2009 MLB Discussion Thread

Well the D-backs are playing miserably, I'm hoping this isn't the Diamondbacks from the '04 season.

That being said, if not the Diamondbacks then I'm rooting for the Giants to take the division and to beat the Dodgers.
Well, the thing with the Yankees bullpen is that they were banking on continued improvement from guys like Veras and Ramirez. Unfortunately, instead of getting better...or least pitching like they did last year...they have gotten worse. They were also placing far too much faith in Bruney, a guy with a history of control issues and injuries.

The thing with bullpens, especially when it comes to middle relief, is that you often just have to catch lightening in a bottle. That's why I say the Yankees sign someone off the scrap heap, like a Derrick Turnbow. He's been simply awful since that one good season in '05, but why not role the dice? There is something in there. Maybe, you can get it out of him. If not, it cannot be any worse than tossing rookies out there and praying for the best. At the end of the day, if the Yankees somehow turn this all around and start playing better, they are still going to have a glaring hole in that bullpen.
Jeremy Affeldt, Lance Cormier, Juan Cruz, Brian Fuentes, Trevor Hoffman, Braden Looper, Brandon Lyon, Saito, and K-Rod. All better than the AAAA guys they've got. The Sox had a questionable bullpen last year, went out and got Saito and Ramon Ramirez, two legit 7th/8th inning guys, for very little. They could afford to roll the dice on Smoltz and Penny since they've got Masterson, Buchholz, and Bard. For a cheaper team they'd all be starting full time and wouldn't be half bad.

The Yankees had the cash to sign every single reliever on the market, bring them all to camp and cut all but the best. They made 3 gigantic free agent signings but cut corners here, and its biting them hard. If Joba's a starter, sign K-Rod instead of Burnett if they won't pay both. If you've got Wang, Sabathia, Burnett, and Pettitte starting, put Joba in the pen. I think if their management had their way he would be.

Jeremy Affeldt is a baller....and so is Pablo Sandoval.....

Hottest team in baseball? Giants....

Bobby Howry is a fuckin' scrub....

Go Los Gigantes.....bring back baseball.

Congrats Bobby Scales. He spent 11 years in the minors, finally gets his call-up to the show, and hit his first career home run last night.

What's the matter with Peavy this season? Not that I'm complaining since the Cubs won but it seems like he's been somewhat mediocre this year.

he was mediocre last year...his home stats vs away stats had a huge discrepancy. Playing in the pitching friendly confines of the san diego park helps him out a lot. Last year home/away splits ip 98/75.2 era:1.75/4.28 baa .205/.258 homers allowed 4/13

Huge win for the Mets last night. I had that one marked down as a loss with the pitching matchup being Hernandez against Lincecum. The Mets lineup was depleted as well with Delgado and Reyes out. Somehow they came back and won. Hopefully with Santana on the mound today they should make it 4 in a row and be going for a 4 game sweep against the Giants Sunday night. It would be a great way to start a road trip.

put it in the books. We also took out Johnson...but Santana had a rough fifth but in the end the Mets won. Man,Wright and Beltran are now heating up. And not mention Sheffield. Man, He is looking great right now. I take it back. I dont want to cut him with Church sorta struggling. We can actually score with RISP and stealing bases without Reyes. this is what the mets couldnt do last year and thats beat teams they should be beating. I had them losing to Teh Franchise also but who knew, they still kept their late game heroics and they never gave up even though Livan was blown in up in the 1st and 2nd inning. I knew May was going to be good us. Lets hope Redding can give us a sweep tomorrow.

D-backs brought up Gerardo Parra from AA to play Center, since Chris Young has been absolutely abysmal this season. Parra has been terrific so far, only 3 games so far, but his first AB he hits a HR and he has already two triples, and 5 RBIs... that's more like it.
Wow. Lackey got tossed after two pitches yesterday. That's pretty classic.
I saw them debating whether he should have been tossed or just warned on Baseball Tonight. If he only threw two pitches couldn't the Angels turn around and start him again in a day or two?

Seeing as how he's just coming back from an injury, they'll probably give him his usual rest.

I was looking at Cardinals tickets for next weekend and I'm just floored at how much they're charging for tickets at the new Busch. I think I'll be going to more Reds games even though I prefer the Cards and I have family in St. Louis. Are you guys going to the same amount of games these days?

Busch stadium, the only reason I would set foot in that awful place is if the Cubs were in town or if they paid me! Sorry that was the Cubs fan in me speaking ;). Hell we have some of the cheapest tickets in the majors and I just went to my first Royals game in this season on Friday night.
Lovely, Rickie Weeks is out of the season leaving the leadoff spot with a major hole. Forget second base.
i feel your pain. we have Tatis playing short and a platoon of Reed and murphy at first until we can find a replacement. im hoping for either Branyan or Nick Johnson to free up.

Break up the Brewers! They've won 12 out of 14 and lead the Central by a couple!

Cubs have been hanging tough while they try and get healthy. Hopefully we can keep it up until Z and Aramis get back.
Ashamed to be a Mets fan after last night. Disgusting.
My buddy said Church was almost crying in the dugout.

Hopefully it was from the beating his teammates gave him.

I wish the damned Mariners would either drop 10 games in a row or win 10 games in a row so I don't get so invested.

Jarrod Washburn was god-awful last night against the Angels, but the M's took took two of three against the Red Sox last weekend.

Yeah and Jerry Manuel turned his back on him when he got to the dugout, he had to feel like total crap. Besides that play the bottom of the inning was even worse.

yeah it was a pretty disgusting game last night....no player should be missing a bag. That hasnt happend since the 62 mets. Also Pagan screwed up Beltran causing him an error but what could you do. We had half of our lineup out there. Ramon Martinez who was an emergency call up hours before the game, committed two of those errors and Reed who never plays first, caused the other one. It's what happens when you have a bench full OF and no depth at the other positions. I've been stressing we needed a backup 1B and i guess my intuition is correct. They need to make a deal for one quick. with delgado out i dont think the mets will make it far at all until they can find a suitable back up. And I want Castro just to back up. As usual he has defensive lapses. I can't wait till Omir Santo takes over full time or at least splits time with Schnieder.

On the bright side of things we now know we can at least get 6+ solid innings out of Tim Redding...who i am sure enough will solidify that 3rd spot since we can't push up Maine's days nor livan's. We also came back in the 9th again so i know there is still fight in this team. Last years mets would have given up the game by the 8th. atleast we are taking games in to extra innings. Plus i stress again, The season will really matter when August and September hit. I am sure enough The Metsies will be in the race for the top spot in the NL East or have by that month. As long as they can close out August and September...than i dont think met fans have to worry about playoffs.

I am going to stay positive even though last night's game was atrocious and the team as a whole should be embarrassed for committing 5 errors in one game. Sometimes i wish we still had John Olerud back at first. When can we get a guy like him again?!

:bomb: I saw the mistakes via highlights, I was rooting for the Mets.

The D-backs / Marlins game was postponed yesterday due to rain, looking at the forecast it doesn't look like the weather is going to get any better. Wednesday is supposed to be a doubleheader. This is the second game in a row that a D-backs game has been postponed, first against Atlanta and now against the Florida. I want to watch baseball damn it.

What a game last night, I was so pissed when O-Dawg hit that grounder, then saw the throw go wide, awesome. We should have won that game, that many errors there is no reason to lose.

trying to stay positive :bomb:

mets drop another one and make it 3 losses and now the mets are 3rd in the league for most errors. What was one of the best infields in the league has turned in to an utter joke. But i guess you really cant win ball games with a OF as your first basemen and a minor league 2nd/SS who isnt even a good back up, and at the moment 2 catchers who manuel cant decide to play. whatever. heres hoping we can take atleast one game from LA...or in matter here is hoping we dont commit 1 error in a game.

I am starting to question Manuels decision making. Murphy was on a 9 game hitting streak and was hitting over .300 when he was getting constant playing time. Now that they are moving him in and out of the line up he is struggling. Why put Reed at first instead of Murphy?
HOORAY, The Cubs finally scored a run in the Cardinals series!!! Another quality start wasted. Way to go guys!
haha I can really feel your pain now. We got a quality start from Livan Hernandez...only for the mets to blow it late again!!!! :bomb:

now if Reyes hits the DL(which is most likely) than we are soooooo fuckED!!!!!!!!!:bomb:

we cant manufacture runs as is..and without the spark at the top of order..oh yeah, screw what i said about may. We just got teased by a 8 game win streak and now we are paying for it and going to Fenway will not help.

atleast we found our back up first basemen in Murphy. He played the field really well last night...but he needs to find a way to start picking up his bat. that guy's average went from .300 to 267 in a heart beat. Also Livan gave us another great start behind redding in LA and the offense just yokes it up as usual.

Hopefully we can catch D-Mat off guard with a good santana start but thats not saying much....if Dmat is on his game..than we wont get enough runs to help Johan and all Boston will need to do is just be patient, wait till manuel pulls out Johan early like usual..and then pummel the pen. its almost how i forsee this thing go down.

UGH!

D-backs finally win another series, against the Marlins but they were hot not that long ago. Won 3 out of 4.

Gerardo Parra has been ridiculous for a guy who 7 games ago, was in AA... please keep it up! Felipe, Parra, Upton, and even Reynolds have been getting things done. Drew and Chris Young, not so much... Young needs to go down to the minors for a while, he is hitting .167 at 132 at-bats. Yikes! He can't even get a bunt down for crying out loud!

And R.I.P. Gabrielle Schoeneweis...

RIP Gabrielle Schoenweiss. That is just tragic. All this after he battled back from cancer. I feel terrible for him. My condolences go out to him and the rest of his family.
The AL East is gonna be really, really, really exciting to watch. The Jays, though, have obviously not looked sharp against the cream of the crop.
Yeah, the Jays have definitely been exposed. Of their first 34 games, only 3 were against the AL East...and those 3 were against Baltimore. They'll be in 3rd place soon enough. This season will no doubt be a Yankees/Red Sox race.

Well, the Yankees get a real test this weekend. They got to beat up on the Twins (decent enough team, but they always play poorly in New York) and Baltimore. If they can take two out of three against Philly, I will feel much better about our chances.

Man i was hoping you guys would beat Philly. :(

Even with the errors, we won a Santana start. i was holding my breath for all 9 innings because i was waiting for a Sox comeback..and Varitek was hitting pretty well. But i guess we got lucky with D-Mat just returning from injury. Tomorrow is going to be a HUGE test against Beckket. I hpoe pelfry has recovered from his horrendus inning where he balked 3 times. The mets needed this game today. Hope they can carry the momentum tomorrow.

With Reed, Sheff, Ramon Martienez, and Pagan in the Mets starting line up I would not be putting much on carrying any momentum. This team is a mess and they are lucky they won last night. They had 3 errors again and just looked horrible in the field. Church gets hurt during the game and Beltran in batting practice. What else can go wrong?

You are way to quickly dismissing the Rays. Kazmir, Garza, and Shields are a nice 1-2-3. Carlos Pena is a beast. Evan Longoria is awesome and may soon be the best 3rd baseman in baseball. Carl Crawford is a fantastic all-around player. This isn't counting the really young players they have that aren't playing well (BJ Upton, David Price). They also have a loaded farm system to find missing pieces for the stretch run.

Dom, please never ever EVER doubt Lugo's suck. If you didn't watch the game you may not have seen it, but the play was absolutely inexcusable. More so than even the mental error Church made the other day.

BoSox/Mets is on MLB Network tonight, for those of us outside of the markets and too cheap to get MLB Season Pass or whatever it is.

And then I get to watch tomorrow on TBS, nice.

I saw the game and Lugo's mistake. That was the main reason the Mets won that game. They played like crap and did not deserve to win.

Yes, at least right now, both teams are brutal defensively.

And Papelbon finally gets burned with the way he has pitched all year. I'm sick to my stomach with him. Beckett pitched a gem and should've atleast faced Shef. Hopefully they can avoid their first series sweep tomorrow.

Thankfully for Rays fans, Kazmir and Percy go to the Dl. Percy may retire(thank jebus) and they just made up an injury for Kaz so he can rework his delivery and get his head on straight. What does this all mean? DAVID MOTHER F@#&*$ PRICE is starting on Monday. Toronto was just an illusion. They had a hot start hitting and got lucky with their pitching. Now they aren't hitting and their pitchers will come back to earth(besides Doc)

We played like crap but..... a win is a win. Ill take it anyway possible. especially with this patchwork team we have up. WE are SOOOO lucky to take two from the Sox. Another RBI from Sheff in the first and a 2 run shot from Santos in the 9th with 2 out...was huge. Sure they make a lot of mistakes but at least they never gave up until the end. Again , last years mets would have given up in the 8th and just packed up and get ready to go home. I am proud we took 2 at Fenway where everyone...even me counted them out. If we sweep tomorrow...this hopefully could carry us for our homestand.
