Humble Bundle Thread

I see a lot of butthurt and entitlement here. Ubisoft quietly decided to go with their own digital platform in UPlay as with EA's Origin years ago. I don't see any press release for it but with their recent and upcoming games going through the UPlay interface, it looks like it is definitely going in that direction. It's nice to have some sort of competition with Steam.
Lo and behold, a wild sadubipanda in it's natural element.

How much does Ubisoft pay you?

Seriously, I have never. EVER. Seen a single person say that Uplay is good. EVER. And quietly? Seriously? They even bundle that crap in their console games. All it does is give people grief. It's almost as bad as GFWL!
It's actually okay. I don't mind it. I don't know that I'd go out of my way for it, but all things being equal if a game is free or really cheap for me on Uplay and not on Steam I'll just opt for Uplay anymore.

I had some issues with it early on, but it's gotten better. I like the reward points from achievements used to be able to unlock DLC and such. That's a nice feature.

I still wouldn't buy a non Ubi game there though unless it was on a cheap sale with a Steam key, which has happened a few times actually. Still, to call them competition for Steam is a bit laughable.

I'd say they and EA could put a fire under Valve's ass to add some needed features to Steam but things like web redeeming keys Origin has had for years and Steam still doesn't so I doubt they even care.

I do like that Ubi still gives the option to buy on Steam or on Uplay (or Uplay key) which EA doesn't at all. I know some people get up in arms about the Steam versions still needing Uplay but I don't mind.

I'm pretty neutral/wouldn't go out of my way for it but I don't despise it either. I do have to say the Uplay OUTRAGE every time Ubisoft releases a new game on Steam gets old. Why don't people go bitch at EA for not putting their games on Steam at all? Oh wait, no one wants to use their forums. :p

Like RC cola is to pepsi or coke?
To each of its own. I already said my opinion when it comes to non-Steam digital distribution platforms and already angered some fanboys.

Plus 7-Up is made by the same company as RC Cola and they still offer it at In-N-Out. Which reminds me, it's my lunchtime.

TBH Steam doesn't have much competiton. GOG, Origin, and Uplay combined are probably 30% or less of the PC market, Steam pretty much controls the market.

A lot of the non-Steam market would be LOL, Blizzard, and Minecraft.
Yeah but none of those are in competition with the steam client itself, while GOG/Origin/Uplay technically are. I think there's a big difference between individual games and an entire platform

Removed from Steam. Maybe these are bonuses?

You know, you're more likely to buy uPlay version, since it's not on steam.

All Uplay has given people is headaches. It would be a decent client if only it didn't suck so much. Ubisoft doesn't want to improve the client, and most of us refuse to use it until they do. Origin was a pain in the ass too until some time ago, now it just... does its job, sits in the corner, and doesn't bother you.

But oh noes I'm a fanboy. Yarp.

Okay but have you actually used it lately? Ain't saying it's the end all be all but I haven't had any problems with it in a really long time. Like Origin, it just pretty much sits there and does its job and you can ignore it once the game launches.

All things being equal I would probably rather not have it if I had a choice but it's not going anywhere as a DRM and a store it's pretty harmless and easy to ignore save for the rare decent sale.

Once upon a time people acted like Steam was the antichrist too and there are some GOG tools in Europe that still do.

I mean if you've got recent personal experience of problems with UPlay then fine I hear you. Otherwise it's kind of just ZOMG UPLAY WILL DESTROY US ALL! THE END IS NEAR!

I used to be uPlay-averse, but I caved in when I bought FC3: Blood Dragon and Valiant Hearts on Steam during the summer sale. Played both games, had zero issues with uPlay. I just turned off in-game notifications, and I couldn't even tell it was running. Never had issues with connections. Hell, it's more lightweight than Steam and loaded more quickly.

The only issue I've run into w/ uPlay is that after uninstalling those two games via Steam, uPlay still thinks they're installed. If I click 'uninstall' within uPlay it just opens 'add/remove programs' within the control panel. The games aren't on the list of installed programs, though. It's likely a registry issue (I found a potential solution but it didn't work for me). Oh well... overall I'd say, "Okay, uPlay!"

Dealing with multiple clients can be a hassle, but my primary concern has always been more infectious hardware-based DRM (SecuROM, Tages, Starforce, etc.). If the only DRM is just a client running I don't mind (e.g. Steamworks). If there's other hard DRM like the aforementioned, I don't want anything to do with it. That's why I never played games like Batman: AA and AC until SecuROM was patched out. I wouldn't have minded GFWL as account-based DRM, but I refuse to allow any of that hardware-based shit to mess with my system.

A good resource is the list of games w/ 3rd party DRM on the PC Gaming wiki.

MysterD, is that you? ;)

Chaos Theory is one of the finest games ever made and absolutely worth your dollar. Conviction and Blacklist are both quite good too. The rest of those? Eh.

I liked Future Shootan but it just sorta felt like a cover shooter turned up into overdrive rather than anything tacticool. R6V felt the same way.

And I will confess I have no problem with Uplay. I will pick Steam any day of the week but uplay has not offended me. Of course, I avoid the AC franchise and first run releases.

I don't have a single game in my Uplay account (must have a Steam game that required it).  I also don't have a single one of those games.

Hmmmmm....

Oh wow... none of this is Steam?  Was going to $1 tier just for Chaos Theory.  lolnothnx

$6 for Ubi SleepyDongs I'll do but not Tom Clancy crap.

Re: U-Play.  I have MMX, DrowsyPenii, and AlternativeLifestyle Whining 3 on U-Play and never really had any issues.

Chaos Theory is by far my favorite SC game. I couldn't resist Tier #1 for a UPLAY copy.

Original retail SC:CT copy has StarForce attached to it.

... wait a minute. I have this in limited edition retail. You mean this is unplayable now? D:
If you're that worried about spending $1 here - update your StarForce drivers; install your retail copy; and see if it'll boot on your PC.

Few places you can look for more info on StarForce:

StarForce Drivers -> http://www.star-force.com/support/drivers/

SF Helper Utility -> http://www.star-force.com/support/sfhelper/

StarForce caused me a hell of a lot of grief a while ago. No way in hell am I touching that thing again.

Patching games on Uplay use to be such a pain in the ass. I remember opening the same game repeatedly (Far cry 3/Blood dragon comes to mind), so that it could install and download a single patch when the game has like 10 in total. I think they finally fixed this for most new games now on Uplay.

Anyways, I actually don't have or played much of any of these games except for Future Soldier on PS3. Went for the $10 tier and made sure to give Ubisoft a penny since these aren't steam keys.

Yeah, StarForce sucks. No arguments there.

I was glad to hand over my $1 to UPLAY for SC: Chaos Theory; to put some other games I owned directly onto UPLAY (like R6: Vegas, Rainbow Six 3); and to get games I was missing (like the original R6 + Ghost Recon).

For the ones I already owned - sure beats getting discs out and/or dealing w/ other disc-DRM.

At least we know all of those will be in $1 tier Humble bundles eventually, and 90% off on Steam since it's Devolver. They're taking their time with discounting Broforce though, maybe because it's still in EA.
lol.. it's been a long time since we have a decent Devolver HB

or download it with the DRM removed and don't feel bad about it because you already own it.....

DRM is hard
There's always the route of getting a EXE-crack, if you want to go through that as a last resort.

No need to here for me - as Uplay version works just fine.

Plus, for that $1 in HB first tier - I picked-up some games like R6 original + Ghost Recon, which for some reason I never actually owned.

Getting UPlay copies of R6 Vegas, R6 Siege Beta, R6 3: Gold Edition - these are just icing on top of the cake here.

Certainly a win for me.

You've changed, MysterD. It saddens me.
You might find this interesting.

Like some games on Steam - after doing downloads and installs from UPLAY....

UPlay versions of R6 (original); SC: Chaos Theory can be booted w/out UPLAY going.

On the other hand - R6 Gold (UPlay Version) will force UPLAY to boot if you try to boot the game while is UPLAY closed.

Peculiar that Splinter Cell 1 is in BTA while Chaos Theory is in $1. You'd think it'd be the other way around.

Future Soldier should be in BTA tbh. But I guess they needed something else in the $10 tier.

The $1 tier is terrific since it gives you the old Rainbow Six games(but no Rogue Spear?) and Ghost Recon 1.

Maybe they'll add Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1&2, Rogue Spear and the HAWX games to the average next week.

If you're playing Rainbow Six 3, Remember to try the Raven 2.0 mod. It modernizes it a bit and keeps it from feeling old.
