Now that I finished watching, I can give you some answers.
This was like a Cliff Notes version of Death Note with some pages taken out and re-written for their own narrative. Some of it works while other changes do not.
And you stopped at a good time; the deaths themselves are something I would expect from the Final Destination movies. For a mainstream audience who doesn't want to take the time to read or watch the series, they would probably like it. But going by the source material, it's very disappointing. I felt like Homer Simpson in that one Simpsons episode where he's chasing down the roast yelling "It's still good, it's still good" before accepting it's not. When it was all over, I felt it was okay at best.
The acting, however, was fine. The cast is good given the material they had to work with. I wonder if people liked one particular change:
