Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I dislike Kirito because there's nothing unique about him except he's (apparently) rly good at video games and because of that everybody is in love with him, including his sister.
I hate the fact that Kirito is basically a god at everything he touches. Ingame he can solo raid contents that dozens of the best other players can barely handle, beat the best players consistently (Aside from Yuuki who decimated his bitch ass), and in the real world he's some godly coder/computer science wiz who can create magical devices to allow his creepy virtual daughter to interact with the real world and other bullshit.

He's not an interesting character, he has no interesting past, and no interesting trait. Yet somehow everyone falls in love with him, and his bitch ass wife lets him walk around with a harem of girls constantly "tripping" boob or ass first on his face.

He even managed to ruin one of the most interesting characters, Sinon.

Kirito is better than the guy from the Smartphone from Another World
Couldn't say because I would never watch a series with that kind of name, but I doubt it.

He's a shit tier character for sure. Like he gets killed in the game but then tries really hard and comes back to life...that's not how games work. He always wins and it makes absolutely no sense.

Can't say anything about Sinon. I didn't watch season 2 because...why would I? Kirito is in it.

Just like Season 1, it starts off good then goes to shit, then somehow ends with what is by far one of the best arcs of the first 2 seasons (Mostly because it focuses on Asuna and a new group of players, and its really emotional)

I still get kinda butthurt with how he beat SAO, he was dead, then not because he really didnt want to die, then he wins. What? Not to mention Yui basically hacking ingame for him too and giving him and his friends an unfair advantage. (Like somehow carrying over ALL his shit into Alfheim)

I'm playing it and loving it. It looks the best, plays the best, sounds the best, and has the best story of all the current gen of Ys console games IMO.
I have many of the other Ys games on Steam but none that I've tried have grabbed me like Ys VIII. After almost 40 hours on Hard, the only bad things I can say about the game are the graphics, such as the water, aren't so good in certain spots and a few of the boss fights were a little irritating. It's definitely on my short list for GOTY.

I need to figure out what I'm going to play next. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is really tempting, but I'd like to play that with someone yet the usual people I would play with aren't buying it anytime soon. I enjoyed the demo for Monster Hunter Stories so that's tempting, although I'm not quite feeling like going through that now. I don't want to touch Blue Reflection on launch after getting burned a little bit on Nights of Azure by buying it early.

Yeah, Grimrock doesn't have that high of a difficulty due to how you are able to move in combat. It's more of a puzzle and secrets game than for combat alone like Etrian Odyssey. Though I liked Grimrock 2 a whole lot more than the original. You might try Lords of Xulima if you're wanting something with a little bit of challenge combat wise. It's not a First-Person Dungeon RPG though.
I've got Original Sin 2 but I haven't played much of it mainly due to how strong of a grip Ys VIII has on me. I'm also actually not sure if complicated games like OS 2 are my thing anymore. I used to love Baldur's Gate and the like back in the day but now I would rather just sit back with a controller and play something less involved. I did really enjoy Lords of Xulima though.

Kirito is better than the guy from the Smartphone from Another World
Kirito has the cool factor that appeals to the general populous, but otherwise, not really.

Smartphone reminds me more of Hayate from Hayate no Gotoku than anything else.

Aloofness, practical invincibility, bad luck, looks...

Funny thing is, Hayate vs Smartphone, Hayate might win.

LOL this^^

But it was (poorly) explained that since Alfheim used SAO's game engine, that's why his shit was able to get transferred over, yes hacks, but still.

Also I try not to take anything too seriously when watching anime and just enjoying it for what it is. I liked Kirito at first, but after rewatching the series a second time, that started to fade real fast. They really should stop calling it SAO though, since it was only the first half of season 1...

whoknows you should at least watch the first half of season 2, if you enjoy star wars. That's all I'll say on the matter.

The first arc of Season 2 (In Gungale), along with the technical 3rd arc (Mothers Rosario) are both amazing. The middle arc is just typical harem boring bullshit.

Also yeah, I hate how little of the stuff gets explained in the anime to preserve Kirito's badassery/unique-ness. In the video games and their lore they explain the reason Kirito (And a handful of other characters) can Dual Wield ingame is because of a hidden achievement/leaderboard for having the fastest reaction times ingame or something. Also they explain that characters can create their own unique skills/combos (Which only Kirito and Yuuki seemed to do in the anime)

Thanks Supplice for compiling all the TGS news! Haven't had a chance to check it out myself, so it's nice having all the important details right here.

A little surprised that Monster Hunter World is coming January 26th for a worldwide release. The PC version is delayed to a later date which isn't surprising, but I'll probably end up getting it on the PS4 since I have more people there who I'd play it with. Hopefully I can get into it as I had issues getting into previous entries because of the frequent loading due to small areas and most of them being handheld.

Hopefully newly announced games from TGS aren't over a year out since it often means we'd have to wait two years.

I also wonder a bit if FFIX is the mobile port or if it's a real port. If it's the latter, it'd be nice if they overwrote the shitty mobile interface port they put on the PC with a decent one. They wouldn't do that though unfortunately.

Dragon's Crown is friggin' sweet, but I'm able to get together with three other friends to play local multiplayer basically never.   Everyone has kids and families now.  I love how that game is a throwback to arcade D&D.   The one time I got a few people over for multiplayer on PS3 the one annoying thing was everytime each person in the party had to visit the NPCs individually in order to buy and sell loot.  Everyone else gets to take a timeout while one player micromanages. Same with the equip menu.    Those were the things that really could have used an overhaul, like let everyone interact at once.

Please tell me if you ordered mary skelter LE from ifi if your order shipped. Mine is still sitting there and it's driving me crazy!
It hasn't. They have many people on their Facebook saying the same. Apparently, they plan to start shipping today (i.e. release day) which is pretty crappy. I thought they fixed this issue a few releases back, but apparently they haven't learned.

Love dem $20 HD remakes. I will be picking this up for sure.

I saw Resident Evil Revelations 1 on the sales floor at Best Buy today too. Kinda cool that they just need to do 2 & 3 now and then all of the main RE games will be on PS4 in individual volumes. I used to give Capcom grief for milking everything, but what they have been doing is very customer (young gamer, new console owner, collection oriented gamer) friendly.

Still have so many remakes to buy from the last year on PS4. Including the Nonary Games, Danganronpa 1&2, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5, Zero Escape, Crash Bandicoot, and the Wipeout Omega collection. Got to get this stuff soon while its all amicably priced. It will be hard to find soon and then the prices will shoot up. Nonary Games is already gone from BB and hard to find at retail unless you want a generic case from Gamestop. Looks like they just got it back in-stock at Amazon, it was gone for awhile.

I was hoping to make it to Black Friday for some of these games but that'll probably be pushing it.

damm allen snider looks goofy with that cheesey american Gi. They should of left it purple.
hope they add Blair and some original new characters.

I like Overlord.
I liked it as well. My favorite thus far has to be log horizon of the newer in a online game animes.. .hack sign and code lyoko are some of my other favorites.

I wish they had an Overlord game
Yeah its a shame it doesn't have one. But I heard its getting a second season supposedly so I am ok with that.

Meanwhile I am surprised I get to post a deal for once. tales of berseria pc is 23.50 on bundle stars for those interested. https://www.bundlestars.com/en/game/tales-of-berseria

I'm just gonna ask this here because I know there are some knowledgeable collectors frequenting this thread.

Does anyone know a safe way to clean PS1 games? I mean mostly for removing things like fingerprints. I generally use a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol on other disc-based games, but have found with PS1 games, even with the lightest touch, it causes tons of very light scratches that are only visible under light.

I don't understand how cotton is leaving imprints on my games with barely any pressure. It's like the CDs are coated in a soft gel or something. How does plastic scratch by barely brushing cotton upon it?

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you any solutions?

Not sure if they way I do it is correct or does any long term damage but...

I use a microfiber made for lens and a little distilled water - just enough to dampen the cloth. I gently clean from the center to the edge. I do that for all my disc based games, and I have had pretty good luck.

Yea, I was definitely gonna look into using a microfiber cloth, but I didn't know how they did with getting wet.

I'll probably try your method, but would like to hear some input from others, as well. It's been driving me nuts. I can't figure out how it's possible for PS1 discs to scratch so easily, and when I look online, it doesn't seem like others are having this same problem.

lol i just gave up. fingerprints were impossible to cleanly remove with any method i tried and i'd rather have fingerprints than scratches in most cases.

i use whatever T-shirt I'm wearing at the moment.

Mine finally shipped last night.
Yep, same for me(slow bastards). LOL

Honestly, I wasn't in a rush either way, as it's going on the lifetime backlog pile anyways. Iffy is normally great on packaging, as their rivals NISA for sure, but they have a lot to learn from then in regards to release dates. I've gotten most of my NISA orders before the actual release date more often than not, with very few arriving on release, and maybe one that arrived after.
