This thread will attempt to provide a place to discuss past/present/future PC gaming deals. While mainly focusing on Steam games, any standout sales may also be presented. I will not be updating every Daily/Weekly/etc. sale. The tools to help individuals become a smarter shopper will be provided below.

Windows 8.1 is currently the most stable version of Windows (updates on 7 and 10 have been riddled with bugs all year).

I use Classic Shell for 8.1 to add a traditional start menu. I never use the MS Store or any apps. Cosmetically 8.1 + Classic Shell feels and operates like 7, with the speed and other various OS improvements that 8.1 offers.

As sasquatc4 explained, if someone changes one or more components in a PC and Windows won't activate, they can call or chat with MS tech support. OEM keys are tied to original hardware, while retail keys can be moved to a different system. It shouldn't be necessary to switch to using a MS account if someone goes that route.

The caveat is that in the case of free Windows 10 upgrades, retail copies of Windows 7 and 8.1 were not upgraded to retail Windows 10 licenses. The free upgrade was tied to a single system and valid for the life of that system. The retail copy of 7 or 8.1 essentially became an OEM 10 license from the free upgrade. IIRC one could still move the license to a different PC if they're going back to 7 or 8.1, but that will not allow for the free 10 upgrade to be used on new hardware.

One cheap alternative for new Windows licenses is r/microsoftsoftwareswap. The risk with cheaper keys is that they are obtained from the MS Developer Network. Each key has a limit of how many times it can be used, or how many systems on which it can simultaneously be active. It's not uncommon that months later someone's Windows key suddenly becomes deactivated or non-genuine, because the seller sold the same key/license to one too many people.

I had nothing but problems last time I had to swap SSDs.  I cloned it and put it in and it would not activate despite the fact I had logged into my account and tied the activation to my account.  The WIndows 10 activation wizard didn't do jack and I finally had to resort to letting some CSR remotely activate it on my computer.  I could tell he was just calling the hotline getting the number codes or whatever, but it worked.  I anticipate the same issues this time as I am upgrading to a bigger SSD.  Maybe I'll just buy a $10 copy to avoid the hassle.  God knows I haven't paid for a copy of windows in like 15 years.

My previous years looking at the Black Friday/Cyber Monday 'cycles' revealed that Cyber Monday isn't much of a thing. That is, the big retailers will push most of their stock on Black Friday and they come back with slightly inferior deals on Cyber Monday to clear any excess inventory.

Still, didn't grab a GPU on BF so maybe some decent deal will appear. I don't feel any urgency since the 580's have been at $200 well before the BF sales.

Got my new monitor.  Used this Reddit page to set all the colors and shit and it looks good.  Only played The Division so far and... well, it's nice but I don't know that it's $350 nice over my old 60Hz non-adaptive sync monitor.  Actually, I take that back: it's not $350 nice over my old monitor.  But I figure I'll play a few other games first before making final judgment.  Definitely not a "OMG where have you been all my life" revelatory moment, though.

Yeah, even Black Friday seems to have lost most of its meaning, at least as far as on-line goes. Most of the BF deals were up the entire week before BF on places like Amazon and Newegg.

And obviously the Steam sales have been horrendous for awhile. Years ago they once did a cool promo for the Thanksgiving sale where large packs of games (i.e., multiple copies) were steeply discounted. In theory it was to promote giving/gifts but people would just sell the stuff off... which is fine but at least Valve was putting effort into their sales/promos.

Now it's just: here's some art for the front page and tepid static discounts for two weeks.

Do you have to manually set the 144 on your monitor properties? I've had the monitor for a few month now and noticed that it would default a lot of apps and games to 60hz until I manually set the monitors properties to 144.

Well, the code they gave me was actually a picture of a retail code sticker and showed up as a retail edtion in steam. Time will tell.

Yes.

If you have a high-end monitor - you have to set the refresh in the monitor controls itself.

Then, you have to set the framerate caps in your Nvidia Panel / NVidia Inspector/ AMD Control Panel software.

Same goes for G-Sync/FreeSync too.

And if need be - you have to change the refresh rate, framerate caps, sync methods, and whatnot also within some games too.

Welp, looks like that’s 17,000ish coins from Tremor wasted. Ordered a bunch of stuff to use my coins and nothing ever came through. Oh well.

I upgraded CPU, RAM, and mobo recently. As previously mentioned, first link an MS account to the PC as described. Upgrade. Boot up and hope for the best. My windows did not activate via the troubleshooter (although I could still log in), but a call to M$ support and they told me to use my original 8.1 key. Once I did this, it activated right away. I think it will be the same for you.

Sucks for those who didn't get their orders.  I ordered as soon as I knew and I got my keys the next day but I had to check my inbox.  They stopped sending emails months ago. 

 
So in the remote event there are good Cyber Monday deals, what time do these typically start? Would it be midnight EST or midnight PST?

 
It has varied a bit depending on stores but usually none if it starts before midnight PST.   Amazon stuff has always started at midnight PST in the past sometimes other stores have had stuff go up at weird hours like 4 or 6 am PST.  Digging through leaked ads from Wal-Mart and a few other places, I have not seen anything remotely interesting though.

I had a lot of problems with this when I built my new computer last year. I ended up having to go to a shady key site for a new OEM Windows 10 key. The problem was that I too had done a Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 8 on my old system, so after a few calls to Microsoft, I figured out that I couldn't run 10 on my new computer. I actually like 10 a lot, so I was pretty annoyed about that, and I ended up getting a key from sketchycodes.org because I didn't have any interest in reverting to 8.1.

Well, sure; it's here....for beta.

But it's basically out for those who take the latest Beta in the Steam Client; or get Proton from GitHub.

It's not made its way yet into the latest version of Steam Client for everybody out there.

Turns out my csr did something right and gave me retail w10 activation last time. I was able to pull an actual product key from it and did a clean install with no activation issues.
 
Staying up late paid off, just now Amazon put up two really good Cyber Monday deals.

Wreckfest is $14.08 on D2D. Have to be logged in to get that price, you get a 5% off discount for having an account. Hasn't been this low since 2014. It got taken over by THQ Nordic so maybe that explains the price, but for some reason no other site has it cheap.

Agents of Mayhem (will probably be bundled eventually) is $4.74. Those are the only 2 decent things I could find on sale

Agents of Mayhem is not decent. Good deal on Wreckfest I might jump on that as its the best price I've seen in forever.

Edit: or not. I get your payment has been rejected due to security something or another when I try paypal or amazon. Never used amazon with them so it shouldn't be an issue at all... removed and added paypal info again and its not working that way either.

I'm surprised that game hasn't been bundled yet. I keep checking in on it and while it is getting updated, the updates take far too long for what little they add. If they plan on adding everything they originally wanted it it will take them 10+ years to finish the game at this rate... took them over a year just to add a few cars, and not sure if career mode is ever going to be added.

They seemed to waste a few years changing the games physics, then changing them back, then changing them again, need to decide what they want the game to be and just stick with it.

EDIT - just saw this was out of Early Access. Perhaps I will re-install it and see whats new...

Did you buy Madden yet? I forgot to check to see if Origin had a sale on it but am wanting to grab it. Might even buy a few MUT card packs to see if that mode is fun...

EDIT - looks like the Hall of Fame version with 7 extra packs and 2 bonus players is only $4 more

Bought the 1070 on the Canadian site for $399 CAD before it went OOS. Finally upgraded from the Radeon 7970. Got 5 years+ out it.

It came with like the Hall of Fame edition of Madden. I went with the year because it's the price of 6 months. Got BFV, FIFA 19, every Origin game I hadn't bought in the last two years and will check out Anthem in 2019 and there'll be some overlap for next year's madden and fifa.

Thinking of grabing Divinity: OS EE as my final steam "Sale" purchase.

Anyone know how the CE purchase works?  Says it comes with two copies of the game.  If I select "Purchase for myself" do they add one to my library and then email me a second giftable key?

(And if that is how it actually works, anyone want that 2nd key for $5?)

Honestly, you'll have to spend money to be competitive in that mode. It's a huge cash cow for EA and likely the real reason Madden came to PC.

Edit: I'll get you a list of those players tomarrow... I'm about to lay down.

By decent I meant games that can't be found cheaper elsewhere, not game quality. D2Ds sales are crap other than those 2 games. I'm surprised I even found those 2 tbh. I've never seen decent deals on their site before
