Except that your reasoning for your idea of letting everybody use PlayStation Now servers for free because BC is only available through it is "that's [how it's funded] not really our problem as consumers." That's not how any business works, even companies like Microsoft with tons of money they could waste if they wanted. That's why the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch cost what they're charging and not $100 less because it's bad business despite a cheaper price being more ideal for the end consumer. It's hard to have a discussion on more informed solutions if you can easily sweep away issues and criticism with "we don't have to care since we're consumers" or "Sony's in first place, so they don't care." Balking at every fair criticism of your idea shows no interest in discussing it, so there's no need to try to continue it.
We are apparently arguing two different things here. I never argued that PSNow was a good option for backwards compatibility for the consumer and also never argued that it made financial sense for Sony to offer it as an option. The position was taken by others that Sony basically cannot offer a backwards compatibility option and I am simply arguing that despite the architecture problems of the PS3, they do have a very possible solution available to offer it through PSNow if they really wanted to. Sure, it may not make any sense for them to do so, but it is there. I also argued that I suspect that if Sony were not the current runaway market leader and they though BC was something that would help gain market share, they would consider the viability of using PSNow as a way to boost market share for their console.

Also, you mentioned "more informed solutions" but I don't understand what this means? Do you have other ideas for Sony to offer backwards compatibility or are your more informed solutions just that everyone needs to understand that it's too expensive for Sony to do so they should just understand it's not going to happen?

I don't know why you are so staunchly defending Sony here. I like Sony as a company and a console, but when their competitor made better decisions (at least in this case) that work out better for consumers, they don't deserve to just get a free pass on the whole issue simply because Sony's option to "fix" their mistake (although it's not even a real mistake) would be too expensive. It's fine if they don't want to offer it, but they do have an option.

Question for those who got the $15 PSN reward for E3 Experience, first do they stack? Second, it says expires 7/31 does that mean it needs to be redeemed by 7/31 or used up by 7/31.

1. Yes
2. Redeemed by only

Both simply just add funds to your wallet.

Yeah, I've done this promo just about every time since they started running it on PS3. You're right, it comes via notifications or by email and both had happened to me in the past. I was just curious because I didn't see many discussing it, maybe because people just redeem it right away.

I turn on my PS4 daily and usually get $15 back the first day Sony starts sending it out. I agree it seems to come in waves, I guess if I don't see anything a couple days before the 18th then I'll try contacting Sony. Maybe I'm being impatient. Thanks for your reply however.

Yeah, I have the app and have received it this way as well. Weird how I haven't received nothing yet.
Might also check your PS3 messages, that's how mine came several days ago.

Just contact their chat now, as I just did. They'll check your account and can verify that you qualified to get you your code. No need to wait two weeks just in case if it'll affect purchase options. Just make sure you're nice and they'll probably help you out.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that I'm defending Sony when I'm in favor of BC and have said so in here.

We just don't need the worst possible form of it because that's somehow better than nothing, so don't conflate criticism of a bad idea with opposition to BC. They should do the hard work to get it done the proper way, if that's possible. The architecture makes that really hard to do, but the PC PS3 emulator is making slow progress (91% not playable) to show there can be something done since Sony has better resources.

After vacillating, I picked up RIGS. It does seem to have a somewhat robust single player experience (leagues, tournaments, challenges) but not sure how active multiplayer is.

Just started playing it, but so far I like it. It is one of the better looking VR games and runs smooth. Played thru the tutorial and a couple of the league games (haven't played all the game types yet). Still trying out the different control schemes and settings. But so far am happy about the purchase.

If anyone wants to co-op or multiplayer, feel free to hit me up. As far as VR games that have co-op/multiplayer, I also have Eve: Valkyrie, Driveclub VR (both excellent games), Battlezone (just bought), and Eagle Flight (not sure how the co-op or multiplayer works in that yet). I will also check out Starblood Arena when that gets a worthy sale.

Thanks for the response. I'd really love Sony to address it some way - and the more properly the better. I do question the "official" line of the PS3 architecture being so impossible - especially when it may be in Sony's best interest to avoid backwards compatibility (either due to R&D savings or for other reasons).

Random question...I'm one of those people that love physical cases. I bought some of these games digitally, but am looking at printing cover art onto PS4 cases for them. Stupid...I know.

Does anybody know the dimensions for the cover art? I'm at work right now and it's a little slow, so I was looking into printing those soon. Thanks!

Print cover art to go into forever empty game cases?

I may be misunderstanding the question, but there are whole websites devoted to people sharing scans of cover art and also creating their own cover art. Off the top of my head, I think I recall covergalaxy.com but there are plenty. I'm sure they are easy to find. And they will, of course, have the dimensions, too.

As WYNX585AM mentioned covergalaxy.com is just one of many sites you can browse for whatever covers you are looking to print. You can also try thecoverproject.net, freecovers.net, vgboxart.com, etc.

Here's the link for the different cover dimensons via a vgboxart thread: http://vgboxart.com/forums/showthread.php?21025-Cover-Dimensions

I also came across an old thread from neogaf of some good looking custom covers. Fair warning that the mentioned thread is 73 pages long. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=442713

The dropbox link for the covers in above thread, this will make it easier to look for the covers you want (click on large cover for full size): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5odb2q3l04ljpff/AAD1W0qfW7XQ-5u4YK61J7Lda/Custom%20Covers?dl=0

Hopefully this lengthy post will help you find the covers you're looking to print.

trying to purchase a full cart of stuff but keep getting the message "Your purchase may not be complete.  Check  your transaction history in your Account settings."  credit cards look good, nothing seems unusual.  anybody ever had to deal with this?  I don't buy a lot of digital.

It's also been non-Sony game developers who have complained about it. The PS3 architecture makes it so there is no easy fix, they can't just flip a switch and have everything work. They would have to go through each and every game, one at a time, tweaking how they work individually. Something that would take much more money and time than would be worth spending at this point.

Some people have difficulty checking out with a CC / paypal. That's why I've always just found it easier to buy PSN cards and keep a balance on the account.

Yeah I also bought the season pass a while back for around $22-23. Sadly that's now a sunk cost since I bought a used D5 complete during GS's B2G1. I guess I'll play/enjoy the switch version, sell it when I'm done, and then pick up a permanent copy of D5 ps4 down the road when it's under $10
Upshot for me at least is that getting the Switch version heavily discounted with the GS B2G1 while trading in my PS4 copy made it only like $5 difference at least.

Congrats on bringing up a dead topic just to be a dick. Conversation was over.
If someone is going to post ignorant nonsense on a public forum, they deserve to get piled on. If want a conversation to be over, how about you don't talk in the first place... because if you do, people might respond.

I"ve bought and traded for a lot of older ps2 games, etc, often without cases. You can find entire sites dedicated to cover art. Just download and laser print, cut it down... without looking closely, i can't even tell which is original and which I made.

And... some people make these for digital games already. So do some searching, you may find this easier than you think.

While you weren't talking directly to me, I can help with your answers.

There is no 'simple' answer for BC. That's the long and the short of it. The number one reason for this is licensing. The games from the PS1 and PS2 era were made before the digital age. Many of the companies are shuttered, or the IPs long since bought and sold half a dozen times, to companies that no longer care about them.

This is the most likely reason we don't see PS1/PS2 games on PS4 or PSNow. Sony can't just do whatever they want with games. They need the rights first, and dealing with licensing is an absolute nightmare beyond the comprehension of most people.

For PS3 [which was around for the dawn of gaming digital storefronts], it's generally because of Cell architecture.

And like Frisky said, it's not enough to present a "very possible solution" [in your own words] when you also state you know said 'solution' is a "bad idea". Well, then it's not a very possible solution. It's a bad idea, first and foremost.

While I love the 'idea' of BC, I can also state that I played 2 PS2 games on my BC PS3. I actually ended up buying another PS2, because I liked keeping my PS3 for playing PS3 games. For those people who have stacks of PS3 games, we can't forget they can always just buy a PS3. Sure, it would be nice if PS4 could play those discs, but it's not like most people with a huge PS3 collection don't already have the means to play them.

Wow. You must be great at parties.

I certainly hope you have no involvement in any part of any educational system. How dare anybody be mistaken about anything!

My condolences to your family and fri... probably just family.

I finally purchased God of War 3 Remastered and Ratchet & Clank. First I waited for the $15 rebate, then I waited to make sure there isn't a 10% off code. I'm not expecting a 10% code until December, but waiting until Friday is a good habit to keep.

I have the God of War HD collection on PS3, but I've only played maybe one-third of the first one. $4.00 for 60fps on the PS4 seems worth it. I've never been that curious about the Ratchet & Clank series, but the game looked so pretty when I played it briefly in a store kiosk.

It's perfectly fine to be wrong about things. It's normal. It's common. Everybody is wrong.

However, most people, when wrong, don't start by saying "It 100% is" and then go on to spout completely and totally technically incorrect information.

Next time, try tempering your ignorance with something like "I don't know much about this, but what if it's XYZ'.... and you'll notice nobody will jump down your throat.

I don't care about the BC arguments and vitriol (except to say, jeezus you guys--Sony ain't your mama).  I do care about BC, though.  I don't care how they do it; I'd just like them to do something.  They could at least find some way to let us play the PS1 and PS2 shit we bought on the PSN, on our PS4.  My PS3 can play PS1, 2 and 3 stuff I bought on PSN.  That's kewl.  My Vita can play PSP stuff I bought on the PSN and PS1 stuff.  That's kewl too.  Throw me a bone.  So maybe it's tough to get PS3 crap working, but gawd, write a PS1/2 emulator, and if we can't play discs, at least let us play crap we bought.  Use that PS4 Pro Power.  Hell, even my PS3 can play the PS2 stuff I bought on PSN, and that's my non-BC PS3.

I'm sick of my PS3.  I wish my PS4 just played it all.  I still have a huge PS3 backlog.  Do goddamn magic for me.  I'm a consumer who has consumed a lot.  I see the Xbox kids getting it; I don't care why, cause I ain't always reasonable.

But I'm also one of those weirdos who thinks that if I bought a Nintendo Virtual Console game on Wii, then Wii U, then 3DS... that I should damn well not have to buy it again on my Switch.

I admittingly know almost nothing about how the PS3 and/or PS4 works, but would it be possible to create a small piece of hardware that attaches to the PS4's USB-drive to help replicate or emulate the PS3's cell architecture?

The image I have in my head is similar to the Xbox 360's HD-DVD drive attachment. I'd gladly pay ~$100 for the option to play my PS3 games locally on my PS4. I know it's not pretty and not ideal but could someone tell me if this would even be possible?

The short answer is no.

The closest you're going to get to that is to just put a PS3 next to your PS4.

It's hard to explain how different the architecture is in a way that makes it easy to understand. But think of a electric kettle and a toaster. Both heat their contents, but you can't boil water in a toaster, or make toast in a kettle... and trying to solve that problem by somehow jury rigging up a way to use the heat one generates to accomplish the other task is more trouble than it's worth. I mean, sure, you could eventually figure out a way to make the toaster safely boil water... but... just buy a kettle, if you know what I mean.

It's slightly different with system architecture, obviously. But basically, it's how the 'guts' of the ps3 communicate with itself [solving problems, reading code, generating output]. And it's way different than normal system architecture, just like the kettle is different than the toaster. Same, yet alien.

Another goofy analogy. Let's say you manage a factory, and you have 7 workers all running around, doing different tasks. You document everything all 7 people do everyday, in the exact order they do it. [that's the code] Now, the same factory fires you and your 7 workers, and hires 1 really smart and fast guy. He is so smart and fast, that he can power through and run the factory just fine by himself. But your documentation is nearly meaningless to him... no matter how hard he tries, he can never be in 7 places at once, doing different things at the same time. Sure, he can do things -his- way, and do it even better than you can... but he can't do things -your- way.

And that's a lot of PS3 code. It's designed for an architecture that just doesn't translate to normal architecture. And the more optimized the code is for the PS3, the worse any chance at emu'ing it would be.

Nice to put a voice to the tanuki suit.

Honestly I don't get rocket league. I have tried it and my kids enjoy playing it but man I don't understand the draw for that game at all! Different strokes I guess.

Thanks for the vid Frisky. Wanted to see if I was just missing something about the game... nope.

Catching up with the thread after a few days away…
Thanks Frisky for posting the one-year deal on PSNow. All the BC talk aside it's a pretty great deal if you just look at it for what it is as opposed to what it isn't. I mean 500+ games and growing for 10 bucks a month is pretty awesome. I'm also one of those guys that love the convenience of not having to swap out discs. If they come through with a few more good PS4 Games it will be even more of a slamdunk. I'm much more of an Xbox guy but this blows away game pass.

Thanks again for a great thread.

Alright, so I mentioned how I was planning to get a PS4 soon in this thread about a week or so ago but as of yesterday evening I am officially a member of the PS4 crowd. :bouncy:

Picked up 2 Pros for $190 + tax each (80% of that being store credit). Could not be more thrilled.

Coincidentally, my public library just got an amazing selection of rentable PS4 games. I don't even know where to start.

A public library with games?!?! Where do I need to be living?

Start with Nier, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Nioh...well, probably not being much help.

Picked up 2 Pros for $190 + tax each (80% of that being store credit). Could not be more thrilled.

Coincidentally, my public library just got an amazing selection of rentable PS4 games. I don't even know where to start.
May as well start with July's free game. Until dawn is criminally overlooked when it comes to ps4's best exclusives. Such a gem. If you're an RPG guy, Persona 5 is pretty stellar. I'm still working my way through it, tons of content.

I'm kinda curious about Persona 5 myself. Never played any previous games, but I enjoy a good turn based game. Especially if it's as lengthy as I hear it is, without getting boring.

Looks like I'll actually get to try this PS4 Pro out in 4K. My local walmart had a crazy deal on some floor model TVs. Got a Vizio 4K 50" for $125. There was a 55' Samsung curved sitting next to it for $175 but it was only 1080p. And someone before me bought a 65" tv for $199 :/

A public library with games?!?! Where do I need to be living?

Long Island. It's had games for years but it was basically Wii stuff until 2 or 3 years ago, then they got 360/PS3 (mostly crap) and apparently they recently started stocking Xbone/PS4/Wii U but the PS4 stuff is easily the best stocked platform. They've got all 4 games you've mentioned (good list) plus Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Ratchet & Clank, and others as well as some good recent third-party stuff like Tekken 7 and Injustice 2. Surprisingly they didn't have Bloodborne.

I went over to the desk to make a request for them to add the Crash Trilogy, and mentioned whoever picked out the PS4 stuff had great taste. Turns out I was complimenting the guy I was talking to, and we ended up talking about the Yakuza series and our Vitas. Real cool guy, glad he works at my library.

I mentioned it a week or so ago but I was deliberately looking to buy Until Dawn during this sale in prep for getting a PS4. When I saw the VR spin-off received a steep discount and Until Dawn didn't, I knew it was coming to +. Definitely one of the top 3 exclusives I was looking forward to playing (Crash and Spiderman being the other 2). I've heard good things about Persona 5 and it's in stock at my library, but I don't want to commit to a real lengthy game like that right away.

Damn. Would those prices show up on Brickseek or do I have to stop by in-person?

Definitely in person. They were just the TVs by themselves. They were sitting on a palette sold as-is. The prices had to be overridden at the register. It didn't even come with a remote. I had a Vizio remote I could program it with.

Went in person, no luck. Used Brickseek to find possible clearance TVs but they were pretty much all gone already. :whistle2:(

Oh well, no 4K for me.

I'm in the final dungeon....current clock is 83 hours. And I've stayed busy with very little down time, and even FF'ing through some of the duller character scenes. So it might be the first RPG that advertises 100 hours of playtime that actually comes close to it.

Its got an awesome battle system, terrific dungeons, and a great sense of style. The social game is also well done. My only complaint is some story bits drag on too long, mainly between dungeons. But any JRPG fan owes it to themselves to play it.

Edited to add: just wanted to clarify since you said you were worried about games being boring: the gameplay is not boring whatsoever. Battles are intense, and the game offers a good challenge. Just the after-effects and scenes following dungeons leading into the next story bit can drag

Glad to hear it, I'll have to keep an eye on its price and pick it up whenever I can. Thanks!

I'd stay away from clearance or as is tvs, often floor models that have been run nonstop and their life is greatly shortened.
The clearance ones on Brickseek are clearanced due to wanting to clear old inventory, not necessarily because they're floor models.

But yes, I agree, provided there isn't a MASSIVE price gap.

So apparently there's spammers on PSN. Got added to two groups by spammers as soon as I connected my PSN ID to the Pro.

Two questions for the more experienced PS4 users among you.

1) How come when I'm on my profile there's no blue dot thing and it won't let me change my online status?

2) In regards to FFXIV, if I buy the game on my account, can my brother also enjoy the game/free trial on his account if he's using my PS4? Or is the trial locked to only the original purchaser?

Thanks.

Trial is per account. So if you download trial. He can use another account to download trial. On the same ps4.

Thank you.

Okay, so he can play FFXIV from his PSN ID without paying the $10 himself?

I assume FFXIV subs are per Squeenix account and not shared across PSN IDs. Is this correct?
