2009 MLB Discussion Thread
I misunderstood. The number is not how many games. That's his projection if the current trends continued out to a full 162 game season. At this point, I think it would be halved. Also, some are complaining about how he figured out strength of schedule.

And since you hate him phear, you definitely won't want to check out his explanation of just how devastating Lincecum's changeup is.

I don't hate him....it's just geek shit like that, where people think math can somehow show who's good who's bad.

Moneyball.....great idea....high Base % is good.....but equations can't add up to how devastating Lincecum is.....how filthy Beckett is in October.....and how ridiculously fast Bonafacio is....

Moneyball philosophy (as termed by Michael Lewis) has nothing to do with on-base percentage.

Also, statistics might not show just how ridiculously fast Bonifacio is.... but they do tell me he can't hit and is a shitty career base stealer.

I think I agree with you in that sabermetrics are currently being overvalued, but only because it's still in its infancy as a science and has a long way to go.

I mean, let's be real here. Youkilis probably never gets a shot without sabermetrics. And baby, look at him now.

Not only that, but the metrics support Lincecum being devastating. That piece says that Lincecum has the 2nd best changeup in baseball. It doesn't even cover his other pitches, which are all ++ as far as I can tell. Nobody is going to have two pitches that are #1 in baseball, but having two in the top 5 would make you legendary. And that's what the numbers say Lincecum is going to be if it stays this way. I think you'd agree.

Saying something like that about a Giant just made me throw up in my mouth a little.
That has to be the stupidest fuckin' thing i've ever witnessed.....and I saw Seth Green once try and Soulja Boy on a dance floor.

Giants haven't been lucky....we've been what we've been.....we lead the league in Shutouts.

Pitching = Excellent.

Offense = Sucks.
Last nights game had to be infuriating for Giants fans. Any chance they go out and get a bat? You would think they could get a guy like Alex Rios at a huge discount.
whoo hoo. now we are 8 1/2 back and about to sign one of the ugliest shortstops in the league in Julio Lugo. Ok Omar....what next?!
The only good thing that can come from this season is the firing of Omar.

Yeah.....it's infuriating that the offense is horrible.....watched a majority of the game......the Giants are like 1-7 vs the Pirates in PNC Park or some shit.....

The Giants have been looking for a bat.....someone along the lines of shit-holes like Freddie Sanchez/Nick Johnson who aren't any better than Juan Uribe/Travis Ishikawa....

They're better off going for someone like Victor Martinez.....with so many pitching prospects other than Bumgarner/Alderson they can and most likely will make a move....

Until then 2-1....1-0 games are in the Giants future.

Dude, we need to clean house. after this series, our season is over. Fire everyone and then put up a fire sale. Keep the Core minus Delgado and of course Santana. I swear i cant wait for the day if we can find a born again Frank Cashens and Davey Johnson...heck im open to bring him back...or of course get our man back,Bobby V. A full 9 games back just put us in obscurity.

oh yea we lose Nieve and Sheffield now. Im taking bets on the next met player to get injured. This is ridiculous.

edit: I REALLY HOPE JERRY IS NOT fucking serious about putting Livan in the corner spots during some games.......I can't stand this no more.

tell me about it. This team is an absolute joke. 9 out and we luck out with the natties but the cubbies are getting decimated by the phillies. and who knows, this team may lose to the natties. It wont surprise me.

Oh and i got great news today. Jerry and Omar are keeping their jobs for next year. Its just what i've been asking for all season long. I hope in the 71 games left that Jeff Wilpon has a change of heart and dump these two schmoes.

Why Delgado? He's 37 years old.
Why Delgado? He's 37 years old.
yeah minus delgado. He is the last year of his contract and he is being paid big money but we also need to get younger. so even though we lose a ton of power....we lose his contract and his age. I love Delgado but the mets do need to get younger.

I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Minaya, Manuel jobs safe

WASHINGTON -- New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel's job is safe.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya gave the vote of confidence during the fourth inning of New York's game against the Washington Nationals on Monday night. Minaya said that he recently spoke with Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, and Wilpon was supportive.

"I want you to be our general manager, and I want Jerry to be our manager," Minaya said he was told by Wilpon.

Minaya, who's in his fifth season as the Mets' GM, said the conversation occurred "a couple of weeks ago."

Minaya said he told Wilpon: "Jeff, thank you for that vote. I don't think about those things, and Jerry [doesn't] either."

Minaya said he understood there would be talk about firings since the injury-ravaged Mets entered Monday five games under .500 (43-48) and nine games back of Philadelphia in the NL East.

yeah i saw that on SNY last night. Well my confidence is now officially shot for 2010. anyway enough of my gatorade hate. back to baseball.

You guys watch baseball, usually a vote of confidence is the precursor to a firing. Willie Randolph got a vote of confidence on 5/29 of last year and was fired 6/17.

That way my first thought too, but this is the Mets we're talking about. They're a different, somehow more pathetic organization now.

The Mets should hire Isiah Thomas.
Don't watch Mets games but off the top of my head......trade Wright/Delgado......keep Beltran.....
Delgado is old, injured and a free agent after this year.

Yankees are back in first place.
Don't watch Mets games but off the top of my head......trade Wright/Delgado......keep Beltran.....
Yeah im trying not to. Definitley did not watch tonight's loss to the Natties.

This organization sucks! from the TOP TO THE BOTTOM. everything just stinks. I hope the Wilpons are happy that they are keeping on a useless GM and a dumb ass of a manager and keeping the most incompetent medical/training staff ever to be assembled.

Well Omar, how did your boy look tonight with 4 walks and the team you assembled can only hit singles. Omar GTFO of NY please!
This organization sucks! from the TOP TO THE BOTTOM. everything just stinks. I hope the Wilpons are happy that they are keeping on a useless GM and a dumb ass of a manager and keeping the most incompetent medical/training staff ever to be assembled.
Not that I think Manuel is a great manager, but if anything, it should show the Wilpons who's really to blame. Last year Willie Randolph got railroaded out of town like he was the cause of all the team's problems. One year later, it's actually gotten worse. If ownership can't see that Minaya is a horrible GM, they deserve to have the team taken away.

For what it's worth, I do think Mets fans should just learn to live with Omar for the rest of his contract. Yes, he hasn't done anything worthwhile recently (except getting Sheffield... but a monkey would have done that), but you guys forget a simple fact.... Before Omar was hired, the Mets were ass. Sure basically all he did was spend the Wilpon's money, but the fact is he helped turn that team around. Unless everyone liked the days of Karim Garcia, Braden Looper, Jae Wong Seo (oh yes, you guys definitely forgot him!), Mo Vaughn, Jason Phillips.... Just my two cents though.
Son of a bitch! Another extra innings loss for the Cubs.
Yeah, I was watching that game. I really wouldn't have trusted Samardzija in that situation. He's not experienced enough.

Definitely. Omar is a joke, and it's time he finally paid, instead of the managers. I think Jerry's done an average job, at best, but if he goes, Omar needs to get the same treatment. I mean, how do you give Perez $12 million a year? Seriously? He had a 4.22 ERA pitching in the NL last year. Were teams really falling over each other to get him?

Nick Swisher makes yet another bad play in the outfield. He is seriously one of the worst defensive outfielders I have ever seen on a regular basis, and I've seen some bad ones.

^^See, it's plays like the one that just happened that makes me not hate Nick Swisher's defense. He makes bad plays, but he'll make good plays. Overall, he just tries hard and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Yeah, I was watching that game. I really wouldn't have trusted Samardzija in that situation. He's not experienced enough.
The problem was that they were so deep into the game the only two pitchers left on the bench were Samardzija and Gregg. I think Jeff still has the potential to be a great pitcher but like you said right now he's just a little too inexperienced.

And he redeemed himself to end that inning with a hell of a catch.

If you watch Yankee games you should know that Damon is 1000000 times worse. He has the range of a 90 year old woman using a walker and has the arm of a noodle. Yankees are going to go after Bay or Holliday in the off season.

Giants just sayin' fuck the playoffs......

I do blame myself for heading off on vacation for two weeks with the other-half....

SELLERS.

The Red Sox need to pull a win out tonight to save the sweep and stay within a game of the Yankees.

And the Sox made 2 moves today. Getting rid of Lugo and actually getting something in return. Chris Duncan and a PTBNL or Cash. Thats a lot better than just letting him go and getting nothing for him, even if they are paying his salary.

And they also acquired Adam Larcoche from Pirates for 2 minor leaguers.

Good deal for the sox. They can move youk to first and have laroche start at third with lowell being on the shelf
Also duncan is a good utility player so he may come in handy.
And AHEM*

The METS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First bernazard acts like an asshole and they just another series to the worst team in baseball. Well can't get any worse than this or can it?

Unfortunately, wrong LaRoche brother. We got the first basemen, who keeps Youks at third, and Mike Lowell on the bench. Lowell looks terrible right now. Then again, the whole team is terrible right now. But Lowell speed has been cut in half and he already was arguably the slowest man in the league.

The Red Sox offense and defense looks brutual. Pitching has been spotty at times, but not terrible. Jason Bay, JD Drew, Jason Varitek, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Nick Green all look lost at the plate. Jason and JD will probably turn it around. Varitek is old and his offense is unfortunately part of the package. Ellsbury reminds me of Willie Mays Hays. And Nick Green, well, he's Nick Green, he was going to start sucking eventually.

Also, depending on his neck and back situation, getting Chris Duncan from the Cardinals was a nice move. I can only hope his medical records showed that he would eventually get the power back.

:( So I'm watching Tampa versus the White Sox and Upton just misplayed da game thatlet two runs score. Now the score is tied 3-3.

Anyway, i don't know if you guys know this, but there's a free trial of MLB Extra Innings going on. Otherwise, I'd still be watching Willingham beat the Mets, since the Yanks already played

Damon stinks in the outfield, too, but Swisher is fundamentally one of the worst ball players I have ever seen. Besides dropping easy, easy balls, like the one today, he is constantly making baserunning blunders. Awful ones, like getting thrown out by 10 feet when attempting to stretch singles into doubles. There's nothing wrong with being aggressive, but he does this once every ten games. A man has got to know his limits. And as far as some of his "good" catches go, they are often created by the bad jumps and bad reads he has, turning what should be a routine play into a difficult one.

Ah thought it was andy. Andy would have been the better deal IMO. but part time fill in nonetheless. Im sure enough all those guys will pull out of it. The Sox usually turn up the heat in august and september. i dont think Boston has to panic although the yankees are playing hot right now. They still need another big bat.

at this point......ANYONE can be the mets. .My mom can probably strike a side out on the mets line up or induce Tatis in to 13th double play.

;) yeah about time lol. Y'know we shoulda saw this coming when they signed Oliver Perez to that big contract....infact we shoulda saw it coming 2 years ago when Castillo was signed to that bloated contract. Until this team gets rid of the 3 headed snake(omar, jerry, and tony)..I cant be positive at all. Lovable losers of the 90's i loved...but this team is not even a shell of that. Im waiting for the day we find another Fonzi or Olerud.

I hope you were watching SNY tonight and watching how much of an ass Omar looked while talking to reporters. All repeat and dodgey answers. Even the guys from Daily News Live were tearing Omar a new one. many reasons why the Mets aren't even close to becoming NY's team. They choose to bring embarassment to themselves every year. 2 chokes and a half naked executive bench fight later. I'm just wondering whats going to happen next.

What a night! At 6:00pm last night, I went to a Houston Veterans Committee meeting. The guy sitting next to me had tickets to the Astros/Cards game lying on the table. 5 rows behind the Astros dugout. I say "damn man, nice seats". He was given the 4 tickets an hour earlier by a law firm partner (season tickets) and could only find 1 person to go with him. Gives me the other 2. I called up a friend and we saw the game.

One of the best games I've ever seen live. Oswalt vs. Carpenter and both looked like aces. Astros get 2 in the bottom of the 9th to win it, capped off by Tejada with the bottom of the ninth, 2 out game winning single to sweep their division rivals (and divisional leader) putting them a game out of 1st.

Then I get home and see Manny crack a pinch hit first pitch grand slam.

Hell of a night, gentlemen.

Swisher at least has some range in the OF. I cant count the amount of times I have seen a ball hang in the air for a bit and drop right in front of Damon. Plus he has dropped alot more in the OF than Swisher.

Yes, nice job cooling off the Cards. Now if you could just step aside and let the Cubs on thru that would be great...LOL ;)

Seriously though the NL central is just one big cluster fuck of mediocrity. If one team would get hot just for a couple weeks they'd run away with the div title. My damn Cubs have squandered so many quality starts with our pathec offense it's sickening!

I actually have not been watching as many games as I used to because I am so tired of the stuff that has been going on and the direction of the team. I do still keep up with what's going on though and I read and actually listened online to the Omar interview. If he is not fired at the end of the season then there is no hope.

Mark Buehrle throws a Perfect Game against the Rays. Wise makes the catch of the year in the top of the 9th to rob a homerun.

QFT.. ive been listening to WFAN all morning and through lunch...and even the radio personalities are calling for all their heads. Its great. I hope the Wilpons were listening to how much a joke people think this franchise is.
Wow. Congrats to Buehrle.
What a game, What a robbery, What a Performance. He already threw a No-Hitter. Might as well add perfecto to his belt. Whats great about this performance, it was against the Rays. Purely a slugging team with power hitters across the board. Congrats Buehrle.

Interesting the rays are very active in pursuing victor martinez and to a lesser extent cliff lee...

Allegedly, according to the projo writter, sean mcadams, the indians offered martinez straight up for buckholtz. Curt Schilling was on weei with mcadams and was saying that they have no place for martinez. I wholeheartly disagree. 2 days a wk at 1b (one give youk a day off, one for lowell) 2 days a week at catcher (varitek can't hit anymore and he is a horrible 2nd half hitter) and 2 days a week at DH ( sorry pappi thanks for the memories, but a .225 hitter is not needed at DH in the cleanup slot anymore.

Holy crap that was a helluva catch. It felt like that guy was willing to go 10 rows deep to get it if he had to.

Congrats to the White Sox.
