Does eMule have tons of corrupt files like Kazaa? Does it have Spyware or Adware. Kazaalite worked well for a long time, but it's gone the way of WINMX now.
eMule doesn't have corrupt files OR misnamed files. It uses a hashing system with error-checking/recovery. So every part you download is checked, if it fails the check, it's either recovered or re-downloaded if recovery fails. Even if somebody misnames a file, it doesn't matter, because the hash is still the same for the file with the real name. I hated that about Kazaa, download an mp3, turns out it's just a zip file with crap in it.

eMule uses the eDonkey network. eMule is totally free and open-source with no ads whatsover (check the code yourself if you don't believe it). eDonkey software has ads and junk I believe, so not worth getting that one (I don't know why anybody would anyway, eMule does so much more and does it better).

Something to keep in mind about eMule is that you download faster the more you upload, so initial users probably have to leave the program running all night if they queue up a lot of stuff the first time. For finding rare files eMule is absolutely wonderful, for the more common stuff, it's comparable to the other p2p software I'd say.
whats wrong with winmx?
In my experience, WinMX is ungodly slow, and I've never been able to successfully download a single file with it. Maybe it's gotten better since I tried it out (back around 2000, 2001), but it doesn't inspire me to try it again. eMule and BitTorrent are good enough for me.

For those of you just starting out in AO and have no clue where to start (pretty much where I was a few days ago) check out those stickied links. It does a good job of at least introducing the game and the different character classes. And do everyone a favor and make sure to at least make an attempt to read the manual. The server is full of people asking questions when they could have found the answer themselves by reading the manual for 5 minutes. It's almost like no one wants to actually play the game and discover stuff which is the....point of an MMORPG?

1 minor detail fumcon left out though... what about the skill hot keys and the engineer's commands to his robot pet? i could not find either in the manual.
Simple skills like flingshot and burst would be nice to know...

I'm finally done downloading the whole game AND the updates. I don't see how to actually start and PLAY the game?! On the log in page there is only these options: PATCH, DELETE NAME, ACCOUNT SETTINGS and CANCEL. WHERE'S PLAY???

On the pulldown menu, it says: Rimor Server (Needs Patch)

But I dont' need the patch anymore, it's all downloaded...HELP!

Just log in and it will begin patching. If you thought that waiting for the patches to download took a long time, wait until you actually install them!

When it says it needs patch, and you have already downloaded one, patch it again until it does not giv eyou that message.
What it does is patch one version upgrade into your game, YOu might need to download a few of them to get you up to the current version number. Watch the patch and match the number you have with the current version to see when you have succesfully updated your game.

try typing /help and you should be able to go through those menus to find your hotkey assignments or questions answered.
Every action has a hot key or you can bind it or macro it , But im not sure how. :p I always put my fling shot etc. on my hot bar and used it that way. Try dragging and dropping hte icons in the action menu to your hotbar.
As for engie, creat your shell and drag and drop it onto your hotbar and you will only need to click it to summon your bot.
For all the pet classes (meta, engie, beaurocrat, you can rename your pets by typing
/pet rename insertpetnamehere
or if you want a space in your pet's name...
/pet rename "insert pet name here"
I cant remember the color codes to make your pet''s letters differnt colors im sure its on google somewhere.
The hardest part of the game is understanding the mission terminals and getting to know your way around.
Im sure the old timers are sick of newbs asking about every little thing they could have looked up, but they are just upset. They had a solid community that helped each other and were for the most part very adult without the bnet kids. They will still help you if you use the general chat channel or the newbie channel. AO as a whole was the most helpful mmorpg comunity I have ever seen.
(dont know about after this free thing though ;P )

It did take forever to download a MILLION patches (it seemed that many) They are all DL now, but it still says I NEED PATCH! I have no idea how to patch it manually, now that I have them all DL. Any help there?

Try /pet help or /help .
I cant remember all the commands, ut a few of them
The bes tone for a new pet class is /pet guard. He will attack anything you attack or hits you. Alwasy try to put him on this when you first summon them, although i think its on by default i always dso it just to make sure.
/pet follow
/pet attack
/pet status or /pet location i cant remember :p
/pet terminate
/pet rename insertpetnamehere, or /pet rename "insert pet name here"

Those are all the main ones i can think of atm, and the ones youll need. There are many more. These commands work for all pet classes.

You can make macros that combien all functions like renaming and comands into one button, but i have forgotten how to do that . the macros in this game can be huge and extensive and you can almost do anything you can imagine.

For all pet classes, your pet will not level up with you, you must by upgrade nanos from the shops or find them in loot drops. The more expensive the pet the higher the level, and the quality is kind of like a level base to judge what you should have. You start with a quality 1 so try to upgrade your pet as much as you can to make it stronger. Once you learn the nano, you should delete your old one just so you dont confuse which one is the one you want.
You can buy the new nanos in the basic stores in the cities, ask around in general or newbie chat to find out where they are. In rome blue the basic is north east on the second floor. Rome green is south west i belive. Rome blue and green are mirror images of each other so what is one place on one side will be the exact opposite in the other. Clanners i have no idea where your basic is sorry. Nanos are sold in the back room, and engies will have a cog above their specific terminal. Meta wil have a star i think, and beauracrat will have.......i forgot, cause i never play Crat sorry but check each terminal and eventually youll find your job's machine.

The guy who posted about the nano/spell thing was correct.
Nanos=spells . Buy or find the crystals and right click them to learn them and once you learn them you can cast them anytime.
Dont worry about implants now cause you wont need them. They are just a way to improve your basic skills (replaceable permanent buffs) and to be able to overequip your gear. Once you get the hang of the game then look into implants

I have never patched it manually : ( is there a readme or instructions on the website or in the zip?
if you have more then one patch you will need to apply them in order by version number so that lowest starts first.
I alwasy started up the game and had the game upgrade itself thorugh the auto patch.
Sorry im not mutch help there

The game won't start up for me. What button do you push on the webpage to start the game? When I start the game all I see is the UPDATE button...

WinMX is decent. Sometimes for rare files you have to wait a long time though. It's mostly just good for the more popular files, not having ads/banners/adware and most importanly, being able to control your upload speeds.
