You have a point about it costing less to do the same as this generation, but you also point out that the starting price would still likely be around $350 unless they tried to optimize the shit out of it from the start. That is not how it goes with electronic devices usually. If the $350 is accurate then their new console on par with the One and PS4 would likely cost more at that time than either of those did. So who would be buying it unless they are really drawn to the Nintendo catalog? That is the same base of people who would have bought it anyway.Nintendo has plenty of money in the bank to play with. I get that they want to make a profit. But I'm guessing a PS4 level system in another year or two (even leaving manufacturing time) when the NX launches the parts will be cheaper and they could still make a profit selling at $350. The only thing that makes sense is if they are trying to hit some magic price point of $199 out of the gate so they can make sure it's the every man, woman, and child console or something like we've seen happen with cheap laptops and tablets.
I think chasing more customers by having more software options has been proven that it just doesn't work for Nintendo ever since they got more competition in the space.
I would argue they do understand their customer base. It is mostly all fan boys that will be throwing money at them regardless of what they do. They don't have to listen because they keep showing back up anyway even with they purposefully slap them in the face with things like removing the battery charger or artificially limiting the supply of Amiibos.Another part of a healthy business is understanding your consumer base but Nintendo is really good at ignoring just about everything anyone asks for.
They can chase the fad all they want but unless they truly deliver it's leading them on a path to nowhere.
The path they are on is profitability and sustainability instead of world domination.
Did those kids also own DS devices? Have you seen the sales numbers for those? Even us ancient mfers still remember the Gameboy. While we more fondly remember the SNES days, the handheld market has really been their bread and butter in terms of keeping fans hooked to their IP over the long term.If they are losing kids to Sony and MS who is going to buy their products when they get older? Sure die hard Nintendo fans who have to play their IP will buy the next Nintendo console but they need to create new fans when the are young.
