CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
wait quake 4 is pennied out? pc or xbox360 ver?
360 version at Gamestop over a month ago...long gone now probably. Check the first page.

Weird - I stopped by my local BB tonight, and every single guide was gone. They used to have them lined along the bottom shelf across from the PS2 games, but the shelf was bare. I suppose they're moving them or something - I looked around the store a little, but didn't see them anywhere else.

My BB did the same thing in January. They moved them closer to the software and other book-type products. Probably just a reformatting of the floor design. Give it a couple of days and I bet they'll reappear. Besides, why would they want them near the games that they're used for?

Same at mine. I think they needed the room for the X360 games and PSP games/movies. They put them on the top shelves near the games now. Also, check in the PC games section.

I think I saw a number of Jak X guides at a local BB, I may go down and double check, as well as more closely look at the cover to the Battlefield 2 guide I saw. But I think the copy I had in my hands had PC only on the cover, so it wasn't the pennied out one. I did see a THAW too I think, have to double check on that as well.

I have a few extra guides I'm willing to trade. I'm looking for the Golden Sun/Lost Age double guide and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones. I have these FT:
Fire Emblem
Jak 3

PM me or reply here if anyone is interested.
OK, that haul last night was NOTHING compared to the one from tonight. I'm such a penny guide fiend. I went for a drive to Middletown, NY tonight, to a Best Buy there near their mall. I was completely shocked to see multiple copies of The Warriors guide, as well as many Ultimate Spiderman, Battlefield 2, Shadow Of The Collossus and a buttload of PC guides.

I grabbed all the ones I remembered from the list I had a friend of mine print up for me, then price checked a bunch of them. The clerks kept deleting and re scanning the guides so as to double and triple check that the price was right.

I must've grabbed some 30-40 guides in 2-3 trips tonight.

Of course, I also stopped in the EB at the Galleria mall up in Middletown and was shocked to see multiple copies of PGR3, Darkwatch and at least one or two other penny guides. But, I got most seriously DENIED there. The clerk price checked a crapload of guides for me, I DID remember that PGR3 and Darkwatch WERE pennied out, but had them checked too.

So, once he determined which guides were pennied, he gives me this line about 'ya gotta buy a guide at full price to get ONE of these'. I kinda snickered under my breath, then pressed the point a bit, he didn't relent, so I gave up n said to hell with it.

Thing is, there's multiples of Darkwatch, PGR and I think Quake 4 was also pennied out at EB, right?

Another weird thing happened when I got home, I stopped at the EB that I stopped at to get the HL 2 books Friday night and spotted 2 copies each of PGR3 and Darkwatch on their guide rack. But, they rang up FULL PRICE!?!?!?!?! WTFH!!!! One EB has them listed as pennied and the one that is WAYYYYYY closer to my house and hasn't given me problems about penny guides has them at FULL price? I just hope once Gamestop takes over and their systems are synched up, there won't be this much of a difference between pricing and penny guide drops.

Although, I have to admit, I'm kind of satiated for a while on penny guides, I have a TON of them. Ebay here I come, I think.
Good luck on Ebay, the market is completely flooded with all the guides you got tonight.

And Darkwatch / PGR 3 are pennied at Best Buy, not EB, to my knowledge. They aren't on EB's pennied out master list on the front page.

if you are gonna put guides up for sale, i recommend Half.com because you prob won't sell them within a 7 day period - and half doesnt charge you anything unless it sells.

Not a penny but I found some guides at Half-Price Books (in their clearance section for $1.00 each . . . but everything was an extra 20% off today).

Half Price books in what city/state?

I was holding a copy of a Makai guide yesterday, a guy saw it and asked me if that was mine. I said no and he offered it to me for free. He even gave me more penny guides. I may preorder something there...

iamthecheapess.....is that your loot from bestbuy? or another store? might i recommend listing the stores where you get pennied out guides from for the reference of other CAGers

Just got back from a BB where their website claimed there were no Metroid Prime Pinball (there were 2 in stock). While there, I learned that they had no GGCs (they never received the new one) and that per corporate policy they are not to sell penny guides at all. While that may not seem to be news to most, I did see a section in their corporate newsletter called "The Retail Insider" (I think) that asked "Did you remember to JUNK OUT your strategy guides?" So, they have their own term, but they still annoyed me by not selling me one single guide today (Sims 2 University).

I was trying to get the GameCrazy by my house to sell me their penny guides for $10, whenever they got any. The Manager told me he couldn't due it because he had to throw them away. I said let me know when and I'll get them out of the dumpster. He said they took them to a different dumpster all the time so people wouldn't be going through their dumpster. I feel like hiring a private eye to follow him now and find the dumpster.
OMG, I'm an evil guide hog I guess. I just tabulated the weeks take of guides. Here's the list from the past couple weeks. Here's my haul since getting hooked on penny guides:
Good job and welcome to way of life.

Not to brag (because others have done better than me) but my list since getting hooked on guides would likely number in 100-200 range.
Neo, I have a question, who is that in the pic you use as your avatar?
floormat was right, it is indeed the Godfather of Soul, James Brown! 1modernboy made it from one of his mugshots and let me use it for my avatar.

Christ, I never looked at it that closely . . . now I see who it is. I always thought it was a woman!

Anyone guess where I got my avatar??

I don't think he was serious. I think it was more of a "what's wrong with this freak" response, especially with the whole dumpster diving thing.
i just got lucky one day and gamestop had 70 penny guides on their counter. i bought them all
Wow, 70 penny guides...how much did that set you back?

Don't any of your wives/mothers out there give you some static about the heaping piles of worthless gaming pronaphernalia cluttering up your basement/room with all these guides?

I remember reading back a long ways ago, perhaps in thread 3 or so, someone mentioned the likeness these $.01 guides have to (albeit heavy) trading cards. I took it one step further:

Call it guide blasphemy, but I've begun collecting guides differently. I take them home and slice the front covers off of each one and ditch the worthless pages of info contained inside, thereby creating an XXL mini poster of the game. (I'll keep some that I might find useful, like GoW and SoTC)

What true gamer really needs a printed guide to get through a game, especially now that the interweb can answer any questions like: "Where do I go now that I found the doll's eyeballs", and "How many Meters do I have to be before I can pick up the Cow Umbrella?"

I've got a modest little collection of guide covers so far...maybe 15-20, but I've only kept about 8 actual guides.

Gasp! I hear your point though, that most guides are actually fairly useless. I get mine 1: for collecting them (like trading cards, as mentioned), and mainly 2: artwork!

Take for example the Jak 3 guide, or even to a lesser extent Soul Calibur 3 guide. They have TONS of official artwork that you won't see anywhere else. Especially for games I like, I like to see the work that went into making the game. My fave guide is an old guide made by Gamefan Books for Nightwarriors: Darkstalkers Revenge. Not cuz it's usefull (really, who needs a guide saying qcf+p = fireball), but because they made an effort to collect every single piece of artwork Capcom had for the game, and even to screencaps of most of the frames of animation.

And don't forget the amazing MGS3 LE guide, which not only has a great, thick, art filled guide in itself, but also comes with a dedicated artbook.

If you're gonna cut off the covers, mebbe look through the guide itself to see if other pages might make good posters or pictures.

i just got phantasy star online episode 1 &2 gamecube/xbox version

someone said the guide was rare but i dont know

this guide wasnt a penny bought it off of ebay

I got you beat, i hit a gold mine at an EB a while ago. It was in a mall so I guess no one checked it. I found guides that were marked down over a year ago so I didn't feel guilty in the least about snagging em all. I found such treasures as Phantom brave, baten kaitos, etc. Final count after two seperate visits in 2 days........

147 guides. Suffice to say I gave out ALOT of guides to friends and ended up keeping a rather large portion for myself.

I don't know what Death Valley EB you went to, but bravo.

Wow! Well not being here for several months shows that I havent come across any deals at all.... So I decided to go out to Bestbuy to see if I could snag a copy of Killer7 (oi why isnt the ps2 version 9.99? ) Well not finding anything I decided to go into Ebgames and saw 2 lone Castlevania DoS guides all by themselves on a rack other side of most stradegy guides (It was with pc guides) and saw the weirdest thing... It had a sticker that stated it was 0.00 I was like .... wtf so I took it up front and the guy rang it up and sayed it was 14.99 but then he went over and asked manager and the manager was like oh crap... So they said its your lucky day and handed me a free DoS guide!! I was like WOOOOO. Never happened before Ebgames has always treated me like crap (even though Ive been there for years) Sadily now that I got this guide the manager went through the rest of them thwarting my plans to get anymore guides with 0.00 stickers on them. Here is the pic of the guide sticker (circled it with red) http://www.boomspeed.com/new1/holycow1.jpg

The reason Im telling everyone this very long story is that the Ebgames people told me the store has had problems with there sticker system so you people may want to check you stores and go through guides and such to see if you can find any like I did. This may be YMMV or it may not and you could get lucky like I did :D

It's definitely a YMMV deal. I hit an EB and found the new Star Wars Galaxies guide with the 0.00 sticker. I was told that those stickers are holders, but when scanned, the guide will come up full price.

I actually found a God of War guide at a local Toys R Us (with the bonus DVD) but the clerk wouldn't sell it to me, even without the cover. I've had no luck at Toys R Us with any guides.

I'm on a roll with Best Buy though, 100% success record. I just scope out the teenage cashiers and get in their lines. They don't care, a sale's a sale.

I don't think there is much wiggle room when an item is marked free with the name of item on the tag. Don't stores have to honor that kind of thing? Its not exactly the same as an item marked $15 ringing up as .01(though i still think in that case they should have to sell it too)

It depends on the state you're in. Massachusetts I believe requires you to sell it for whatever it is shown on the shelf for, and I think they are the state that requires the date the price was printed to be displayed and it has to be updated every 30 days. Many states allow the retailer to chalk it up to error in many cases especially since it's easy to move an item in front of another tag. Most stores will honor the price difference to make the customer happy or at least give a discount even though they aren't required to.
I don't think they do. Building #19 has a sign up saying they will not honor price mistakes. Also, most stores don't mark the date the item was priced.
It depends on the state. In Michigan the item has to be tagged and the law states that you have to sell it for that price. I don't think Indiana has such a law.

For those that don't know, Building #19 is a store chain like Big Lots.

I'm not denying that, I was referring to massachusetts, which tub tub mentioned. I should have specified that.

I know Minnesota can be added to that list, also. I managed to find a Compay Segundo cd and a 2-Disc Peal Harbor History Channel boxed set on dvd for $0.00. Both times the managers (at different Best Buys) stated that they had to honor it.

In California, if there is a discrepency between the stickered price and the price brought up in the register when it is scanned, they have to honor the lower of the two prices, barring any price mistakes. (ie- if something rings up .01, they have to sell it at that price unless they put up a sign that says, "xxx is NOT .01, but instead $234.")

TRU has had Killer7 PS2 at $9.99 for a couple of months now. You should check your nearby TRU store to see if they have any more copies left.

Picked up Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion, Nintendo Pokemon Emerald, and Warcraft 3: Fozen Throne at the Best Buy in Springfield, NJ on Rt 22. Does anyone know if Guild Wars is a penny yet at Best Buy?

Saw this listed on the Gamestop list, but it looks like its also pennied out at EB -- clerk said that it came up with a warning in red that said not to sell it, so it may be marked down slightly differently than most penny guides:
Gran Turismo 4: Driving the game (the GT Experience)

Also tried to have Lego Star Wars checked, but it doesn't seem to be in EB's system anymore -- pennied out or otherwise.
