I'm going to be in Rochester NY for a couple days over the weekend. Are there any good gaming stores in the area? I would like to go to stores that sell stuff like Genesis or Dreamcast games. I would appreciate it if anyone can give me some tips.

There are no good places to do ANYTHING in Rochester NY...I went there once and it was like a barren wasteland of a city.

rochester...if im not mistaken, thats near the pallisades mall...HUGE mall like..2 ebgames i think..might get lucky with the dreamcast games..i THINK..and umm...this is def out of ur way, but if u can find a way 2 get into danbury or trumbull CT, theres a place called SHAKESPEARES, that specializes in like vintage games

Rochester and Palisades......not so close. Give or take 5 hours away. Shakespears is a nice little store but they overcharge waaaay too much. For example, a used Saturn with RF cables and Bug Too! was $80. I pass on this store now.

Yeah...Rochester is REAL far from there. I'm about a half hour from Palisades and 45 from danbury, but 6 hours from Rochester.

Is anyone familiar with the HO/RC Entertainment Exchange up there? Is this store worth going to? Also Game Blast, Game On, Game Station? I saw these all listed in the yellow pages.
Thanks.

Right off the new york thruway take exit 490 (or 390, can't remember, it's the one you pass by twice. If you're going toward canada it's the first one, second one if going toward MA) and then it's the first exit (victor I believe). The highway starts on the thruway, goes up to rochester, and ends back at the thruway. They have the nicest mall I've ever seen. Not so much store wise or anything, but the main entrance was amazing for a mall. Though, if you drive around the areas south of rochester, you'll find a lot of little villages with shopping and stuff. Kinda quant and interesting if you like that sort of stuff.

Though someone described rochester as a wasteland, I've always heard it was taking away people and jobs from buffalo. I only actually went through rochester once and it looked like a normall small city. Buffalo is the ghost town, you hate it at first but then it starts to develop an unexplicable charm.

Also, if I remember the name correctly, gamestation had a store in northern buffalo on delaware ave. It wasn't opened the last few times I went, can't remember if they were moving or renovating. But they're a good place for games, they buy everything and have a lot of older stuff. Got a few hard to find things that I've never seen before (like the megaman game gear game for 15 bucks, which I've seen go between 30 and 80 on ebay).

House of Guitars! its the store that ate your brain, doncha know. (is that even still open? its been a decade since i lived up in Rochester)

I love Rochester. Buffalo is the wasteland - a wasteland with promise and pride, but mostly a wasteland. Yes, Roch-cha-cha has its problems, as do must upstate NY cities, but it is much more cosmopolitan than my current home.

The villages of the Genesee valley are very picturesque, especially Geneseo (plug for ye olde alma mater), but not much there for the average gamer. If you do go to Geneseo, you must stop at Buzzo's music and Sundance Books on Main Street. Hippie heaven, and Buzzo is quite a character. Just hope he isn't outside playing one of his instruments in his bathrobe on a windy day. Eat a sub at Aunt Cookies.

Rochester's malls are nice, but they don't have anything more than the typical mall store chains. The mall mentioned in a previous post sounds to me like the Irondequoit mall, which is quite fancy. Or was, at least. Been a while since I've been. The city used to have some good used game stores, but the two I frequented have since closed - the yellow pages would be your best bet. I think there may still be one on Monroe Avenue.

If you are into pen and paper RPGs, CCGS, or wargames, you may want to google search and mapquest Boldo's Armory (right off the 490 Monroe Avenue exit) and Millenium Games in Henrietta (West Henrietta Road), which is also by the Marketplace Mall. And a big pr0n store. I prefer Boldo's, as it is more of your typical, small, but decently stocked store that feels, well, geek homey. Millenium is a mega store, with great characters present, but kind of big and impersonal - plus, it took over the location from my beloved Crazy Egor's Discount Game Warehouse, and it pains me to go in there. Nothing personal to the inhabitants - it's a great store, but it just doesn't feel like my old geek heaven anymore.

If you like music, House of Guitars is indeed still there, with a great selection of everything from vinyl to CD's, in every genre, and a giant plexiglass case that, if I recall correctly, is two stories tall, circular, and filled with guitars autographed by actual rock and roll gods. The place is a must-stop for most bands that hit the area.

For drinking, hit Monroe Avenue. Good times. I forget the name- The Toad and something, I think - is an authentic English style pub is one of my Rochesterfarian friend's favorite hangouts.

The one thing you MUST do is get whomever you are visiting to take you to Nick Tahou's at 320 W. Main - not far from Boldo's. There, you will sample the gastronomical delight that is the Garbage Plate. It looks like hell, but tastes soooo good, and is cheap too. Go hungry. But not if you are a vegetarian. thats where i live and work. Eastview Mall. The entrance is like the Taj Mahal. As for gaming places around rochester, i would recommend looking up a "Game Craze" in the phonebook. They have lots of older stuff at really good prices. I have even found nintendo power gloves there. lots of sega games too.
