it's appeal to me. Even with digital media, I occasionally go through and delete old unwanted files.

Wonder why they decided to only put 32GB in; flash memory is pretty cheap these days.

Storage unit? What kind of storage unit?

Thats a pretty big if.
It is, and we've been down that road (750+ coins for a AAA release).

Not sarcasm as they don't give us actual eShop monies to spend. They only let us choose from a select group of items.
Nor is that what you wrote or even relevant to what you replied to (as it was about better games)...

Id love if CN was digital and that it was combined with DDP. It would be the most amazing thing ever.
CN is almost entirely digital (has been for years) and the Wii U games purchased / obtained through it combine with DDP, hence it's already such and thus it felt like a sarcastic reply.

Im confused what you are trying to say here... I am saying I would like CN to pretty much become completely digital and pretty much turned into the DDP as CN is completely inferior to the DDP.

I think Wazzup means that (s)he wishes we could get eShop money codes with CN coins like we can through the DDP.

Yeah, I had like 18K free so it barely fit. I think Nintendo got some sort of kickback from SD card manufacturers for giving out DKCR as a platinum reward ;). Looks like I'll have to upgrade mine if I want to download anything else. And I already upgraded it in the past over the stock 2GB. I have either a 4GB or 8GB in there, not sure...

Just go for a 32GB. I've got LoZ: LBW, MH3U, Pokemon Y, and DKCR, and I have more than enough space in this lifetime. If only I could say the same thing about my Vita :/

I figured that out and was going to reply, but had difficulty phrasing it in a way that didn't call attention to how stupid it was to say you want two programs merged as opposed to simply saying "I want to trade coins for eShop credit."

Seriously, guys, you're still saying you only have 4 or 8 gb cards in your 3ds when they sell 32gb ones for $20?
They could sell 64 GB ones for $10, but if you don't plan on going all digital, why is it worth the investment? Like I got 4 gb in mine I think and thats ample for the ambassador games and save data.

Did you know that SD cards have other uses, not only for the 3DS?

Might as well get the best value tbh.

Of course? However, I don't see how that changes the fact that if you don't plan on going digital with the 3DS, then having a bigger card offers you no value. What would be the point of spending say $20 on 32 GB when you might use a gigabyte? Sure you could use it on other things, such as a camera or your computer, but who wants to spend money they don't need to spend just to have a fancy card they need to swap between a number of devices, even though the included one is free and offers you all the convenience you could want?

At least you have the option to change your mind, also this is CAG no one spends real money

I know I don't. xD

A bit off topic, but does anyone have Child of Light on the Wii U and the PS4/Xbone?  Might be a dumb question, but is there any reason to get it on the 'Bone instead of the Wii U, ie enhanced particle effects/lighting/etc?  I know it's hardly a game that would push a system to its limits so I kind of doubt it, but thought I'd ask.

Ehh, never mind, reading up on it, it seems the PS4 version is the one to get.  Carry on.

-looks at Club Nintendo's last 3 big promotions- Yeah, lots of incentive to go digital... lots. of. incentive.
I have slain the dragon,

Also, Do you think they will offer another good promotion for smash bros?

Or was is mainly for Wii U because they wan't to push sales?

Why is the PS4 version the one to get? From everything I read they're identical.

Seriously, guys, you're still saying you only have 4 or 8 gb cards in your 3ds when they sell 32gb ones for $20?
Yeah, but that means I have to spend $20 (even in "funny" money). And if I don't have to, I'd rather not... I could see maybe getting an 8 or 16. 32 seems like way too much though.

Before getting DKCR, the only full game I had was Animal Crossing Wild World (the only game where I chose in advance to get digital over the cart as I thought I'd want it on hand all the time - but I stopped playing like a year ago ;)). Other than that it is just the Ambassador games and a few other VC and DSiware games (mostly Club Nintendo stuff).

Yeah, and to be honest, I actually don't have all that much use for SD cards, even though I have a couple of digital cameras and a camcorder that use them. I think I did buy some hi-speed 8gb's for my video camera. But I don't use it enough to justify any more. I can always just empty it and as it is it goes back more than a year right now. Same with my cameras unless I go on a big trip, which unfortunately hasn't happened in a while.

Anyway, yeah, I could see getting an 8GB. But to be honest, I haven't even looked into buying a card in like 2 years. Of course I went through a lot of trouble to keep upgrading my stupid proprietary Vita memory (32 GB right now which is plenty). So kudos to Nintendo for not going that route.

I have slain the dragon,

Also, Do you think they will offer another good promotion for smash bros?

Or was is mainly for Wii U because they wan't to push sales?
While it's certainly possible, I don't think Nintendo will. The main reason why Nintendo went "all out" for Mario Kart 8 was due to it being a make or break situation for Nintendo and they COULD NOT allow MK 8 to fail. So Nintendo pretty much did that promotion to inflate sales, which naturally worked (I recall one site reported MK8 had an attachment rate of like 42%) and people were optimistic about the Wii U again. Another thing that helped Nintendo pull the trigger was their usual attempt to force* people to use their Club Nintendo voucher at the cusp of a new year (they do this a lot to push people at platinum to stop holding out and it lowers the overall value of the coins).

Now in the case of Super Smash Bros, it has the holiday season and strong Q3/4 lineup to fall back on, plus the bundle that Nintendo is going to inevitably announce. With that being said, I do expect them to have a promotion for it regardless. I expect it to either be a costume pack like Hyrule Musou got (though I don't think this is very likely) or more likely a raffle where like 1 - 6 people win a complete set of Amiibo figures or something crazy like that.

* Please do not turn that comment into a semantic argument about how you didn't have to if you waited a couple of weeks.

Mario Kart 8 sold lots of software but didn't push much hardware. It didn't even beat out the PS4 and the PS4 had no exclusive game coming out. Considering how crazy Nintendo went with advertising on kids TV, McDonalds toys for kids, a free second game, etc you'd think it would have sold more consoles. Nintendo's failure to be the #1 selling console is a reason to be pessimistic and not optimistic IMO. I don't think we will see a free game deal like that again with Smash or anything else. How many people here bought multiple copies to trade in and profit off the codes? I wonder if the install base is really that high. MK8 will not have a long tail because anyone remotely interested in buying it has done so.

Guys. Seriously? The name of the site is Cheapassgamer. Of course we're going to spend as little amount of money on stuff as physically possible... Especially on something as trivial as memory cards. I really don't know why you would expect anything different.

I'm someone that buys an excessive amount of downloadable titles and only physical full games. I've had an 8GB card in my 3DS since day one and I still have plenty of room. When you already have:

13 NES games
10 GBA games
6 3D Classics
19 GB games
18 DSiWare games
27 eShop games
6 GBC games

As well as all the 3DS-centric apps and three full games from various free game promotions, it becomes hard to see why you should upgrade any further when you still have quite a bit of free space left. Unless you plan on going all digital an 8GB card would be more than enough for the average person.

-looks at Club Nintendo's last 3 big promotions- Yeah, lots of incentive to go digital... lots. of. incentive.
3DS XL and Luigis Mansion for 3DS game
SMT whatever and Fire Emblem for $30 credit
3DS and game for Pokemon
Platinum Rewards this year
Mario Kart for Wii U

And for all these games if you could trade them in or sell the hard copy like I did for DKCR if you want to maximize the reward but owned the game, can't for downloads.

What is difficult is if your system dies or you sell it/have it stolen. The games are tied to the system instead of to the account, though it is sort of a hybrid now with it relying on both a little. Now it is much easier to transfer stuff to a new system - so you can buy a new one/upgrade and transfer then sell/trade the old one with little trouble. That used to be harder with the original Wii.

But you've always been able to redownload stuff if you delete it. In fact, this is one way to manage the 32GB on your system without having to hook up an external drive (though that is easy enough even though it needs to be self-powered which is slightly annoying).
Was just browsing some posts and wanted to point out that the Wii U doesn't need self powered drives. Just use a USB Y Cable to plug your hard drive in to the 2 back ports of the Wii U. Works perfect and the cable costs ~$5.

once you own a vita you gladly buy a 32gb card for the 3DS, just to cry out in relief when you insert it in and have all that glorious free space.  then you stare maliciously at your vita for being such a gold digger and only dining on $100 32gb custom cards

but seriously get a 16 or 32gb card its nice getting in on the 3ds eshop sales and there are plenty of sales on eshop cards at target/BB/gamestop to make it worth it.  Nintendo also has finally seen the light and is slowly moving to a games attached to ID instead of console model, its not quite there yet (have to call in and get them to transfer to a new console ID) but I'd expect in 2-3 years they function just like PSN, steam, and xbox live do as far as digital games go.

it is soooo nice having a screen full of game choices and not having to pop a cart in and out, or worry about the kids/dogs deciding a cart would make a good chew toy.

This is one reason why I sold my Vita. I flat out refused to pay that kind of premium for storage. fuck that.

Especially with games like MK7

Feels good man.

Also if you buy them digitally right away no need to go to the stores to go buy them.

Yes, but you're forgetting that these games sometimes take hours to download. Plus, Nintendo's spotty servers certainly don't help.

So I wouldn't really use that as a selling point for digital games on a Nintendo console just yet.

^ Some of that might be the WiFi on the Wii U, which I found really unreliable. I have mine hooked up to an Ethernet adapter and I downloaded all the MK8 promo games in mere minutes. I don't think any took over 10-15 minutes.

Yeah, we went through all that here a few weeks ago (probably in the Wii U thread). Unfortunately one of the slots in the back is needed for the Ethernet adapter (since the Wifi has never worked for me on both Wii and WIi U even though every other device in my house, including a couple of 3DS systems, uses it). I also have my Pro controller charger plugged in there but if I have to I can move that to the front (as ugly as that is - it would only be in occasionally). I can't move the adapter plug to the front. So I need a self-powered drive. Or maybe a powered USB hub will work?

In any case, yeah, I'll probably upgrade my 3DS SD card, but until I got DKCR it wasn't even something I thought I'd need to do. Now I still have some free space (1000 or so blocks - enough for a Club Nintendo redemption or two) and no plans to buy anything for my 3DS any time soon, so I'm still not in a huge hurry. But I'll keep an eye out for one of those deals.

I was actually mainly speaking about the 3DS, my Wii U isn't half bad for 2-3GB files.

Ah, Ok. Yeah, it did take a while to download DKCR. It didn't fail or anything, but I did have to leave it going while I went out for a while. So I have no idea how long it took but it was over 30 minutes that's for sure.

But it still might be the WiFi (of course no other option for the 3DS). I dunno, I just don't trust what Nintendo does with that. Even my 3DS doesn't seem to "see" as far as my other WiFi devices. Though for DKCR I had it parked right next to my wireless router.

Oh, no doubt. I had all kinds of issues when the WiiU launched, and even for a while afterwards.

It seems to work fairly well now though, for whatever reason.

Although 3DS standard cards are much cheaper it would be smarter to buy a 64GB Vita memory card rather than the 32GB for under $100.00. Why spend the same amount for half the space...

Actually I use an unpowered USB Splitter and a Y Cable. I have the y cable data cable plugged into the far right port as it is standing, then the USB Splitter (4 ports from 1 port) in the other port. I have a Disney Infinity Base, a Wii U Ethernet adapter, and the extra power for the hard drive plugged in. All work fine! I have it all tucked away behind my entertainment center. Works good for $10 of USB adapters.

You can use any USB AC adapter or phone charger to charge a pro controller. Also with 80 hours of battery life you won't need to charge it very often.

Helpful CAG Part: Reminder! Friday is the last day to get your elite reward.

Unsure Consumer Part:
Well, keeping up with tradition, Nintendo proved doing something simple was yet again complex. For those of you interested, I never got DDP from Pokemon Rumble U when I bought it a year ago and didn't bother complaining until I saw the elite rewards (I did not call just to bitch about the rewards using PRU as a poor guise). I did that the day the prizes were announced and Nintendo finally resolved my problem... sort of. They basically said they don't know why I didn't and couldn't help me, so they just offered me the value of PRU's DDP in eShop credit. I turned it down and explained the situation, which resulted in a new offer that ended up resolving the problem and then some. While I am happy with the outcome, I think nearly 30 days, Nintendo being unable to figure out why I didn't, the fact it took a week for them to even look at my case and considering I was told to call multiple times is overkill for such a simple problem.

Advice Part: Anyone want to give me their 2 cents on if I should get Dr. Luigi or NES Remix? I can't say I really care about Dr. Luigi and rather get NES Remix since I can blow my $15 in eShop credit on NES Remix 2, but I sort of want the physical version. Not really sure which way I should go, but if anyone has any advice, that would be appreciated.

That's better than the Wii U's gamepad battery life, I seem to always recharge the freakin' thing after a couple of hours of play.

I put my vote in for NES Remix for you. I never really cared for Dr. Mario/Luigi either.

Did they ever announce a NES Remix 1/2 physical release for NA?

The whole situation with the game is annoying.... all I really want to play is Super Luigi on NES Remix 2, but the fact that you can't "unlock" the game you downloaded without buying NES Remix 1 really pisses me off. I swear it's almost as bad as on-disc DLC. They REALLY need to put some sort of bundle on the eshop for $20, then maybe I'd still bite.

My advice is get the NES Remixes physical and pick up Dr. Luigi. With the way Nintendo is handling digital purchases right now, it's better to go with physical whenever possible IMO.

So it is coming then? Any word on price? I'd expect $20, maybe $30 tops..... so, knowing Nintendo, it'll drop at $40
