Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Black Clover has been getting better. Caught up with the dub last night and I'm glad I stuck with it. The dub version of Asta is growing on me and he's becoming quite likable. His harem is getting bigger. I think we got 5 girls if I'm not mistaken. And the intro is finally good.

 
Question. While I continue to wait for a sale on something like ace of diamond or major to appear again from comixology . What other sites or stores would you recommend to check out the Manga or anime. I think someone here mentioned a while that a anime was released. From what you all mentioned earlier, it sounds interesting and would like to check out a possible trial service if available?

Since the comic thread is inactive or pretty much dead. Has anyone got to read any of DC crisis series (for example infinite crisis, final crisis , or some others I'm not familiar with) or convergence? It's pretty cheap right now and thought about getting it while it's on sale, but I'm not too familiar with the series or even the order they go in.

All I found so far are opinions from reddit lol.

I watch all of my streamed anime on Crunchyroll (free member) and Amazon Prime. I like Amz for viewing on TV and not having a delay before the next episode is released. CR has a larger selection, but free members have to wait a week for new content. That's usually no big deal, but you do occasionally need to dodge spoilers on more popular shows.

There's a number of other sites as well, but I have no experience with them.
 
Finally sat down and watched episode 17 and 18 of Darling in the Franxx. A couple quick thoughts with episode spoilers.

Episode 17
"What's your explanation for THIS (childbirth book), Code 556?"
"What's my explanation? F uck You. THAT'S my explanation."
I can neither confirm nor deny that I actually said that response at my PC during the commercial break.
Episode 18
Yep, I'm doubling down on that explanation I gave in episode 17.

Also, are we sure that Ichigo isn't actually the main character in this show? She's the leader of the team, and now her personal love triangle has developed into some sort of Love Rhombus. A rhombus that will likely leave her alone because of her own (in)actions. That's classic lead role material.
 
Came back from my friend's wedding in NY and was greeted with a gigantic Lupin sign at the airport.

Ok, it was for "Lupin Pharmaceuticals" but it was a pleasant sight to see anyway.

On the flight I started watching Netflix's version of Death Note and stopped where Ryuk appeared.

It's not bad so far, but it is ... different. From the negative reviews, I was expecting something bad like the reboot of Total Recall. 

 
What's with the anime this past season? Soooooooooo many re-cap episodes and delays. I think this is the 3rd or 4th re-cap for Beatless this last episode. DitF had it's 2nd "special". FMP had a very early re-cap episode. I think there were more but I'm forgetting. Is the anime industry over there imploding?

From what I have heard the anime industry is weird, and in general all shows get around the same budget per ep. So if you don't have as good of talent on the project then it's more likely to run into issues as you can't really hire more people to fix it.

We are also having more anime than ever made per season which is stretching the talent out, and the pay increases haven't been much so it's almost a min wage job to animate anime at this point.

When Light started freaking out and screaming like a pussy I was like "hmmmmm ... nope" and shut it off. Why do a crappy imitation when people can just watch the anime? And why has Rurouni Kenshin been the only good anime to movie adaptation? The just don't work.

I didn't watch FMA. These action anime turned into movies always look so cheesy. I guess Kenshin pulled it off because it didn't rely on CG and Japan at least knows how to make samurai flicks.

 
The nice thing about recap episodes is that they let free members like me catch up to current time faster. The bad thing is that since I'll skip the recap episode, I still have to wait two weeks like everyone else for the episode after that.

Amanchu S2 started off nicely....but the last 3-4 episodes have been gaaaaaaaaaaaaaarbage. If I don't get another normal episode of DitF this weekend I'll be irritated. Anyone watching FMP? This arc is so dark....or I'm forgetting how dark the show really was? Last episode surprised me, but man I love this show. Also, MHA's episode was great...past few have been quite good. This show has really ramped up compared to when it first started and was cookie-cutter. Black Clover is also doing nicely. I like it when shows finally start to hit their stride!

Now that I finished watching, I can give you some answers.

This was like a Cliff Notes version of Death Note with some pages taken out and re-written for their own narrative. Some of it works while other changes do not.

And you stopped at a good time; the deaths themselves are something I would expect from the Final Destination movies. For a mainstream audience who doesn't want to take the time to read or watch the series, they would probably like it. But going by the source material, it's very disappointing. I felt like Homer Simpson in that one Simpsons episode where he's chasing down the roast yelling "It's still good, it's still good" before accepting it's not. When it was all over, I felt it was okay at best.

The acting, however, was fine. The cast is good given the material they had to work with. I wonder if people liked one particular change:
omitting Mello and Near

Has anyone seen the Japanese live action Death Note movies?

Thanks for the run down. I guess I'll just l leave it alone. If I were to say one thing I did like it was Defoe as the voice of Ryuk. Very fitting.

I have the Japanese live action on DVD but it's been 10 years since I saw them. I liked them, but again the anime is much better. If I ever wanted to experience Death Note again or even recommend it to someone that's were I would go. It's one show were by episode one you are hooked.

I haven't picked up this new season of Amachu yet. I've been on the fence since I just "mildly" liked the first season.

Are you watching Black Clover sub or dub? I'm doing dub so I'm a couple episodes behind the sub but I'm enjoying it very much. The animation has a lot to be desired but It's a been a fun shonen to chill to. I like the pace and things seem to be happening.

My daughter started watching Naruto now that she's all caught up with One Piece. It reminds me that I really liked the first part. She's almost done with Zabuza and I can't wait till the Chunnin exam arc. That Lee vs Gaara fight is some of the best stuff ever.

Sub for Black Clover. I'm too lazy to watch the dub lol. Yeah, Naruto is great up until it goes into the horrific non-canon shit. Same with the sequel, pretty good as long as you can skip the garbage made-up episodes.

 
Tokyo Ghoul re: has kind of been a cluster fuck of a show. It's all kind of pointless as I look back at the episodes I've watched. It's reinforcing why I disliked the original series. Keep hoping for something interesting but nope.

The 4-koma is much better. I couldn't get into the anime. It includes adaptations from the manga but also some super random weird shit exclusive to the anime.

 
Turns out DBZ Kai ends next week and Pop Team Epic airs the following week. The commercial aired and yeah ... looks bad.

Picked up Shiki since it was recommended by the Steals and Deals thread. Funimation will lose the license next month.

My Hero Academia is still good. All Might reminds me of a toned down Bobobo.

Meanwhile, FLCL: Progressive awaits me on the DVR.

I am curious how the toonami crowd is going to react to getting the same 12 minute episode twice over with just different voice work.

After you watch and love Shiki you should look into Ghost Hunt and Twelve Kingdoms. They don't really have the same feel, but they are all from the same author and she's great :)

 
Man...so many seasons are ending with huge loose ends and are completely open-ended. It's really bizarre. That being said, I think without a doubt Hinamatsuri is my favorite show of the season. I really hope we get another season. I think Megalobox is my distant second. A whole bunch are tied for 3rd.

Rest are follow-on seasons. Of the follow-ons, I think MHA is the most improved. Went from what felt like a lame cookie-cutter show, to something with substance. FMP is probably my next favorite follow-on season with Card Captor Sakura being right behind. Black Clover is finally starting to have some depth to it and is becoming something I look forward to watching.

July comes soon with some big new seasons of Overlord and AoT! Other upcoming shows look like garbage on a quick scan, but curious if anyone knows of something else worth watching during the summer months?

 
A few series while I wait for the current season to finish (I don't start a series until it's done airing, BNHA being the current exception):

Girls' Last Tour - Excellent! It's tragic yet still somehow a sol series. I'm too afraid to turn to the manga to read the rest of the story... I heard it gets increasingly grim ;_;
Masamune-kun no Revenge - An ok watch. The main characters have some personality flaws that make them hard to like. I look forward to the second season airing in July.
Sakura Quest - Pretty good. Good setting, ok cast, decent character progression. Not the most interesting of stories, but worth a watch if you want something laid back.
Soul Eater Not - This could have been good given the greatness of Soul Eater's setting, but this is barely passable. Not much story, little to no character progression, and unnecessary fan service. Skip this and just rewatch the original Soul Eater.

I have 2 episodes of Hinamatsuri left. I'm going to finish it up tonight probably.

This seasons favs are:

Golden Kamuy - I love the time setting. Post Russo - Japanese war set in Hokido with native Japanese Ainu people. It really throws you into the setting and culture of the Ainu. I love these time piece shows. I wasn't a big fan of the art. Kinda plain and lazy for a gritty story. I did appreciate the humor. Asiripa is the best. I'm all for strong young female leads. It's awesome that she's Sugimotot's anchor and without her he would have been dead several times already.

Megalobox, Food Porn, Yowapeda, SAO GGO, Gundam Build Drivers, and Lupin Part 5 have all been a joy to watch.

So I'm relying on you guys to give me good recommendations for the Summer season. Don't let me down,

Glad someone else enjoyed this. I agree, it was a little slow at times and not the most exciting story. But it's charming and a good laid back chill show. The mayor is my favorite character. Just a ruff and gruff softy. All bark, no bait.

Yep, this season's wrapping up this week. I think tonight will be my wrap up night with Golden Kamuy, Hinamatsuri,  MHA. and Yowapeda if I can get through all four.

I think Food Wars wrapped up this season last Sunday so I'm done with that.

I think Crossing Time finished. I was waiting till it to get done with then binge everything in a night. I mean each episode is only like 3 minutes long. Didn't make much sense to watch it week to week. I could finish the entire season in 30-40 minutes.

 
I'm falling behind again like usual, but I did at least watch up to episode 21 of Darling tonight.  Episode 21...

Just watched the latest episode of Darling in the Franxx.....can I just say how much I LOL'd at the end?

Really, Zero Two turning the machine into her? That was so lame/dumb. You can't talk in space....her body would explode....why do they do stupid things like this in anime >.< Fortunately we get another episode to tie it all up.

 
I've never seen Madoka, so that reference is lost on me :( I did see the last episode of the GGO spin-off tho, have to say I really enjoyed that show! Nothing amazing, but very enjoyable. Worthy of a side-story!

 
Watched Pop Team Epic Episode 1.

Ummmm .... well the video game references were funny. Everything else was too random and forced that I decided to turn it off during "Round 2".  It felt like I was watching a lazy version of Excel Saga mixed with everything I hated in Shin Chan.

What should I be watching this season CAG?

I will be returning too: AoT, Overlord, Gintama, One Piece, Persona 5, Black Clover, MHA & Stiens Gate and I will definitely check out the Kaiji spin-off and new FLCL

Besides that I'm unfamiliar with all the new shows.

Is Hanebado that badminton anime we saw a preview of awhile back, or is it a different one?

Cells at Work sounds interesting, and High Score Girl being set in 1991 and initially involving SFII is enough for me to give it an episode or two.
