Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Someone asked me about the biggest influences I've had in my role the other day. CAG was one of the top items on the list.
They used to show film strips in 5th grade warning me about these kinds of "influences".

John was a nice boy, real all-American go-getter. Good grades, spot on the football team and Jane just agreed to be his steady. Then he fell in with CAG...

Just to add more context here, I did comment on this yesterday. Basically, given my bandwidth, I have two options:

I can pop in and hang out, do some giveaways, answer questions related to customer service issues like incorrect charges, buying the wrong DRM and needing a refund etc.

OR

I can pop in and answer every question asked, many of which are usually "will X be on sale for less?", these answers usually consist of a 1 word response "yes" or "no".

I can run a poll if you guys would like to tell me in a quantifiable manner what kind of interaction you'd prefer.

Cheers,

Tony
As others have stated, please just do what you do and continue hanging out with us as you have time! We appreciate all your hard work and care :)

By the way, this may become one of those yes/no questions, but are there any talks at all with Platinum or Konami for a sale on Metal Gear Rising?

Thanks!

I think cag was created by evil execs in the video game industry. The amount I have spent on cheap games quadruples... sextuples(?) the amount I would have spent normally.

Nuuvem just had it for ~$16 yesterday. Not sure if that's still going. I wouldn't expect anything lower for a while.

Since joining CAG, I no longer can afford drugs.

So, that's sort of a good thing....I guess.

Tony's Prototype 1+2+DLC bundle.

#NeverForget

...there was also some other Tony-pack (Sega?) around that time that hasn't been beaten.
That bundle for $7.49 was crazy, but the Absolutely Great Square Pack for $9.99 that had Deus Ex: Human Revolution Augmented Edition, Deus Ex: Human Revolution - The Missing Link, Hitman: Blood Money, Just Cause, Just Cause 2, Quantum Conundrum, The Last Remnant and Supreme Commander 2 was probably the craziest one I can remember.

The game just came out!

And it was available for pre-order on Amazon and on Steam for only $19.99, so it probably will be awhile before it's on sale..
Haha that's true, but I passed back then due to my general apathy toward Metal Gear games after the humongous disappointment of MGS4... then I start hearing that Rising has less of the pretentious 1 hour cut scenes and more of just pure twitch-based gameplay. I didn't realize it was developed by Platinum, and as a huge fan of Vanquish (and somewhat fan of Bayonetta), I want to put it at the top of my "to-play" list. I guess I'll wait until it's $15 or something.

As for the Nuuvem deal, I thought MGR was one of the first games to prevent cross-region purchases? Are Nuuvem keys still valid for a US Steam account?

The Square Bundle will never be beaten:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PNLAAW/

And a clear case of a publisher not providing keys to restock because the deal was just too good.
I think it was a bit more than that actually. Amazon doesn't limit the number of keys any one individual can buy (says the person who grabbed 16 free Hotline Miamis to give away last year) and I suspect there was a genuine concern that resellers were buying those keys up.

The region it's good for is N, S, and Central America. I've seen people who bought in in NA confirm it worked fine for them.

Oh, interesting. Good to know. Hm, maybe the $17 on Nuuvem is worth it then.

Slightly off topic, but does all this region locking only matter upon time of purchase? I am moving to China this year; will I be able to access the same games there as I have here, or will some games be locked out for me?

Depends on the game. Some can't be activated in certain regions.. while other games can only be played/launched in certain regions. So yeah, you may end up with some games that can't be played in China unless you use a VPN.

That was simply Activision accidentally authorizing that bundle. And getting an EC coupon for it even though the eligibility didn't start until later. I doubt that bundle will even be matched within a couple years, let alone beat.

Tony, you should think about having the authorization email printed and framed, it may become a collectors item :)

Yes, and we need another one of those types of SE bundles :) keep on emailing 'em Tony, please!!

1/13-1/16 on Sabotuer pack :).

Cheers,
Tony
In for that pack!

Now if only the C&C would be cheaper than $10 Mr. EA guy, I might buy it. But it was already $5 during December, and that would have not only not made me waste an EC coupon, it would have gotten me an extra one to use. So thanks, but no thanks. Besides it will be less sometime soon from gamefly or GMG with a 20% or 25% off coupon.

Gotcha. Maybe the best idea is for me to enable offline mode before I move since they apparently fixed the two-week time limitation bug.

On topic: My favorite deals were the limited time bundles offered during the Friday video streams, most notably the Prototype bundle and the Max Payne (I think?) bundle. My next favorite bundle was definitely the Microsoft Indie one :)

edit: Nevermind on the Nuuvem deal. Apparently it was available there for $14 preorder. As a CAG, I can't in good conscience pay $17 when I know it was $3 cheaper a month ago. Argh!

Now that I think about it, I can't think of any games that force you to be in NA to run them.. You might be safe. Most (if not all?) NA tagged games only need to be activated in that region, but not played/launched from it. You might have some issues with activating some region tagged games in the future though.

It was... but it had the gall to remind me owned all of it except QC & SC2.

I'm not sure what you're thinking of, but it's the the above Squeenix bundle.

Tony,

Any chance of LLTQ at $7.50 before EC? :)
You might want to spell that out... it took me a bit to puzzle that out.

That makes sense! I found this bit of helpful information in the SPUF:

"I am in china too. You can play every region restricted game here, but you cannot buy directly from the store, you will need to ask someone to buy from you and send/trade or activate using a cd key.

Is perfectly fine according to steam rules. And you can play online like nothing happens.
I have been doing that for almost 2 years"

So I may need to request some help from fellow CAGers in the future :)
