Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

So, last night, I got a text saying mine is shipping DHL too. Yay for that. I did see they're shutting down (and who knows for how long) at the end of the month. I only have 280 points left, I'll try to get up to 400 and play two more times before May runs out.

And Rig, I just signed up online through the website. I plugged in my phone info too, got a bunch of free points...watched some videos, decided to play...and on my second game, won a large Kirby toy! Yay! lol. I haven't won anything else since, but I haven't spent a dime, so I'm happy.

Is there a website to play Sega Catcher on *without* TOM Premium? I assume so? Can someone link, please?

I love crane games, but don’t really think I’d need TOM Premium. If I could play randomly here and there, that would be fun.
I don't know if they're taking new people now. They're worried about having to refund paid points at the end of May.

Sega Catcher works great with TOM Premium. You get 220 point for free each day, and the points keep stacking over time so you can save up to play a few turns in a row. I've been playing for 5 months, haven't spent a dime, and won 34 prizes so far.

I heard Toreba is supposed to be really good. I've stayed away from there since I want to avoid spending money on crane machines. Once I get going, I play/pay to win ^^; With Sega Catcher I've made sure to only use my free TOM Premium plays, even when I've positioned the prize to a light breeze from winning >_<

I’ve played (and won) on Toreba several times. I usually keep myself safe from pumping a bunch of money in over there.

I've been following my Sega Catcher online shipment, it's currently in Hong Kong (from Tokyo), shipped DHL, and it's "on hold" with status "exception". Uh-oh. Hope this isn't anything serious.

UPDATE-It's back to normal and left Hong Kong. Yay.

My AmiAmi RSAL package that was "returned to sender" 4/16 was finally actually returned to sender 5/30. Yes, there's even a line for returning stuff. AmiAmi is holding onto it until SAL is available again (with no option to reship beforehand via working shipping method). My Nendo Rei Ayanami...

GSC US Shop is no longer offering free shipping on pre-orders. It's now $4.50 per figure. Still a good price for shipping, but considering their prices are full retail vs the discounts you get from most other shops, I will now only use them for exclusives.

My Figma Darkness finally came in from GSC JP after 1.5 months in EMS purgatory. I also have an RSAL package shipped 4/1 that was somehow not returned to sender and just reached US. While shipping from Japan is still limited to third-party companies like DHL, its nice to see some of the regular mail trickling through.

So SAL is still a no go? I was thinking of ordering a figure from Solaris, but if it's going to be awhile before SAL is back I might just try to find it form a US seller.

SAL is still completely shutdown to all of the world, and other mail like EMS is closed to most countries, including US. The only options right now are DHL, FedEx, and I think UPS.

You can follow Japan Post shipping news here: https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/information/index_en.html

Not related to a figure, but what's the best Japan to US forwarding service? I can't believe I'm asking this, but I want to import a mug that I cannot find anywhere but Amazon Jp.

Is it through a 3rd party seller? Usually I find that most things can ship to the US. Just curious.

HLJ Summer Sale starts in less than 24 hours, at 11AM JST on June 9.

From Japan is my current go-to. Good service, and very transparent with how they calculate their fees.

I preordered standard edition Ammy there this morning and shipping was $5.45. It probably varies by figure, or it could be because I used a PO Box shipping address.

The flat $4.50 ea thing was temporary. Looks like they've been trying to figure out the best way to charge for shipping since costs on their end increased.

Now it's 50% off shipping for pre-orders. This is a little worse if you're buying a single figure, but better if you're buying more than one since each additional item's shipping is less than $4.50.

I think I'm going to go with standard Ammy was well. I like the extra glaive and rosary instruments in the DX ver, but probably not worth the extra $20. Reflector is the first instrument I think of anyway.

I actually don't like Okami all that much, but I really like Amaterasu and her design (and Issun). She's a little like KOS-MOS for me in that way  Still not enough for me to spring for the DX, though.

Someone in the MFC comments on one of the Ammies said that they would've liked to have seen a flower trail effect part. Now that would've gotten me to preorder the DX ver.

Flower trail would have been great. A celestial brush attached to a stand arm would have been cool too, maybe even with an acrylic plate of one of her drawings, such as renewal.

The DX is a lot more for not much more. I've bought DX Nendos before, but still debating this one...

Figma Kid Icarus Pit and Dark Pit (January 2021) (limited+exclusive) (re-release):

I was not expecting to see these guys again. Aftermarket prices have been high, so great opportunity if you missed out the first time. That said, you can see how much Figma prices have gone up since their original release in 2013. I paid $30 for Pit from AmiAmi back then, and now his retail is around $80. GSC US looks like the cheapest place to get these.

It looks like the Splatoon 2 Inkling Boy Figma got delayed until September.

I’m a bit worried that I forgot(?) to preorder last year? I can’t find any confirmation email, and I can’t find any email for an account with Goodsmile.

I’m hoping I checked out as a guest, and it will suddenly just “show up” for me when it releases. I have the Inkling Girl DX and really want the pair! :/

The last few days have been interesting in the world of figures.

I, uh... may take advantage of TOM's current points promo and get her, Ys only being one of my favorite series of all time... (ETA: Yep, ordered. With spent points, earned points, and shipping factored in, she came to around $120)

GSC Anime Expo Lite exclusives are up for pre-order: https://www.goodsmileus.com/ax-lite
Gsc-axlite-202007.jpg

Sakura finally gets a Nendo! I ordered her along with shoot style Midoriya (already have his first Nendo, but love this one's outfit, activated quirk face, and quirk effects).

These will be available in two batches. This first batch is already in stock as these were supposed to be sold at Anime Expo (canceled for obvious reasons). The second batch goes on sale in a few days, will also be available on GSC JP, and will not ship until December.

So how much can shipping cost these days? Well, I got lucky that back in December 2018, I pre-ordered Hobby Max 1/7 Chii from HLJ, because while they charged me 4720yen for DHL shipping, AmiAmi is 7.5k, BiJ 15.2k, and HS 16k! Be careful ordering large figures these days.

I contacted AmiAmi about a RSAL shipment that was returned back in April. They were able to refund and reship via DHL. There is still no sign of SAL/EMS coming back any time soon.

Wow! Guess I'm sticking with HLJ when it comes to non-postal shipping.

Their Private Warehouse makes it so easy, too. I've been building up a pile of orders/preorders there and am planning to make my next shipment request in August.

HLJ's private warehouse is so convenient. I still use AmiAmi the most since I like combining pre-orders with pre-owned (although with shipping fees these days, I've not been ordering pre-owned). HLJ is my go-to for larger figures. Amazon JP is good too for large figures if you don't mind not having the ability to cancel pre-orders or delay/combine shipping like HLJ.

My two AmiAmi orders that shipped yesterday via DHL arrived today! How does DHL do this during a pandemic?

Just cancelled one of my two unshipped orders with CDJapan. This one was for two Pop Up Parade figures, and the cheapest shipping available (DHL) would've been over 5,000 yen. Reordered both via BigBadToyStore; the wait'll be longer, but at least the shipping costs won't be ridiculous.

CDJ not only refunded the full amount of the order, but also the points I'd applied to it, which I wasn't expecting. Not complaining, though!

The other CDJ order is for a CD w/first press bonus. DHL shipping for that is ~1,900 yen, but my next best option for that album is only about 700 yen less including shipping (which is more than cancelled out by the points I'd used on that order) and might not have the bonus. Gonna have it shipped once I can get the address changed.

AmiAmi started a promotion on July 28 that reduces DHL shipping cost to several countries, including US, by 5-25%, depending on the size/weight of the package: https://support.amiami.com/hc/en-us/articles/360046829571-DHL-discount-July-2020

TOM has reusable coupon 10AGAIN for $10 off $50 orders shipped from US warehouse. Valid through August 3.

Anything bigger than a Nendo can be brutal to ship these days via DHL. I've had a few prize figure pre-orders come in stock and they hike up the shipping price so much it defeats the purpose of cheap prizes.

From my AmiAmi DHL experience, one Nendo is around 1600yen, two 2200 yen, and three 2700 yen. A Nendo and one prize is easily 2700 yen. I currently have two Nendos and a prize with 3750 yen DHL (and that's after their new discount). For the foreseeable future, I'll continue ordering Nendos from AmiAmi, but bigger stuff like prizes I'll go with US store like BBTS.

The general rule of thumb with DHL/FedEx shipping from Japan is that prices tend to vary according to volume, not weight, which is great for things like artbooks, but not so much for most figures (and they're really bad for bulky + lightweight items like large plushes and plastic model kits). CDJ's shipping quotes for the two PUPs were ridiculous, but not surprising.

In case you didn't see it on CAG front page the past few days, Figma D.Va has been in/out of stock on Amazon for $30.24. You may need to check other sellers to see Amazon's listing since estimated stock is late September, and when it is available to order, it doesn't last long: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GWLPJFD/

HLJ posted a fun comic on how DHL and FedEx pricing is based on size rather than weight: https://www.hlj.com/how-to-save-on-shipping

-Update-

Got my Figma D.Va in a lot sooner than expected (end of August instead of end of September). I rarely get Figmas these days due to their inflated costs (at least $70). Opened D.Va today and she is quality. Well rendered faces and very posable. She's still available for $30 on Amazon.

Hobby Search: Bargain Sale starts from 12:00PM of 6th Oct [GMT+9]. Ends 11th Oct.

With the way shipping from Japan to the US is these days, the deals would have to be really good for me to consider them.

I haven't used Air Small Packet before. According to AmiAmi's shipping service comparison, ASP arrives faster than RSAL and provides the same tracking and 6000yen insurance.

I have an order of two Nendoroids waiting for payment on AmiAmi. Here's the shipping cost breakdown:

Amiami-ship.png

In this case, ASP is 400yen more than RSAL (SAL is still unavailable to all countries btw), and DHL is 260yen more than ASP. Considering that I've been very happy with DHL service, I'll continue to use it unless the price difference with ASP becomes greater.

IIRC, the times when I've used Air Small Packet has tended to be for media and/or similar small items. It is definitely faster than SAL.

I might email CDJapan and have a preorder there (for a Switch game) changed from DHL to unregistered Air, since it'd save me around 1000 yen (or maybe I'll combine it with a future order...).
