Switch 2 should be closer to PS4 performance though?

Yup. Tech that's over a decade old now 😬

this is why I’ve boycotted the switch this entire time. I’m not all about graphics though a console shouldn’t be running new games like the latest Pokémon at 10fps. Or is it their next handheld? Nintendo should have stuck with two devices for two demographics, a new 3DS and a new console.

My partner just won a switch OLED at her job. We hooked it up to a 77 inch LG and wow does it look horrid in 1080p.

Something tells me most people are happy with the decision Nintendo made...

if you are going by sales numbers, I’d disagree. They combined two pieces of hardware into one. Of course it will sell more based on numbers. Now if it was a “new new 3DS” and a “Wii U 2”, the console version would be a huge flop. As a handheld it’s decent, though with a 7 year old cpu and outdated tech, it should be given away free today with the cartridge prices being $60.

I'm not a tech expert by any means but I think the NS2 will punch way over it's weight based on the tech specs on paper, since I'm betting they'll use Nvidia GPU again (given it's BC with NS games; Nvidia might have already been confirm but haven't been following) and have DLSS.

I've been hearing about Nvidia's DLSS tech for years but only recently experienced it.. it's pretty INSANE. I played Metro Exodus (a few years old but still a demanding game) maxed out with all the bells and whistles at 1440p and was averaging 80 fps in the most graphically intense areas (outdoor forest area) with DLSS, without it I was getting like 50 fps. At 4k, I was getting 55 fps with DLSS vs 30 fps without it.

I'd wager NS2 will perform closer to a PS4 & 1/2 levels of performance. AMD's upscaling tech isn't as good from I've read.

I’m a firm believer in the philosophy of Gunpei Yokoi (father of the Game Boy and WonderSwan) on handheld design: Make it cheap using underpowered technology that can run forever between needing to change (or charge, in the modern sense) your batteries.

The Nintendo Switch only does the underpowered thing.

I'm not just talking about sales, but also the fact that them focusing their whole gaming pipeline onto one console is clearly a decision that's working out for all parties. They didn't just give up their handhelds on a whim.

Unifying their home console and handheld into one hybrid device is literally the smartest thing Nintendo's ever done. It (mostly) helped them avoid software droughts this gen and it gave their console a real identity. Nintendo has never seen this level of success before. All of their franchises are getting sales boosts on it because of the massive install base. Zelda's gone from a 5-7 million seller to 25+ million. A Fire Emblem game sold over 4 million copies. A Kirby game has sold 9 million.

This is peak Nintendo right now while the rest of the industry feels stagnant at best.

Nintendo didn’t give up on handhelds, they gave up on dedicated home consoles. They’ve been on the back foot with almost every home console they’ve released—the SNES won its generation, but sold significantly fewer units than the NES; the N64 sold barely over half the units the NES did and less than a third of what the PS1 did; the GameCube sold even fewer units than the N64, while the PS2 went on to become the best-selling console of all time; the Wii broke the trend for a single generation before the Wii U managed to fail to break 14 million units sold, becoming the worst-selling flagship gaming device Nintendo has ever released and putting it in company with the PlayStation Vita. Just as a point of comparison, every single PlayStation home console has outsold the NES, the best-performing Nintendo home console other than the Wii.

Meanwhile Nintendo’s handhelds have always sold well, with the lowest-selling handheld they’ve ever released (the 3DS) outperforming every home console they’ve ever released except for the Wii.

With this kind of performance disparity, it’s really no wonder that Nintendo wanted out of the dedicated home console market. The Switch has been a weird, if successful, compromise to keep a foot in that space.

Yea I'm aware, was typing that in a hurry so I didn't bother to elaborate. I just meant that while it's a hybrid and all, obviously the focus is more on creating a console-like experience you can take with you anywhere. Regardless of how you define it, the smart move was to consolidate it all into one device.

Yes it's not 100% perfect for everyone, the Switch is a bit too big for those that preferred their previous smaller handhelds and the price of certain IPs went up like mainline Pokemon games. And because it's focused on being a hybrid it isn't as powerful as it could've been compared to a more traditional console. But when it comes to developing games in a timely fashion, it was absolutely the right call, and the central gimmick was more appealing to people in the long run as opposed to them foolishly attempting to match Sony and Xbox in terms of power. The pros vastly outweigh the cons is all I'm saying.

Personally I wish Sony and other AAA publishers would stop chasing graphics and focus on making fun games. Graphics don't even have a wow factor anymore because they already look good enough. I wouldn't be able to tell you that God of War 2018 and Ragnarok are different games if I didn't already know it. Astro Bot was Sony's best game in years and it was also likely their cheapest game in years.

I don't understand the point of spending $200+ million to develop an AAA game that barely breaks even. Nintendo can take a fraction of that budget and create several games that sell millions of copies with it. The interactive movie thing was fun for a few years, but I guess I'm just over it now.

I've had so much trouble getting my Switch to work in docked mode that I rarely play it anymore. If I decide I want to play a game on it, I know there's a 90+% chance I'll have to spend 15 minutes fiddling with it to get it to show up on the TV without flickering black, so I don't even bother. If I ever do get it working, the stress of getting it set up (typically after a day of working a high-stress job) ruins the rest of the experience.

Maybe that's a "me" thing, as I rarely see people talking about it, but that's been my experience with the Switch the majority of the time I've tried to play docked over the past ~8 years -- across a combination of two Switches, at least three TVs, countless HDMI cables, two or three docks, etc.

I had an issue like this with my PS4 Pro when I first got it.. turned out to be the HDMI cable that I had been using for years (I think since my 2nd gen PS3) simply didn't support 4K.

sounds like you need to replace with some new higher quality new HDMI cables. Buy some 4K UHD approved ones on Amazon for futureproofing.

Could be, maybe (HDMI cables). I've tried more cables than I can remember. Still strange that I've never run into this issue with PS5/PS4/Xbox One/Xbox 360 despite pulling from the same bag of cables.

People say the Switch dock can get wonky if you plug things in in the wrong order as well, so that may have played a role. Can't tell you how many times I've had to unplug and replug cables in that order, swapping out HDMI cables and and power adapters along the way to try and pinpoint which piece of hardware was the issue. I was convinced at one time that my OG dock was the issue, as my second Switch's dock seemed to work fine initially, but then after several months, the same issues started happening again.

Might be your TV's hdmi port of you're using the same one between Switches? Did you try the other systems on that port too?

I found this on reddit:
Has to be done in this order (start with nothing plugged into the dock)Plug in USB-C power adapter. Plug in HDMI to Dock. Plug in HDMI to TV. Put Switch in the Dock. Turn on TV and select input then turn on Switch.

This happened to me one time and this solution solved it.

Yup, I've tried other ports, and other systems on that port, and other TVs entirely. Also the plug-in order stuff. All these debugging steps of swapping out a piece of hardware or a cable, or unplugging everything and plugging it all in in a new order - some combination of these things has ultimately gotten it to work for me in the past, some of the time. I've spent almost as much time over the years troubleshooting these issues as I have spent actually playing Switch, lol.

Sorry to derail the thread a bit here, didn't mean to turn it into a troubleshooting session. :) I guess my point is that there seems to be something odd about the Switch hardware in general that it's so touchy like that, when I've never had any issues with literally any other console in my life. Sucks to work a high-stress job all day and then sit down to unwind, and then spend 15 minutes with fiddling with the hardware, swapping out cables, unplugging/replugging, etc., .. blah. Switch just left a bad taste in my mouth dealing with that over the years. I love that I can just turn on my PS5 and pop into a game without ever encountering anything like that even once.

Ironically the only company that could kill the DS was Nintendo

And yes I got the switch (actally 2 and a lite), it was just before Covid

Now the market has more capable handhelds out there...SteamDeck and such

Can't see getting a Switch 2

Onimusha 2 remaster was announced:

Age of Mythology Retold is coming to PS5 March 4:

Quilts & Cats of Calico is coming to PS5 February 11:

Just Crow Things is coming to PS5/PS4 March 19:

Yes yes yes yes. I've been wanting that Onimusha 2 remaster ever since I finished the remaster of the first one a couple of years ago. Googled it every once in a while to see if it was going to happen, and the consensus seemed to be that the Onimusha 1 remaster sold too poorly for it to happen. So this is a huge surprise.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage is a fun little game, Picked up the PS5 version from woot for $15. Sold out now, but look it up. Has a demo.

I had a ton of fun with Dungeons of Hinterberg. The combat was good, nothing out of the ordinary, but the dungeon design and gimmicks were varied and enjoyable to unravel.

MGS3 Snake Eater Delta trailer was accidentally leaked on the PSN store with its release date.

Prob meant for the SOP next week. Whoopsie but enjoy.

Looks cool, but more curious about the Ape at the end...

interesting release date, really trying to avoid GTA 6
Has there been any indication of a release date for GTA 6? I feel like it's not gonna be a 2025 game, and they're gonna do something like a 6-6-2026, just for the marketing of "GTA6 on 6-6-26"... even if it's a Saturday.

the last quote i read is that it is still on track for this year, but its not so far done that it couldn't slip into next year.

i paid $120 to get the founders version of civilization 7, with early access and I can't even play it. welcome to the digital future.
I've heard the PC version is a bit buggy and unrealized as well. I did learn my lesson from Civilization 6 on release which was feature light for sure.

Do you think they gave us some kind of compensation?
