Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

If you have guides to trade or request please post here as well and of course any video game magazine deals you may find from any store.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you

Good Hunting

I don't know what the official EB coporate policy is on the guides but the emails we get are to mark them down to a penny and then field destroy. Generally that just means toss them into the trash.

Feel like dumpster diving?

Just so people know...old strat guides at Blockbuster GameRush are also trashed but I'm not sure if they are dropped to a penny. If you know someone that works at one maybe they can help you out with the trash and even bag it up for you.

i would if it wasnt in an open area, plus, tehy put them back on shelf. I think they are manually raising the price on the mags since sticker price says 14.99, cuz when i asked him the price he told me 14.99 AFTER he raised it. please report them.

Getting penny guides seems to be YMMV. Technically they are supposed to toss them, but I've never had a problem with someone either selling them to me for a penny, or just giving them to me outright if I pick them up off the shelf. Back when I worked at Gamestop, I checked for penny guides all the time, and would always take some if we had them, but we usually didn't toss them out. I'd often keep them on the shelf, or in the case of a more popular game (such as Mario Sunshine) I'd give them away to a customer that's buying the game. Makes for happier customers IMO

I wish more people were like you ( and me of course). Except I like in NY, The land of Shytee attitudes. Rather than let some one put something to use, They would ratehr contribute to landfills cause i seriously doubt every store will recycle.

EXACTLY. Why throw out a guide someone else might enjoy. If I were making the policy, I'd say stores would rip the back covers off, then do what they will with the guides, give them to customers, keep them themselves, whatever. I wouldn't mind a guide with no back cover if I got it for nothing

today EB had another huge penny mark down on guide books, here are the ones I got and can remember

city of heroes
warhammer 4000k
full spectrum warrior
second sight
samurai warriors
chronicles of riddick
bond everything or nothing
transformers
NCAA football 05
thief deadly shadows
sudeki
splinter cell pandora tomorrow xb
rainbow six 3 ps2
evil genius pc
catwoman
burnout 3

there were at least 10-12 others

A similar Policy Applies at home depot, except if the employees find out about a deal(RARE), they share it amongst themselves. But if management gets to it first you cant foget about it, straight in to the compactor.

It is nothing short of disgusting how these companies act. A piece of wood which will be thrown out is useful to a customer but by company policy we cant give it to them, and instead must be thrown out. Im just sad that there are not more smarter, more caring people out there such as ZFORCE and myself.

No Offense of Flaming on you, but this means absolutely nothing to me if the stores aren't willing to sell them at these prices.

EBGames just lost a customer.

Does anyone know if the Arc The Lad Collection hardbound guide was recently pennied out at EB? The local EB had one collecting dust on the shelf for the longest time but this week, at about the same time as the other guides were pennied out, it was gone.

Dude, get a grip. That's one example of customer service out of millions that happen each day. It's been common knowledge since the beginning of this thread that penny guides are YMMV. Why don't you calm down and maybe read some of the posts? Technically, they are not in the wrong. They, meaning every EB and Gamestop are supposed to field destroy penny guides. It's the same thing that happens at book stores, the cover gets ripped off and the rest thrown away. The covers need to be sent back to the publisher to account for unsold stock.

Your little example is seriously flawed too. "they don't need money"? A penny does them no good. In fact, it makes the line itemization severely suffer. The pennying out is just a way to let their stores no what items need to be cleared from the shelves and destroyed.

You have no right to these guides for a penny. You have no entitlement to these guides for a penny. Thinking you do is just diluting yourself. Just like "Corporate America" has no right to take advantage of you, you have no right to take advantage of them.
EXACTLY. Why throw out a guide someone else might enjoy. If I were making the policy, I'd say stores would rip the back covers off, then do what they will with the guides, give them to customers, keep them themselves, whatever. I wouldn't mind a guide with no back cover if I got it for nothing
I wouldn't care either. I just want a guide handy in case I get really stuck, and to review after I've completed an area to see if I missed anything. Wouldn't matter to me if it had no cover.

As for stores that trash old product, you would think they could donate it to a charity organization. Give old guides and books to a group doing a book drive, or in Home Depot's case, give the stuff to Habitat for Humanity. They could probably even get a tax deduction for doing so. It's a shame they throw out good stuff that could be used by somebody.

That makes a lot of sense. That why it would never happen for most companies. Target does it, with there unsold clearence items, so why can't other do it?

You should have told him that you get your "info" straight from his mom.
It's fun to mess with ***holes like that.

Well, this is a bit of a shocker. For whatever reason, my local Gamestop still had a Grandia PSX strategy guide. It was $7.99 but of course I bought it. I thought it was awfully strange that they still had a guide that was 8 years old and that it actually still rang up $7.99 and not cheaper. But it's very hard to find so I took it :)

I went to EB Thursday for the first time in more than 2 years. I started talking to store manager and it turns out he's a really cool guy. We share the same philosophy on .01 guides. He said he doesn't care whether the guides go out the front door or the back once they're pennied out. I LOVE this guy! Anyway, he let me get about 20 or so guides. He even went in the back and got some guides he had already pulled then helped me pick my jaw up off the floor. Knowing he didn't have to do any of this I bought an Edge card to try to help him out. He was appreciative of that. I strongly recommend going to EB on a weekday (Mon-Thurs) and find a time when there is only 1 employee there. Most people seem to be much more agreeable when they don't have to worry if some stick-in-the-mud is going to go tell on them. Because of this incredible expreience I went back today to trade in some games (even though their trade-in value sucks). He was there again but working with someone. He told me his district manager told him he couldn't give out guides anymore. NOOOO!!!!!! I'm hoping that he was covering his back since someone else was there. I'll check back next week. This guy is one of the good ones. He actually uses logic and has common sense.

Okay, managed to get a hold of the actual EB list of the latest round of drops. Bear in mind that I think the list they can print up only includes what is in that particular store's inventory, so some guides might not show up on it. Anyway...

Enjoy, and let us know if you find any not already found!

most people are cool, but if they aren't they aren't, there is no reason to get all upset, if EB gave away the guides as official policy then nobody would buy the guides in the first place and then there would be no guides to sell at all. It pays to be a regular customer, manager at my EB hooked me up with like 40 guides including a hardback Pokemon and Omuinsha 3 and I agreed to pre-order a PSP, so we both benefited

Just got back from my EB ( Bay Shore, NY) and they had almost all of the guides listed BUT they're being sold for $1.00 each under a "guide clearance" sign! Still a good deal since Gamestop sells used guides for $1.99.

See something like that isn't a bad idea either. That way some customers get the guides for cheap and get to enjoy them, and the store can still make a few bucks

Hmm, cash only? Sounds like some employees are running a little racket there, unless they are manually adjusting the prices in the computer.

I think my local gamestop is manually adjusting the prices in the computer from .01 to 1.00. I don't mind that they are selling them at that price, I just wish they'd post it BEFORE I go to the register.

I found a "virgin" Shopko!!

Picked up some copies of MGSTS, Ninja Gaiden, 007EON, True Crime LA, MP5 guides, . . . PM me if you want to trade.

I would love some of the EB ones . . . Pandora Tomorrow, Ghosthunter, Second Sight or others.

holy shit i'm going to have to hit my local EB tomorrow.....i got five guides today at BB but nothing out of the ordinary

My TRU just priced their penny guides to $2.01

Gotta get on those penny deals stat!

I really doubt that would be the case -- a large portion of the people who buy the guides are likely to be people who aren't at all focused on "getting a good deal": the target customer for the guides is the type of person who walks in on release day, pays full price for a game, gets the 'disc protection plan' and picks up a guide while they're at it.

Generally these aren't the types of customers who are going to put off buying a guide for a game for several months just because it's going to get cheaper.

The same type of thing happened to me yesterday. I saw a few stacks of guides on the floor behind the counter and asked the clerk about them. He said he had to "destroy" them (throw them out), but he let me pick through them and grab the ones I wanted. I ended up with a few dozen guides, and he even gave me a box to carry them in. I also bought a couple games there, so in return, I bought warranties on the games. Worked out well for both of us.

Most of those "gamers" are the type to sit on a game and wait for it to come out and cheat their whole way through with the guide and later say that the game either sucked or was the best game ever...go fig.

I won't pay more than a couple of dollars for a guide, so if they remained full price, I would never buy any at all. They can't lose business they never had in the first place.

Plus, there's the gambling aspect of it. If you wait for a guide to penny out, it's very possible that you'll find nothing but a big empty spot where the guides used to be. There aren't enough guides for everyone, so people who want certain guides really bad probably aren't going to risk waiting for a price drop and will pay full price.

mannn so many drops in so little time

hoping to have the list updated monday night.

hoping...

oh and as your friendly guide narator I would be glad to take any extra's that you all might acquire. :D Donations are always welcome :D :D :D

Thanks for the Updates on what I'm guessing were guides that got pennied out on Friday :) I was to late last night at my store as I didn't see anything & I know they had multiples of afew I really wanted. I asked & was told that they were "recalled to be destroyed" lol which translates into we removed the pennied guides ASAP & threw them out like we are suppose to

My EBgames used to never bother with throwing out the pennied out guides it seemed like untill the 1st major penny drop of the year this past Tuesday. Seems like alot of others have been noticing their EBgames throwing out the penny guides ASAP also. Any EBgames employees here at CAG notice corporate office pressuring all stores to tighten down & not be lazy with the penny guides?
Lots of interest in the Ninja Gaiden guides I have for trade :) I'd say I have 2 copies available plus I have others . . .

see my list for any trade possibilities:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46303
PMed you I have a Ghosthunter guide & others from the Tuesday drops

I wouldn't mind if they would start clearancing guides cheap instead of throwing them out. It wouldn't be as cheap but if all store did what this store did then you wouldn't have to worry about missing penny guides or getting denied & the trade off would be you play a dollar instead of a penny. I would have gladly paid a dollar or 2 for the 3 guide I really wanted from this last batch of penny guides at EBgames. Seems as if it's not worth the trouble to EBgames to try & clearance out the guides though & they would rather just destroy them :(

I visited another EB Games in the Portland, OR area on Friday. They had NO penny guides, but I picked up a $7.99 tagged Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles because a guide for any Final Fantasy game is like a candle in a dark cave. I chatted up my cashier and he said they had to throw them all out. It made sense because the Clackamas, OR EB is the main EB in the Portland Metro Area. He was nice about it and looked things up though!

I found ONE penny guide at Software Inc in the same mall as the EB. XIII. So at that store and the GameStop near my house, I picked up a ton of used $1.99 guides like Halo 2 and GTA: SA. Hopefully I can trade those for a La Pucelle Tactics, which is what I REALLY wanted! None of the EBs have the guide because it's rare and haven't had one for a long long time.

I would gladly pay $2 for guides instead of a penny . . . I've bought a number of used ones at GS for $2 each.

Today I found the Phantom Brave mini book for $2.50 at GS . . . for trade or keep??? I don't know yet . . .

They had it marked down to $4.99 (has three tags on it 19.99, $9.99 underneath) then has a 50% tag on it as well. Its a pretty cool guide . . . now I need a $10 copy of the game  Often I get the guide before the game . . . I need a $10 (or less  ) copy of Silent Hill 4 as well

Yeah I'd gladly pay $2 for guides too. Nobody ever buys them in Portland so I always get the good ones. Now I'm buying ones for games I don't need just so I can trade them on CAG.

schultzed, I picked up a very good Silent Hill 4 guide for $2 (someone musta bought them from Best Buy a couple miles away and sold them to the GameStop) and I'll trade it to you, PM sent!

Wait, did they lower the retail price on it to $4.99 then? Damn, I would probably go pick one up for $4.99 even. I was waiting for it to drop more from $9.99 since my local stores don't seem to be moving any copies of it at that price.

I still got a bunch of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles guide. Could have easily sell it for less than $8 shipped.

Good thing I already got a Phantom Brave guide from another CAG but will look for more.

As for La Pucelle Tactics I simply brought one off on half.com. That cost is more than covered after selling another guide back on half.com

No I Think YOU may need to get a grip.

My point is that these things are goin in to a land fill when anyone can use them, the homeless could even use them as insulation in this cold NY weather. I dont need a cover, take the cover, give me the book. give the book away, just dont put something to waste like that. Donate it!

Thats like you taking a perfectly hundred dollar bill and while someone standing in front of you can use it , instead since you dont need it, you burn in in front of them. I'm sure that solves everyones problem right?

I may not have entitlement to these guides but I am sure that they serve a whole lot better purpose in a land fill right?(say they belong in the land fill so you can see how much of an @$$ u sound.).

Go check and ask if its part of the 50% off deal that's going on.

Likely a YMMV type of thing because it was in a big table full of guides (most were 50% off their regular price) but I spotted it and thought "cool, for $2.50 even if i just trade it . . . it looks cool."

I went to gamestop today and pick out 2 penny guides. The guy was like this is full price, but I get give them for free if i sign up the gamestop card. I was like I'll sign up if you give me the RE4 and Suikoden IV guide, and he is like no. At the end I pre-roder Xenosaga II and he give me one of the guide.

Also I got two extra Phantom Brave guide today. PM me with sales offer.

CC (at least my store) has a grand total of 2 guides that qualify for this thread. F-Zero GX (Nintendo) is .01 and Dragonball Z: Budokai (Prima?) is $1.57 :whistle2:s Weird price, I know. The employee price on DBZ is .63 in case any of you work there. Gotta save that .94!

The local EB had one collecting dust on the shelf for the longest time but this week, at about the same time as the other guides were pennied out, it was gone.
Might take a walk out side to the dumpster, it might be in there, cuz why would EB want to sell anything to a customer? they don't need money, they just throw things away.

I never said they do belong in a landfill, so your little argument fails. Business, however, do have a right - rather they must - follow protocol. To bring it back into perspective, it's like any YMMV deal here - some may get in on it, others won't. Bitch all you want about not getting in on it but what good does that do? No good. And while others may like to hear about your groaning (I doubt it, though), I have the right to call you out on how much of an ass you truly are being.

I'm glad you agree that you aren't entitled to penny guides, because frankly that proves my point and should have shut you up.

Oh, and your little analogy about the hundred dollar bill? Well, let's assume it does apply to Video Game Guides  ... if that were the case, why the hell didn't you buy said guides when they were full price.

I went to EBgames tonight and asked if they had any Burnout 3 guides left and the guy there said that someone definetly threw them away and if they didn't they weren't doing their job! I think I might go check their dumpster out and see if theres some guides sitting in there today or tomorrow.
