It started outside Atlanta, but Rick was found in Atlanta by Glenn, like in the show. The camp is clearly within walking distance of the city limits, and shortly after Rick arrives there's snow all over. Before, during, and after Hershel's farm.
I think the show just didn't have it in the budget to film in snow, so they started it around summer, and only now just had Rick reference that fall was coming up. My guess is (comic
they're saving the prison as the "cold weather" portion of the show, so they'll be indoors most of the time.
) Consistent snow too, not a storm that melts the next day. So yeah, Kirkman kinda goofed on that.
Oh, right. I read some of Walking Dead but forgot. I now remember something from what you mentioned under the spoiler tags. I wonder if they could actually do that on a TV show?
Is there any significance to the wandering zombie in the field? And what ever happened to the sign and supplies they left for Sophia? Sorta seems like something they'd want to recover and take down. No need to advertise the farm now that they know Sophia's dead.
Really, none of the plot holes from the show bothers me (magic invisible zombie fence around the farm, etc.).
I think we can chalk this up to "They occasionally get zombies, but it is one or two at a time, so why show it?" I don't know if they talked about this on the show or not but
once they start talking about herds of walkers, I'm sure a herd will hit the farm and they will have to move on
This is another one of those "They took down the sign, but we didn't feel the need to show them do it."
That sign they left for Sophia was probably found by this mysterious rogue group. That they saw some other group was squatting in the area and would be easy picking to attack for supplies. Next episode shows Daryl interrogating that kid, and I bet he says something like that. Then again, he was from the same school as Foxy Farmer's Daughter. So it could just be all the town rejects banned together into something like the DotD biker gang. Still...Hershel didn't recognize either of those guys from the bar. Wonder how the kid fell in with that group. Maybe that group is what will seque into the plot arch involving the Governor?
As for the zombies...the only movie where there was a constant threat from zombies was Romero's original NotLD. Pretty much every one since dealth with them fighting a few zombies, but primarily just fighting with eachother. So for the show to not have so much man vs. zombie action is technically adhering to the genre's formula.
Don't know if a herd will hit. I'm thinking it'll come to blows between Rick's group and the mystery group. And they'll maybe be outnumbered and just abandon the farm after too many attacks. Something has to happen where the farm doesn't feel safe, but from something other than walkers.
Oh, right. I read some of Walking Dead but forgot. I now remember something from what you mentioned under the spoiler tags. I wonder if they could actually do that on a TV show?
Oh yeah, they definitely could. They'd just build a fake location on a soundstage and then only have to find a real one to film the outdoor scenes all at once in a couple days. That's actually the kind of thing that makes me respect actors. That they can film something all out of order and maintain character throughout so many evolutions of the character.
I think the prison will still be there because it was an important part of the comics, but it'll be like the farm, just a place to have some of those events happen, but the more extreme ones rewritten to be cable friendly. It would probably be the entire next season if I had to guess. Or at least half of it, with AMC doing this split-season nonsense.
Great episode tonight. Not too many zombies, but I really enjoyed the character development, and every twist, for the most part, made sense.
-Carl's confrontation with the captive, then slamming Carol about Sophia's death and his encounter with the zombie made sense since he's been following the "Shane" school of zombie survival. He desperately wants to be grown up, but he's following the wrong role model.
-Daryl's badassery continues after a slight hiatus and his "mercy" kill at the end of the episode, and it's apparent he's lost his faith in the group after Andrea shot him in the head. But I still get the feeling that he's a good person, and beneficial for the group. Hopefully he gets more of a spotlight in further episodes.
-Herschel has dismounted from his high horse, which is what I would expect someone who has gone through what he has (the bar shootout, seeing how Glen feels about his daughter, etc.). In my mind he's become a truly likeable character. Despite his past flaws, he truly wants what's best for his remaining family, no matter what the cost. Sadly, I've never read the comics, but I feel that his days (alive, or with the group) are numbered, but I like him.
-Dale's "civilized" argument is both compelling and inefficient. "How are we better than those people that we're so afraid of?" He makes a point, but it's all about survival. I think the new split between Dale and Rick is intriguing. [edit, Dale is sort of dead now].
-Andrea's vote for Dale's plan of saving the prisoner is surprising, and I don't really understand her motivation. She's been all about Shane's methods. I guess the only explanation is that she's clearly forged a connection with Dale in the past, and it seems like the group is slowly ostracizing Shane.
-I thought that Rick wouldn't be able to kill the prisoner, but Carl's appearance at the potential "execution" easliy stayed his hand. I think it's disturbing that Carl takes after Shane instead of his real father.
-NOOOOOOOO DALE! I know he had his rib cage torn open, but was he actually turning? Maybe it doesn't matter, but DAMN that sucked.
Just wanted to say I watched this with a decent sized group, and during the final couple minutes, some of the more bloodlust-y fellows jumped up and cheered.

That would annoy the hell out of me.
I didn't even feel any significant emotions when Sophia was found and killed, but damn, this episode had me tearing up. The entire ending scene was just so damn crazy and brilliantly filmed.

[/RANT]
Thought it was a slow episode, but I realize it had to be as build up to the decision had to progress. Where the hell is Carl's mom? That damn kid is wandering off in the forest by himself??? Inconceivable. Everything that kid did pissed me off this episode. Glad to finally see that they actually do have livestock on the farm. Makes the idea of staying there a little more viable long term. OF course, we know they won't. Also, good to see other little details addressed like Darryl making more arrows.
Now to what should be concealed:
Dale was a goner. Getting ripped open like that with today's medecine would be a long shot, but in that setting with a vet and rudimentary equipment, the best they could do is put him out of his misery. I don't think I've actually seen that happen in a zombie movie, although I haven't really watched that many. Was he actually pushing his head toward the gun barrel at the end? At first he seemed to be scared of it, but it seemed like in the final shot of him he was asking for it to be done by leaning into the barrel. Kinda hard to tell from the angle. Would be nice if they didn't headshot him so we could see if he would turn without a bite. Darryl was just padding his stats. Thought it was good that Darryl took the gun and not Shane. The Dale cam looking up at Darryl was intense.
The way everyone has acted on the farm recently wandering off alone has been ridiculous (as some on here have complained about), but maybe that was the point. Show they feel too safe and then the suffer for it eventually. It's usually not the first time you do something wrong that you pay, but eventually you will. To be fair though, if a zombie eviscerates a cow and leaves it mostly and still alive and Dale stumbles upon the cow, how the hell did he walk past a zombie in the open field without seeing it? There were no trees, just grass. Did the zombie lay down for a little nap in high grass?
Also, in a seperate spoiler which may not be a big deal now, but still really could be so I wanted to seperate it as it has to do with outside real world knowledge of the industry and not storyline. Again it COULD be a big spoiler although not specific:
A month or so back IGN had an article with the headline that a casting for a main character on another show may mean that a major character from Walking Dead would die. Was it Dale? I don't know cause I didn't want to find out that way, I want to see it in the show.
Pretty good episode tonight, although I am still confused as to why they cant just drive the kid in a direction push him out and leave. They seem to leave the damn farm every other episode so I dont know why its a big deal all of a sudden.
Also,
Dale? What the man. He was 1 of 3 people who wasnt balls out annoying and easily forgettable. Kill shitty T-dawg or that bitch whos kid died. Now that her kid is gone there is no reason to have her at all.
Also wished they would have linked carl to the zed in some way, so they he knew he had let him in. And again, I dont get the magically zed barrier. So there was never a point in which zeds couldnt just walk into the camp yet they seem to have never addressed the need to protect it in anyway.

Regarding your first spoiler:
I'm pretty sure he was pushing his head towards the barrel because I noticed that too. I think that's the part that got to me. Him laying there with everyone around, Darryl grabbing the gun, Dale signifying that he wanted out, and then capping it off with a quiet "Sorry brother". Great sequence of events that ultimately led to the demise of one of my favorite characters.
They don't want to leave him somewhere because he may know where the farm is since he was a local and knew who Maggie and Herschel were. Might be a small town and they live a little more secluded than most, but it's possible he does know.
And. . .
As for the magical zed barrier, carl didn't let it in although he didn't kill it and unwittingly earned it it's freedom from the mud. It most likely got through the part of the fence that got broken down by some cattle which Herschel mentioned to Dale. Big hole for a walker to wander through. They just mention guard duty every now and then. I'd at least have the house better protected with the windows boarded up and maybe a protective fence around it, although farm life is busy enough to find time to fortify.

Yeah, they really couldn't drop him off anywhere and know for sure that he was truly "lost." I would have just cut both his legs off and gave him a golf bag cart to scoot around in. Then they can not have to worry about killing him, and know if he runs he won't get far.
Was shocked at the ending. Thought for sure
the cow was just caught up in some barbed wire and there'd be an ironic moment where Dale just mercy killed it without hesitating and then immediately end the episode. Dale made it a lot longer in the comics, so it's pretty clear the comics timeline and events are just a rough guide and nothing the show it going to follow closely if at all.
Was cool when he told Dale he knew Shane killed Otis because Shane said Otis stayed behind to cover him but Shane came back with Otis's gun. If I were in that group I'd say "Hey, Rick & Shane, you guys can be on laundry duty, I'd rather Daryl led the group."
How in the world do you guys think that a guy with 1 leg, who has been toured would hobble his way back to there camp?
They drove 30 miles last time, drive another 30 and push him out hell if you are that worried make sure there are some zeds around in the distance and push him out honk the horn and leave.

How did Rick survive the hospital, make it out, go through his town, make it to Atlanta, escape a massive horde... you get the idea.
wow 2 great episodes in a row only to be pissed away with this fake, forced bullshit of an episode.
Love how Dale is in a somewhat of a open field with nothing seemingly in sight hears and sees a wounded cow then like a typical cliche horror movie a Zombie magically pops up behind him likes ing Scorpion from mortal kombat with no sounds made whatsoever. The same zombie that developed pinpoint expert tracking skills that he somehow followed carl exactly back or close to the farm.
Speaking of Carl, wtf was with him this episode. Its like they had to intentionally make him as dumb as possible for the sake of the plot in this episode. Kid runs off over like 5 times with no supervision, sees a walker and instead of maybe running back to inform the others that there's a walker stuck somewhat close to the farm so they can handle it or if push comes to shove shoot him, what does he do? TEE HEE i throw rocks at you! cut to different scene then when we return to carl what do we see? He gets CLOSER to the ing walker, naturally who in the world didnt guess what would happen next. -facepalm- So now you think, ok time for him to shoot him. What happens? kid takes 2 hours to find a shot and drops the gun and has to run away -sigh- there goes a precious weapon and ammo.
Its Ironic that everyone was worried so much about Randall that Carl ends up indirectly killing someone

Pretty much. Solid episode and I love the fact Darryl is the perfect counter balance to Rick and Shane's bullshit, but for his sake I wish he'd ditch the group. It's crystal clear sooner than later they are going to get the poor guy killed. He's the only morally gray character they have that isn't a complete idiot or psychopath that has their best interest at heart. I guarantee you they will f*ck that up soon enough.
As for Randall...
killing him is the only viable option IMO and Dale's stance annoyed the hell out of me given the circumstances. He already told them he knew of Maggie, been tortured so he can't trust them and vice versa, admitted the group he ran with is a well armed threat and another drive n' ditch run at this point is a waste of resources and by no means a guaranteed death sentence.
If he beats the odds and finds his camp then they are screwed. If he doesn't and sticks around then he's an intelligent threat who could sabotage their best efforts to survive at his leisure. We all saw how he taunted and killed that walker last episode. Dude isn't as soft as he wants everyone to believe and he WILL do anything to stay live. Ugh... I'm hoping this backfires in a huge way next episode. Once again we're heading back into "Sophia search zZzZzZz" territory only this time it's actually mildly entertaining.
And yes...
there were plenty of options to choose from besides Dale. T-Dawg who had ZERO lines that whole episode and hasn't done ANYTHING worthwhile (I truly envy his actor - talk about a free paycheck), Sophia's mother who's equally useless at the moment and no one gives a shit about, Carl or Lori who were both complete morons the entire episode, etc. Shame he's gone but with any luck this will knock some sense into Andrea and curb that Shane inspired bitchiness because I'm personally sick of it. She doesn't run shit there and though checking Lori last episode was appropriate, the whole deal with Maggie's sister proves how both her and Shane haven't the slightest idea how far gone they are at the moment.

WATCH OUT! BIG F-ING SPOILER
WTF dude. Yeah, you spoiler tagged that, but people have been spoiling episode discussion. Should have marked it major spoiler or something.
I didn't like that they killed Dale. Like others said they could have killed T-dawg or what ever the hell his name is. I forgot all about him till they showed him int the episode. When they did show him I was surprised he was still alive. I could have sworn he was dead.
As for Shane I knew they killed him because I saw the episode name but I didn't how.

well if there was a button that said super spoiler i would have used that instead maybe you should know not to click something that says ing spoiler to begin with.
It is helpful to note when a spoiler isn't about the past episode that people are discussing though. Someone could easily assume it was just more spoilered info about the past episode rather than a future development since the post was vague about what was in the spoilers, and there where lots of posts about last night's episode with stuff in spoilers preceding it.

How about from here on out, if it has aired it is not a spoiler, and if you have not had the chance to watch the episode, you STAY OFF OF A DISCUSSION THREAD! That way all comic book related material and FUTURE episode content can be marked with spoilers.

Or people could just have the foresight to label the contents of a spoiler tag that isn't contributing to the current discussion as just that before they post it. We could do this all day really. Point is neither party is completely in the wrong here, but if you can't see the logic in dmaul's post then this discussion is hopeless. I, like many others, had assumed the spoiler had nothing to do with a future episode given the current flow of the conversation.
No one here is castrating the dude for posting it in the format he should have. Just suggesting people try to label their shit better for something that huge and generally unrelated to the current discussion. That's it.

I'd love that and advocated for it in past TV series threads (Lost, 24 etc.) but it didn't meet with much consensus unfortunately.
The majority preferred sticking with spoilers and having posters just make clear if spoilers were from the prior episode or something future related in the text outside spoilers.

I agree. Why are things that already happened spoilers?
Anyway, if that won't work, people should at least mark their spoilers as being from a recent episode or from an episode that hasn't aired yet.
It's perfectly believeable that the zombie, once free of the mud followed Carl's direction and then the fence line to the broken fence to the sound of cattle, etc. A little too perfect rather than wandering into other fields, maybe, but believeable enough.
As for Carl, as annoying as it is, kids can be stupid and then he doesn't want to get into trouble for stealing a gun, carrying a gun around, wandering into the forest, getting close to a zombie and losing a gun so he doesn't say anything. I get that part. And for a kid that young to pull the trigger and shoot a zombie that surprised him by working free when he appeared stuck and was grabbing at him would be much less believable than the end result that happened. It's bad enough for someone trained to stay calm and get the shot (of course, they wouldn't have gotten into that situation), but really hard for a kid's first kill.

There was a little mist, but moonlight as well. I complained of the ninja zombie right off the bat as well. Typical zombie fare. In the quiet field with nothing to hide behind the zombie makes no sound walking up to Dale whether it's his dragging feet through the high grass or moaning and hissing and he's right behind him when he turns around.
On the talking dead, the director said that the eviscerating was based on the idea that zombies have really bony fingers and sharp nails and that's how it happened. Bony fingers and still growing nails is new to me, but I'm no zombie expert.
They can't kill the little girls mom because it's too easy and clean. They can't kill T-dawgg because he's the token black guy and you have to save him for later. Speaking of which, I'd like to see the father and son that first found Rick reappear. The dad was awesome in Jericho and Human Target.
Also, someone mentioned the comics are no more an indication of the show anymore and I agree to a point. I get the feeling major occurences will still show up, maybe in slightly different ways leading up to them. From what you guys say, the jail couldn't really happen yet and the governor has been cast so maybe this other group is with the governor and after that comes the jail. Anyway, I think another comic book moment occurs in the finale and different than the books:
Carl kills someone, in this case Shane. In a preview clip in the talking dead Rick gives Carl a pistol and I bet Carl uses it to kill Shane. Can't decide if it will be a more innocent way like protecting his mom or dad when Shane snaps on them or something more sinister which has been alluded to and he does it out of spite when Shane chews him out for something and Carl just snaps.
Speaking of the comics, I haven't read a comic in years, what's the best way for me to start reading The Walking Dead? Are there compilations or what?
After watching last night's episode, for the love of god PUT CARL ON A ING LEASH! Or at least give the boy a few lashings to get him to fall into line. Ugggggh! Hate him so much.
He definitely does push his head against the gun at the end. They discussed shooting the scene with the director on talking dead.
They're not worried he hobbles back to camp, they're worried he gets back to his camp or his people find him and he shows them the way to their promised land.
I bought "Compendium One" From amazon for like $30. It is issues 1-48 (about half of what is out there). It is the first comic i have read... ever, and I am really enjoying it.

as far as the nails go i think its more about the skin receding back over time though i swear i read somewhere that after death your nails and hair continue to grow for a bit. but yeah that was alot of damage for one zombie to do alone i was expecting a few and more over why would it just leave the cow there ( unless they prefer people and once it heard him it went off to find him).
what pissed me off about the kid was that it seemed like they were going to do a halfass toss in to show how he was losing his fear of death from being exposed to it all the time ( like in the comic but done shitty and in less time). carls change in the comics is one of the best parts of the series and i dont see this kid pulling it off. who knows at this rate maybe he will die to.

I don't get the cow thing either, the biggest argument is they like to eat the living, but the cow was still alive.
As for the MAJOR (ie: future episode) spoiler from up above,
it looks like Shane bites it next week. He had that blood all over his face in the preview when he tells them all the prisoner escaped.
Seems to be the trend with series these days: have the whopper of a finale on the second to last episode and use the last one to tease the next season.
