Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.

What is this?

Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :

1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2026. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.

The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

You can also repurpose an old PC. If you just want storage. Or you can build your own using any combo of consumer or enterprise parts. It's fun if you want to tinker.

Software also has many options. You can simply store stuff on hard drives on Windows. You can run some Linux servers. You can run TrueNAS. You can run Unraid. Lots of options. I prefer Unraid since it allows you to throw all your different sized disks into an array and it shows up on your network as one big storage pile.

My personal recommendation if you're starting out is to look at something like the Aoostar WTR Pro. 4 bays for hard drives. The Intel N100 is super power efficient but can handle video very well. Look at serverpartsdeals for cheaper storage. I think that would get you started with a good mixture of being cheaper than the name brands but still easier than building a new machine.

Appreciated. I started looking at NAS a while ago after I had a drive die on me, mostly to be able to have a built in redundancy more easily. It was just a bit out of my price range and tech knowledge so I backburnered it. All my important files are well backed up so it's remained low priority.

I want to get/make a NAS but it seems complicated. I need to figure something out because I'm just juggling normal HDD back ups for my media.

I have a lot of anime DVDs from when that was a thing. At least most of it is older shows so a bluray upgrade isn't too drastic of a diffrence. I know some of them are worth a decent amount just due to remaining out of print. Even some recent stuff going out of print seems to shoot values up quickly. I had a hell of a time finding a region 1 bluray of Eureka Seven HI Evolution 1 for under $80.

I pretty rarely buy physical movies/shows anymore, maybe 2 or 3 a year, but I'm aware of how to find stuff free pretty easily.

I got an LG WH16NS40 recently. Apparently you can flash the firmware to rip 4k discs. I haven't installed it yet. That's my goal Saturday night or Sunday to mess around with.

Here's hoping next XBox does since in terms of display support (I think XBox One had VRR support from the jump and most PS5 titles to this day have it as a sometimes supported feature) that they implement it in someway. Though only downside is XBox does refuse to acknowledge HDR on anything, but 4K displays for two generations unless upscaled.

Thank you for the reply. I was looking at getting a new monitor, possibly an ultra wide, and was curious if it was compatible with the Series X. I'll just keep it hooked up to my TV for now. That is very disappointing the Xbox doesn't support 21:9.

Once they tried (and failed) to manufacture a glowing review of Veilgate, the writing was on the wall for Bioware and I called it last year. No surprise, it flopped and now they're allegedly working on a new MA as a team focus while bringing in the OG's to make a good one. Disc rot is real. Years ago when I was ripping my DVD collection, a surprising number of discs had errors or were completely unreadable. Dual layer discs in particular were problematic.



Getting an off the shelf NAS (Synology, QNAP, TerraMaster, Asustor) up and going is pretty simple. You just populate it with drives and the OS will walk you through the rest.



I recently went down the 4K remux rabbit hole after getting my OLED. The open matte 4K HDR version of Tron Legacy is pretty eye popping.

I bought the lifetime license for Infuse Pro in 2020 for $60. It has been completely worth the price for me. I have an older Netgear NAS with 6x 16TB drives for my media. I use it as a simple file server with SMB shares (no docker apps). I run Infuse on a couple Apple TV 4K's and my iPad. I like Infuse because it just streams to my devices - no transcoding like Plex. It supports HDR/Dolby Vision and high res audio (although TrueHD and DTS-HD are decoded to 7.1 PCM). I dabbled with Jellyfin a bit, but it seemed pointless for my use when Infuse was the only decent Jellyfin client available on iPad/Apple TV.

Once these break as news, Xbox will officially be Game Pass and a storefront aka another Steam or EGS. Now, you can either mourn the Xbox brand as it was or embrace what I believe is their master plan now: a total conversion of XboxOS into Windows.

Sinking in? Why fight a losing battle over Xbox as a development platform when you already own the largest platform on earth that is currently surging with growth: PC. I think they have been slowly marrying the Xbox platform with Windows in that we can access games via Game Pass on either, including more titles on Bnet via Game Pass with Avowed being a huge question mark why it's there. This opens the doors to exactly what they've been telling us: what you're typing on right now, is an Xbox.

When MS told us they would be continuing to make Xbox hardware, I think that's true in the sense that it will be handed off to companies already making PC/handheld. Think prefabs for the living room, that run windows and have the ability to upgrade parts for the enthusiast plus different pricing tiers. All the things we expect from a console would carry over but now with the benefit of having other storefronts as well. MS does not care if you buy a PS5, a Switch, or a PC; they care about sales of games (which they were the biggest publisher last month) and Game Pass subs. If you had the option to buy a PS5 or a PC console that plays all your game libraries, be honest: which would you choose?

I believe that's their master plan NOW, but it wasn't at the outset of Game Pass, or even a couple of years ago. So I will mourn the Xbox that was.

I think they’re going to do quite well porting games to PS5. And hopefully bring in enough money to keep making some great first party games (for GamePass in my case).

I keep having these multi-page essays typed up and deleting them. But let me just say that I think you devoted followers fail to realize that the core tenet of Xbox's business is charging console users for paid online multiplayer. That's not going to change. That's their whole business.

If they go the off-console route then they'd have to increase the price for PC XBGP users (not happening) and make everyone pay the same $20+/month premium, or else decrease the cost for everyone on other platforms to that type of $12/month level (not happening either). The home console IS their business. XBGP is a non-essential service to other gamers. The way I see it, Xbox has two main directions available to them:

1) You go the software route, and you become like Sega.
2) Start playing hardball with exclusives. Customers NEED XBGP in order to access CoD features and other new release AAAA games.
3) (the darkhorse; not happening.) Make online multiplayer access free for any and all other console users, game owners digital license holders. on games that require an Xbox client.

The way they are headed, and what they've stated, is that they're going to continue making consoles. Which means they keep charging their premiums until the customer base eventually dissipates. Because it doesn't cost that much to play 1-2 main games at other places. Steam and GOG got to where they are by being incredibly customer-friendly. They cater to casuals, and people whom don't typically even play the games they get from flash sales. If you want to play in those arenas then realize people don't pay a monthly charge.

You could have a Gamepass service (launcher / DRM) app on Nintendo and Sony consoles, but they are not going to allow you to host another webstore on their consoles, end of story. They sell their own service, they profit from their own webshops. "We want to be everywhere" are just words. Well great; take the haircut on service profits then.

It all comes down to one thing: Do you want to sell games or not? They haven't even made up their minds on this; they want it both ways.

easy, only one of those allows me to rent games at launch and buy it on a future proof platform when it becomes cheaper
it's like you're asking me whether I should buy spiderman 2 on ps5 for $70 or have the option to play it day 1 with subscription and then buy it on steam later.

how often do they have discord polls? it takes at least 200 polls to get the 1k point back? even if you have all the frags to upgrade it to the highest tier?

I get the impression the handheld is going to be a side thing to whatever the main console is. Maybe a Series S situation. The FTC leak made it sound like cloud tech is important in some way, and that seem unfeasible for a portable focused device.

In the past Xbox seemed to be "good" at making plans that blew up in their faces. The Japanese push era of the 360, Kinect, Xbone. Now, I consider them a sort of clumsy ballerina, endless pivots for the last decade.

I don't care if this is off topic. I just watched The Wild Robot on Peacock and it's INCREDIBLE!! Absolutely must see. If you don't have Peacock, get a free trial or rent it or whatever you have to do. Had me tearing up it's so good. WOW!

I just got done watching The Wild Robot. It started a little iffy but really paid off by the end. If you liked this movie then you might also enjoy Kubo and the Two Strings. I thought it was quite good. I believe you can watch it on netflix.

They invested tens of billions into AI and that's how cloud will work out pretty good. that's how it’s going to be feasible

Don't get me wrong I love Xbox but at this point I could care less of a new console. Xbox had its peak during Xbox 360 (less red ring lol). I mainly play on PC now. I view Xbox like Sega since all multiplatform now. I do enjoy Gamepass PC tho!

That's the thing: We don't need a new console. Current tech is perfectly fine for 99% of us. We need new and AAA game experiences that were promised us back in 2020 which these companies haven't delivered upon. We need optimized and completed games. After we bought our own proprietary SSDs, and controllers that continue to break.

Microsoft is the one that needs (to sell us) a new console; have a soft reset. Players don't need that. It's a very odd time to have that be a source for excitement.

That's also what I feel like people don't get about Nintendo. They're going to have 2020+ hardware coming out in a just a few months, as a software-focused, polished game shipping, company. They're going to optimize the hell out of their games, give fans their money's worth, and not be GAAS oriented. Nintendo has caught up to everyone, using budget hardware mind you, and has missed almost nothing during the previous five years. You have that to compete with now. Moreso if there's wider-ranged publishing, and from MS IPs.

You're telling me the plan is to copy the NIntendo Switch's business model from all the way back in 2017, it doesn't come out for a few more years, and you're going to charge people service subs? ha, good luck. The Steam Deck has sold ~3-6mil devices btw. That is between 2% and 4% of the total number of Switch system sales.
