My girlfriend and I recently bought RISK after having recommended by a couple of our friends and after playing it a few times we think we are doing something wrong? About how long do the games take when you guys play (and how many players)? When my girllfriend and I played with her sister we played for almost six hours and the game STILL wasn't over! We all just kept replenishing our troops each turn and getting the same territories over again. Does a "typical" game of RISK take this long?

depends on the skill of those involved. my dad bests me in like an hour tops. but him and his friends used to play forever. one of his friends actually won after being reduced to only great britain.

Yeah it can take forever, so you have to be playing with a griup of people that will want to stick with it. With four people I once had a game go something like a total of 14 or 15 hours.

Cool. We thought that we were doing something wrong because the game just wouldn't end. I guess it must be pretty common with this game.

Wow... what a coincidence. I just played Risk for the first time with a bunch of my friends (in a 6 player game) tonight. I also got reduced to just Great Britain, but my comeback was cut short when half the people had to leave. We played for about 2 hours, from what my friends said a game usually lasts a lot longer than that.

Are you using the cards correctly?

Those are intended to speed a game along. The more cards that get handed in the more armies that become distributed. So I think the first set gets 4 and the next 6 and then 10 and so on and so on..eventually someone gets like 40 or 50 and starts to wipe you out. The cards can totally change the game.

Read the manual again. It shouldnt be 6 hours. Maybe 2-3 tops. I can play a 6 player in under 2 hours with good players.

thats how my dads friend won. he got a set and got like 50 armies, using the normal rules (long game). he then systematically took over the world. sameas every other night

narf.

yea risk games do last a long....long time. i remember playing it way back with my bros... it would usually resort to fights and arguements and v wouldnt finish barely any of the games v started. make sure to read the rules carefully though cause they can b a bit confusing.

and ofcourse if the game is getting too long u can always make up ur own rules. :)

As far as i know we were using the cards correctly. During the five hours of play we had barely reached the 30 army mark. We followed the rules pretty closely and it was a loooong game.

umm..that doesnt sound right that you had 30 armies in 5 hours...from the cards

every time a set is handed in the armies increase...

you get a card for taking over at least 1 territory

The first set of cards turned in = 4 extra armies

The second set of cards turned in = 6 extra armies

The third set of cards turned in = 8 extra armies

The fourth set of cards turned in = 10 extra armies

The fifth set of cards turned in = 12 extra armies

The sixth set of cards turned in = 15 extra armies

After that, each additional set exchanged for armies is worth 5 additional armies; the seventh set, for example, gains a player 20 armies; the eighth,25 armies.

"First" and "second" set, etc., refer to sets turned in by anyone during a game. The player turning in the third set in the game would get 8 armies even if it were his first set.

so thats at least 27 rounds to get to 30 armies...hmm

Plus you get your armies for owning territories and countries.

oh well...does anyone want to come over to Multimedia and play some Risk?

Ive been meaning to play a game of Risk forever, but am never able to get enough people to do it for long enough. Anyone know if the $10 Risk 2 PC game I see at Wal Mart all of the time is any good?

There are two rules you can play with with the cards: "fixed" and "ascending." Fixed works like this:

3 soldiers = 4 battalions
3 cavalry = 6 battalions
3 cannon = 8 battalions
1 of each = 10 battalions
3 wildcards = 12 battalions (or you can substitute one wildcard for any other type of card, eg 2 soldiers and a wildcard is 4 battalions)

Ascending works like this:

-First person to get 3 of one type or one of each gets 4 battalions.

-Second person to get 3 of one type or one of each gets 6.

-Third gets 8

-Etc.

Ascending makes the game go much faster.

Are you playing with the mission card? I have found the game only takes about 2 hours with the mission cards.

Oh man, does anyone watch the Undergrads? Or have the DVD? I'd tell you what I'm thinking but only those who have seen it will understand...

when they rattle out how to play is great. Its so quick and fluid you know they have been asked that question about a million times

When my friend s and me play risk it takes us 10-18hrs to play. We have some added rules we play with;
1) No cards, but we use cards to pick our territories
2) Barbarians (they start out with 3 armies on 6 territories and gain an army at the end of every full turn. When they have 6 armies they can attack. They only attack if they roll a six (a player rolls for the Barbarians for each territory). If a 6 is rolled for the barbarian’s territory then they will attack an adjoining territory until the adjoining territories armies are dead or the barbarians are down to less then 6 armies on the territory.
3) Flee, you don’t have to fight you can take your armies to an adjoining territory that you own.
4) Nuclear Risk with silos

Personally, Risk has too much luck involved for my taste. You get a bad run of dice and a defending country with 5 armies can take out 15+ attacking armies.

Chess is my game.

If you think that Risk is too much of a luck game then try Axis and Allies. Its rather involved and that game takes HOURS to play..sometimes days.

I have had 4 player weekends in that game.

got a question about risk...
on 2player passive neutral game,do you assign all of the neutral armies evenly (i belive 4 per territory) or 1 at a time, anywhere you like?

and

in the 2player passive neutral game do both players alternatly assign armies until all 36 armies are gone?

also,on the first turn after the board is set up do you start by recieving reinforcements then placing reinforcements then combat?

thanks in advance

risk games in college would normally last one bottle of booze per player, so yes the games were usually long and very violent.

here is a secret, irkutsk and yakutsk are the key to world domination.

I love Risk, too bad my family will no longer play becuase I dominate them. Anyway, our games with about 4-6 players would last about 2.5 to 4 hours. It does seem a bit strange that your's is taking so long. But if you are both on the same level and indecisive then I could see it going on that long. Also I do not recommend playing with anything less than 3 players with 4 and beyond being ideal.
Is the PS2 Risk any good in the first place?
Don't bother with the PS2 game, Risk II for the PC is easily the best video game version of Risk around. It's actually pretty easy to find in Jewel Case form or in a bundle.

There is no such thing as luck! Probability rules all! It's all about knowing how many dice to throw and when. I'm not really that good, but I did once come back from only controlling Australia to win the game. ...fightin' 'round the world!
