Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. The next Best Buy penny guide drop may not be until the MLK holiday. Last year there were no drops through most of November, December and early January until the MLK holiday. If they wait until then it should be a BIG one, covering all guides released through early November.

I went to Blockbuster tonight to pick up GTA San Andreas for $20 (forgot to use my 10% off coupon in my pocket, doh!) and took a list of penny guides with me to the store. I found 3 off the list (GTA: San Andreas, Ninja Gaiden, and Destroy All Humans), but only Destroy All Humans rang up at a penny. The other two were still full price.

This was at the Avon (Indianapolis) BB store.

Yes, Best Buy...they are both BB so I'm always getting them mixed up. I went to both in the same night. At Blockbuster I bought another $100 in gift certificates to get the $10 free. I've gotten $400 worth so far...my whole family is getting BB GCs for Christmas...heh.

I think guides that scanned for a penny are suppose to be pulled from the shelf already. But it's up to individual store to decide if they want to sell them...

I had different experience when I tried to buy those penny guides at different stores:

GameStop - clerk had no problem letting me buy the guides for a penny. She even commented that it's a bargain

Toy R Us - clerk said he's not suppose to sell guides that scanned for a penny. But he let me buy them anyways

EBGames - clerk warned me that he will sell the penny guides to me this time, but he will not sell penny guides to me in the future

Best Buy - clerk thought it was a mistake so he went and asked his manager if he can sell the guide for a penny. It took a long time waiting for the manager to accept

The BB near me stopped selling guides for the most part. They now only have the WoW, EQII, Matrix Online, the Sims 2, and a few Pokemon guides.

God of War, where? BB was cleared out of these before the penny status and then certainly most in the nation would have been snapped up within days.

I have a quick question about Best Buy pennied guides..
Would they say .01 at the register or would they still have the regular price?
At the San Bruno Best Buy, they had a huge stack of assorted guides in front of the shelves which were also in disarray. I wasn't sure if any of them were pennied, since some people tell me it's YMMV.
And I'm assuming there's no way for you to check the prices yourself? Like a self-scanner?

AFAIK, BB guides are NOT YMMV. Also, some BB stores actually label them a penny, some pull them, others do nothing. They will ring up for a penny if they are pennied out when you go to check out. Also, I don't think BB has self scanners, at least mine doesn't.

After visiting 4 Gamestops today, I finally tracked down a single Xenosaga II LE. After managing to get it out the door (woohoo, they let me have it!) I open it up, only to find out some tard stole the soundtrack out of it. Damn bastards! The hunt continues...

Once I had one up to the register, she went through the motions, asking if I already have the game and all. Then when she said the total, the guide came up full price. I notice that it was a signature series and not the limited edition, but dammit all.

I got nothin. My GS had moved all of its guides to the back, so I had to ask. The guy said they didn't, but I'm not so sure I believe him as I was just there a couple days ago and they had at least 3 or four. It's strange that no guides are on the floor anymore though. Maybe just for the Holidays to put out more items.

At the Colma Best Buy, penny guides were limited. I found a guy and striked up a conversation with him so I could get him to sell me the guides. When he found out we had the same birthday, the deal was cemented, yay! 5 guides for a nickel.

There were a few Call of Duty: Finest Hours left,
I think I grabbed the last GTA:SA
A few Battle for Middle Earths
I think one more Half-Life 2
And a few Doom 3s

They had a LOT of GTA: Liberty Cities, Madden 2006s, a Soul Calibur 3, a bunch of Guild Wars, as well...whenever those get pennied.

I went there on thursday looking for some of the 9.99 games that dropped and a employee say that i printed a partial list of what i was looking for and started getting semi irate. "$%$#^#$^ internet" and "thats private company info thats not supposed to be there."

I can understand when we get ahead of them on an advertised sale and empty them so that they dont even have any stock for the sale but in this case its just a unadvertised price drop, a clearance if you will. bleh oh well.

on the upside they had xbo360's for sale



oh and shrike4242 since you seem to be in a location that still allows you to acquire a fair amount of guides if you every just happen to have extras you don't want let me know =P my town went from 5 or 6 very fruitful stores to one hit or miss store for the most part...

Yea, the one store we can count on is BB. Other than that there is pretty much nothing.

When I went to TRU Thursday, that guy was complaining about that being company info to me too. I just made sure not to tell him where I get my info. I never liked him.

I don't think chapters or indigo leave out that stuff, neither do borders or barnes n noble. When they're pennied they're supposed to be sent back for credit for the store. I've never seen any booksellers sell anything for a penny. I've heard they do have penny guides technically, just that they are familiar with the system and pull them immediately.

Usually we have good information on TRU price drops, including pennied guides, from several people. So unless one of them says a drop is happening, probably no new drops.
