Humble Bundle Thread

I learnt German at secondary school (11-16) which was a fun, harsh, but ultimately useless language. The alternative was French which I tried for a year and hated, such a wishywashy language.

Spanish didn't appear as an option for a number of years after I'd left. You'd think it would be far more important thab German. Although in German's defence they do have fantastic words like Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte.

And "Wie komme ich am besten zum bahnhof?". That seems to be the only phrase that stayed with me.

:whee:
Spanish and Chinese are far-and-away the most useful languages to learn just in terms of the sheer numbers of speakers out there, which does make German and French an odd choice of options. However, I've always gotten the sense (at least in American schools) that language classes were more about providing useful-seeming electives as opposed to actually teaching a valuable life skill. It's unfortunate, but that seems to be how it is. The only way I think people learn a language to the point of fluency in school is if they take it as a major or minor in college. I actually probably would have minored in Spanish myself except that I hated the language labs: when I was in school they were the same setup I had in high school--listening to recordings on giant around-the-ear headphones that hundreds of other people with their lice and diseases had used before you (yes, my anal-retentive side had a big say in this). I've always believed on some level that being at least bilingual is the mark of a well-educated person.

I've never cared for German as a language because it does sound very harsh to the ear and the words are ridiculously long. I had a couple of French classes in middle school (I ran out of Spanish classes to take) and it didn't seem to be as directly analogous to English as Spanish did to me (that's probably more a function of my previous education than any objective fact about the language). I also liked the fact that if you could speak Spanish you could basically speak Italian, so it was two languages for the price of one.

And my problem is that, like hal, I had enough Spanish to be able to read it quite well and could even converse with a native speaker if we both spoke slowly and I thought about what I said before I said it (pre-translated, as it were), but it's been so long since I've had any classes and I haven't kept it up so I've forgotten a lot of what I learned back then.

In my high school French served a wonderful purpose. Two guys 28 girls.
That's better than my high school...two guys, one cup!

I don't think I agree with this. I know lots of well educated people who speak only one language. I'm bilingual, but I don't think I'm well-educated in languages. I only know a second language because I moved to the States.

For potential speaking, sure, Spanish and Chinese are likely the most useful for those in the US. In terms of source literatures, however, French, German and even possibly Latin would be better choices. I suspect their popularity in high school is a trickle-down from their usefulness to liberal arts academics.

That stands to reason, but it makes me wonder whether anyone seriously considers why things exist in secondary-school curricula. I mean, how many kids are going to study medieval and classical literature?

How many are going to possibly go on to a graduate degree? Most graduate degrees in liberal arts require foreign languages, and it's generally best to choose one that helps in one's area of study.

Even if not going on to graduate work, being able to do a bit of source material reading in the original language can be very useful for any Literature, History and Philosophy major.

That isn't even how you'd say that in German!

But my goodness, the French language is the slimiest damn thing I've ever let out of my mouth.

Holy shit that's an awful bundle. I'll pay a dollar for Claire and give away Zafehouse Diaries or something though.

this is the crappiest bundle I have ever laid eyes on for HB.  Even tier one is not very attractive considering Zafehouse was bundled multiple times before.  Paying $1 for a short game like Claire seem like a rip off, esp. when you can add a few more cents and get Indiegala bundle

sometimes, I wish that I was back in the 90s.. where ppl buy game for what it is not what card it contain. Long gone are the times where ppl ask you "if the game was good" .. rather "if it has card" :wall:

Yeah, but I didn't put it on my wishlist for the cards...

Really? They're worth around 20 cents each right now, and Zafehouse doesn't have cards.
Yeah they crashed as usual. I sold off one set right away for a profit of a couple of cents though and I'll end up paying about .40 for my personal copy of Claire. Still well below my .50 per bundle game target.

I wanted Claire to actually play, so I'm happy.
