Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

It's been in bundles for just about that price in the past.
It's been that price individually, too:

Just to clarify, this isn't Amazon deciding to be big meanies to CAGs all of a sudden by collecting taxes. They are being forced to do this in many/most cases by the state itself. Blame your local government if you're going to point any fingers.

Manifesto of a New Poster

So what's the difference between [Instant Access] and [Download], you guys?

So what's the difference between [Download] and [Online Game Code], you guys?

How can I find out what type of DRM a game has without checking the top of the store page, you guys?

I can't find the game I just bought, you guys. I bought it over an hour ago, why has it not materialized in my living room yet?

So apparently the game is in my games and software library, you guys. Can someone help me find this? Nothing comes up when I search Google Maps, you guys.

This is bullshit. How can I get my money back from Amazon, you guys?

You guys?

All lurked, the first two by a ungrateful lurker called 'Bruticis'. =P
That's weird, I have two of the same bundle so one set of keys should be good. Try these instead:

I took the top two keys, but I already owned them so… I'm not sure if I claimed them or not, and I didn't try the bottom set. If I did redeem them, thanks Bruticus, even if they were wasted on me.

I tried the two top keys and indeed they weren't claimed. Dind't try the others for obvious reasons.

Thank you Bruticis for your generosity.

Used the last Desura code in the list. Thanks for Zigfrak. It seems like you yourself used the one directly above it.

So according to this FAQ I checked, I'm only at chapter 20 of 33 in TR. It feels like this game is way too long. Probably because it's poorly balanced; there's way too much combat and the game mechanics just don't work that well for the large group assaults that start showing up constantly a ways into the game. Kind of annoying, tbh; it could have been a better game by far if they'd slimmed it down about 1/4-1/3 and also toned down the number of enemies by like...75%

Sounds like you just want to play a different game. I thought pacing was fine, though Lara becomes murdergirl fairly jarringly. And I neven had a problem with the enemies or their count, if anything it became too easy and tactics just weren`t necessary. That said, I liked the game, but feel it's a bit over hyped.

Pirates was the only game I wish it would have been into the lowest Tier. Just for the old times I sunk into the original game in the Amiga

Fair warning, Cargo Commander, while a fun game, has a form of always-on drm built into it that if it breaks for you (as it did for me), will make the game unplayable. Apparently the bug has existed since the game was in beta and has never been fixed. Personally I believe the issue is related to Windows 7 64 bit so if you're running that OS I'd suggest avoiding it.

The roll attack is your friend in close combat.

Sorta this. I always disagree with the the complaints over her quick transition to being a calculated killer. This completely fits in with being a grad student pushed to the edge. I agree, later on it just gets easy... I tried to stick to braining those who stood in way with my trusty climbing pick. (Except where that's not viable (e.g. Shantytown). I assumed the praise was because it's a very pretty game (play with everything max, including TressFX if you can.)

Yeah, I agree - in TR 2013, Lara went from getting beat-up for the first few hours to killing everybody like no tomorrow. Thing is - most games, that'd just start at the "kill everybody like no tomorrow" phase. They wouldn't even try to show a change in the character like TR 2013 attempted. While the change did felt quite rushed - I'm glad they attempted it. I just wished....it was more gradual of a change from "shooting animals to survive" and just traversing the area all alone (which I found WAY more interesting) to then wiping out tons of enemies like they're flies.

Granted, I wasn't in love w/ the story and characters (felt like something we'd expect in a TR game, Indiana Jones movies, or anything of that sort) & that the puzzle elements weren't too hard in the Side Quest Tombs here in TR 2013....

...but it's the open-world game-world; extremely improved combat mechanics; and stunning technical + artistic look of TR 2013 that makes it hard to put down.

All my complaints are so minor w/ this game.

This is just an awesome, awesome game.

Oh, roll attack is great. The problem is more when there's a ton of guys all at once scattered all over the room throwing. When they're using cover and throwing grenades it doesn't do a whole lot of good to close in on somebody and hope they don't drop a grenade as you kill them and blow you up in the process. There are a number of areas in the game where you just get straight-up swarmed by a bunch of dudes, and the way combat works just doesn't give you a whole lot of ability to deal with it. Specific examples are after you leave the helicopter when healing yourself, at the end of shantytown where you're cornered and get swarmed, and in Solarii Fortress where you're in the room with all the columns and guys marching in at one end. The issue I always run into there is that If I'm scrambling around taking quick shots, I still get hit quite a bit. If I stop long enough to shoot at enemies, even from behind cover, I get hit by grenades. The combat works on a much more realistic level compared to many FPS games...which is good, except that the game throws you into combat situations where you should die, as the ones I mentioned.

Granted I'm sure part of it is that I'm just not that great at the game...but the combat and weapons the game provides you with clearly portray Lara as a sneak and sniper type of fighter rather than a guns-blazing massive firefighter type. Those massive firefights end up being annoying as a result.

You're wrong.
How so? Hard to take this type of response at all seriously, tbh.

I know TR 2013 isn't a short game by any means (I had about 23 hours listed w/ it, according to Steam)...

...but, I certainly would've liked for it go on longer, if there was to be more development on story + character elements.

The exploration and stealth aspects of the game feel about right. It's the long combat segments followed by minutes of running away as the entire world explodes. That aspect drags the game a lot, at least for me.

This isn't a "Oh, I loved the old TR games, this one sucks!" kind of thing, btw. This is the first TR game I've played and I went into it with no real expectations. I got it with my video card, so didn't put any research into it or go in knowing really what it was going to be like. Me feeling like the game isn't quite balanced as far as weaponry, combat, crazy number of bad guys, and story is entirely from the game content and nothing else.

This is all going into personal preferences, anyways.

Long combat sequences didn't bother me, since I felt the combat was much, much better in TR 2013 - especially compared to previous TR's like Anniversary + Underworld.

Like I said - what bugged me a bit was Lara's quick transformation from "Fragile girl getting beat to Hell" to "I'm gonna kill everybody 'cause I'm Lara Croft" in about 3 hours. Of course, I like I said - I would've liked better character development and better storytelling. Oh, and I think they did the right things putting puzzles mostly in the side-quests of Tombs - but, I would've liked some harder puzzles in the Tombs ; especially in the later parts of the game

But - that all was such a minor complaint for me, given how much I enjoyed the actual open-world game-world; improved combat; and the gorgeously stunning PC version (in Nixxes doing PC ports, I trust). Flaws and all - I still really liked the game and thought it was one of the better games that I played in 2013.
