2009 MLB Discussion Thread
put it in the books. Very good rebound win tonight by the mets. All cylinders were rolling today. Hats off to Livan Hernandez. The only Mets Starter to go beyond the fifth inning and he did it convincingly. But wow, where did Luis Castillo come from. He should have been 5-5 but 4-4 with 3 runs and a RBI is amazing. I hope he keeps his aggressiveness at plate. it worked today, i hope it works tomorrow.

Tomorrow its Johan vs Johnson. This should be a good matchup.
Even though the offense has left a lot of runners on base the first few games, I like how they are looking. Last year they would jump out and score runs in the first few innings then seem to fall asleep the rest of the game. They are adding on runs which is obviously helping. The bullpen so far is still suspect though. Putz and K-Rod are fine, but getting to them is the problem. There was no reason last night they had to use K-Rod. They need to bullpen to shut games down like that.

Wow, a ridiculous catch by Reed Johnson last night to rob Prince Fielder of a grand slam. I thought it was awesome the way Fielder tipped his cap to Reed for the great play.

And then Johnson comes up the next inning and promptly gets drilled in the back.

A Cardinals fan here. I'm so happy to see Chris Carpenter returning from his injuries of the last couple of seasons. He looked really sharp the other night. Watching Pujols play is always such a joy. I'm really hopeful of the Cards chances this year!

Braves are looking good, sitting at 5-1 after sweeping the Nats over the weekend. Should be 6-0 since they blew the aforementioned 10-3 7th inning lead in the one loss.

Next series is home against the Marlins who are also 5-1, that should be a better test of how good the Braves are.

The Braves look good so far, but the Nats are gonna lose 100 games this season. You can't exactly judge them by their play against the Nats. I think the Phillies win the East again with the Braves coming in 3rd, Mets 2nd. It's going to be a race in the East all year though.

Yep, that's why I said the Marlins series will be a better indicator. As was winning 2 out of 3 at Philly (and should have been a sweep) to start the season.

Hope they're decent this year as I'm moving to Atlanta over the summer.

yeah i know what you mean. Feliciano looks shakey at times and i still have high hopes on Darren O'Day....even though he got plunked the last two games he was in. Brian Stokes though looks like a beast. I think he is our long guy. I liking 6-7 Stokes,8th Putz, 9th K-Rod.
RIP Harry Kalas, you will forever be the voice of the phils...
RIP. The voice of NFL Films will be missed.

yeah they do. Jair Jurjens looks like he is coming in to his own. That kid will be the ACE of the Braves staff for years to come. The Braves taking 2-3 from the champs is a good start. I wish the mets had the same kind of start. But hopefully they pull through.

OPening night as Citifield tonight. I wish i could be there. =(

Lets give it up to the O-Dawg, that was an awesome cycle yesterday. Man Randy Johnson has fallen far. To be fair he is old, but was bringing it in the mid 80's. A great way to start the home opener.

I was sad to see Randy Johnson go, but so far it looks like it was the right decision... although it is still early in the season.

Congratulations, O-Dawg! I'm still a fan, even if he is wearing the blue, but it's not his fault that ownership wants to field a cheap team.

Anyway, any Cards fans just watch the game!?

Sawks/A's...5-5, 12th inning. This is the game that never ends...

1) They could've saved everyone some time by just not starting Dice K at all tonight, Masterson or someone else clearly would've done better protecting a 3 run lead.

2) Pretty sure I've heard some Lady Gaga over the PA in the park a few times over the course of this game. Don't ask me why I know what her music sounds like..

Probably already been said but Beckett got hosed. I guess old school baseball is officially dead when you get suspended for throwing it "head level".

I'm kinda surprised at the 6 day suspension as well, especially considering the umps felt it was unintentional, and he was one of the only ones not thrown out of the game from the incident.

Bob Watson is a hypocrite and has it out for the Red Sox. He threatened to fine and suspend Francona for wearing a windbreaker or fleece over his jersey top, which he does because of a medical condition.

I don't like how umpires are given the task of being mind readers by MLB. This same type of BS happened to the Cubs last year. Ted Lilly was tossed in the second inning because a pitch went high and tight on a Braves hitter. Lou was forced to burn his pen to finish that game.

I think it was an ESPN broadcast b/c they had Lou wired for sound and you could hear the ump tell him Lilly was tossed for the intentional pitch and Piniella kept saying "How do you know that?"

I read the Jason Giambi workout this morning and it's great for a laugh. I don't know what they expected from a larger guy that no longer uses the juice.

nice bounce back win today and of all days on Jackie Robinson Day. Looks like we got the good side of Ollie today and he pitched a great game. we need to take the rubber match tomorrow and it won't be easy with peavy on the mound.

but man i have to give big ups to Tim Wakefield and Ian Kinsler. Wakefield no hit bid in the 8th and Kinsler another 2nd basemen that hit for the cycle as the O's got DEMOLISHED by the Rangers.

if i remember correctly, joba didnt throw at youkilis after he already called for time, like abreu did. and the reason that it was 6 games is cause they know itll get appealed and reduced to 3 or 4

well I don't feel that a suspension was necessary, 6 games makes sense for a starting pitcher. What is the point of giving a starting pitcher less then 4 games? They wouldn't miss a start that way.

As for throwing after time, beckett took way to long looking at the runner. But stopping a motion could cause injury to a pitcher. The way I look at it, beckett had a free pass to hit him as time was called. Good for beckett.

not the start i was hoping for and dropping 2/3 to the padres..hopefully livan can rebound and give us a win against the Brew Crew. Willie is also coming back to Flushings...so it will be interesting to see that also.

You know it's getting bad when you have to start counting on Livan.

Alright, time to pull Penny. No rest for the BP. Seriously, something needs to be done. Batted around on him and bam, jack by Markakis. 7-0 top 2nd, seems like the game is over, the offense has been anemic.
Beckett should of been thrown out of the game. He was the one that walked off the mound and came towards Abreu
After Abreu started running his mouth. Nothing would have happened had the Angels not come out the dugout. Joe West leads Abreu back to the batters box and that would have been the end of it.

Trying to keep my true feelings in check

Good game against the Giants, surprised Sanchez pitched so well, the Diamondbacks usually smash the ball when he takes the mound.

Man I have to feel for Haren, every time he pitches well the bats go cold.

I'm sorry, but that that strikeout on CoJack in the 8th was full of shit though.
You know it's getting bad when you have to start counting on Livan.
yeah i know

but the guy has pitched better than the 2-4 in our rotation...and his stuff is still pretty sick. That bugs bunny curve is slow..that it still mistifies hitters. But if he could keep us in there and give us a chance...ill take it. He did well tonight until the 6th i think and then Braun snapped that homer..besides that homer he was pretty solid. But hey we even got a win from the most unlikeliest producer in Luis Castillo. I know it wont be like this for the rest of the season but it was amazing to see him beat out that throw and win it for us in the 9th.

that said we still messed up today. 0-13 with RISP. thats a said number. 3 time bases loaded and we got nothing. Not even a sac. This needs to get fixed immediatly or we arent going anywhere.

Well congrats to Sheff for being the first met to hit 500....lol thats pretty sad we never had a 500 homer hitter yet and Delgado will be our next by the time season's end.

They didnt come outta the dugout until beckett stepped off the mound. if it was an accident i would understand, but:
1) i refuse to believe that if he absoultely had to throw it, a pitcher of his caliber couldnt have thrown it over the plate, and
2) he showed no remorse, but instead stepped toward the plate and started barking back at abreu, which can only lead me to the conclusion that he was pissed the ump called for time and took his frustration out by throwin at abreu's head. needless to say, i lost alot of respect for him that day.

props to sheffield for 500 and kubel for yet another cycle

Castillo has started off hot. If he can stay healthy, hopefully we can get the Castillo we thought we had when they gave him that contract a couple years back. Livan is an inning eater but his fastball hardly gets over 86. If he is our best starter after Santana for the rest of the year we are in big trouble.

They did get a Sac fly in the 1st with the bases loaded by Delgado and then Castro walked with the bases loaded ater on. That said, they have still struggled with runners in scoring position. They need a win today with Santana on the mound. Hopefully they get that and then take the game Sunday. A little win streak maybe will spark something.

Also a congrats to Sheff for his 500th. It was the game tying HR so at least it meant something as well. I just hope that was not the only reason he signed to play this year. I hope he really wants to win a WS and can help the Mets. We will see...

Well here we go, Milton Bradley gets his first suspension of the year... So far in his first ten games he's hitting .056, had been injured, and now suspended.

At first all Beckett did was step forward, hold his glove up, and wait for the ball to be thrown back to him. Then Abreu and Beckett started jawing at each other, and the Angels went insane.

Santana pitched another great game today. Mets need to win tomorrow for a sweep. They will need to score a lot more than a run tomorrow if they want to win though.

yeah, i feel ya on that but its going to be more tough now that Pelfry is on the shelf. Figueroa had a decent spring but i dont know how he will fair in a couple starts.

Sheff is a great pick up for us. He is a better hitter than Marlon Andersen and a better fielder. I think he will pay dividends for us later in the season.

yeah man, David hasn't been right at all. Something is off with him where he can't get people in. Everytime we have 1st and 2nd...he whiffs and the inning is over. Im sure enough its his usual early season slump because his defense has been spectacular. Just his plate composure has been really off lately.
LOLOL @ Wang
i feel bad for yankee fans. thats the second time those fans paid good money to see their team getting blown out.

Luckily the guy who has the Giants in my Fantasy league has them benched.

Man this is looking like a good game, those fuckers for not televising it.
All the great stats Lincecum is giving my fantasy team today are going to be wiped out by Wang. :whistle2:|
I'm lucky that I've not had any injuries yet, but my guys can't hit for average to save their life so far. I'm also fixing to give Milton Bradley the boot if he doesn't get his shit straightened out pretty soon.

yeah seriously, he does need to get his act together. He just got suspended for 2 and there are still some decent pick ups out on the wire.

You'd have to have been insane to start Wang today. After his last 2 starts? I dropped him to waivers on all my teams already.
Lincecum with 13 strikeouts and gets a loss.
Lincecum didn't get a loss, he didn't let in any runs.
