Anybody got a Sony Ericsson W810i?

I got one, what exactly do u need to kno about it??

I'm too tired to post more about it, but I do recommend it as a good phone.

the one I have is the import btw, not the cingular branded version.

I paid like $150 for mine... but your may most likely be branded since it's from cingular,

the major differences being cingular logos all over the thing

as well as the far right button being replaced by a shortcut button the cingular's store
 
I have one from Cingular. Awesome phone all around.

PRO
-Awesome battery life. (I could go 4 days with normal MP3 and phone usage.)
-Good MP3 player.
-Good reception (depend on area though)
-Nice screen.
-2.0MP camera w/ auto-focus and light(works like any other Sony digital camera)
-Nice interface/menus.

CON
-Low earpiece volume (some people complain about it. Mine is fine IMO)
-Cingular removed MP3 ringtones (you can "debrand" the phone on your PC for $10 and add that functionality back in.)


I recommend checking out the Sony-Ericsson section of www.howardforums.com . The w810i is definately the most popular Sony Ericsson phone at the moment, so you'll find a lot of info.

Got one, returned it less then 5 days later.

I thought it was a pile of trash. Everything about it requires a proprietary connection. Lose one of the cables, prepare to pay big bucks. It's advertised as a walkman, but requires a dongle to input the headphones.

The 2 mega pixel camera looks like crap, granted it is a phone, but 2 mega pixels I expected much better.

I thought navigation sucked for using it as a phone and musc, but that probably is just me not used to it after only 5 days.

Overall, I didn't like the phone, wasn't worth it, and did not want to keep it. Got a crappy RAZR (unlocked) instead because it does plain phone calls very well and I like the clamshell design better anyway. I wanted an iPod replacement when I got the Sony, but it was not even close. I'll stick with my iPod and PSP for portable audio until a suitable replacement all-in-one is available.

Nope. Unlocking just allows you to use it on other networks besides Cingular.

Debranding is more like reverting it to the official sony Ericsson firmware instead of using Cingular's crippled firmware.
 
regarding what b3bops said, I don;t kno much about all the connections he speaks of... unless you need it for some specific function. The package already comes with the usb cable, as well as the mentioned dongle for earphones + earphones.

in terms of camera quality, all the pics in my flickr were taken w/ the phone so check those out. As previously mentioned, it does have auto-focus as well as a light which also acts as a flash of sorts. In addition, macro and night-time settings help make your pictures come out good. One actual issue about the camera is there is no cover for the lens! It is exposed as opposed to other phones like the w800, s700, or k800

and in regards to navigation, it's the same as in damn near every SE phone. The unbranded cingular ones do offer a shortcut button in addition to setting up shortcuts on your directional buttons, so navigation isn't an issue if u set your macros up right. In terms of the mp3 player, it's either about how you put your files onto your mem stick or if the actual files are organized by genres/artist/album etc. You can also create playlists.

The phone does have a great battery life, but it is meant to be an mp3 player, a feature which I have yet to really extensively use. I recently whipped out my headphones dongle in hopes to finally test it out soon (and Ive had this thing since september!). So... I really dont kno how the battery measures up when you're listening to full albums on the road. The mp3 player also does not allow u to fast forward / rewind songs (I dont think it does...)

Also, one thing that was the most dissappointing, the transfer rate. It was dog slow. My W810i came with a 1 GB memory stick and it felt like an eternity to put some music on it. I found out by doing some searching that the internal transfer rate is much slower then USB. My iPod and PSP can transfer a song in seconds, this takes multiple minutes.

The phone was not terrible, but I was severely dissppointed for it's cost and advertised feature set.

When I mention the cables, I mean they are all proprietary. You can't use just a plain old headphone in to the phone, you have to use the dongle. Also, the USB cable is proprietary, so if you damage/lose the USB cable you can only replace it through whoever sells the accessories for this phone and it's expensive (you can't just go to staples and buy a new USB cable for cheap).

About the navigation, like I said, I probably didn't have it long enough to learn and get used to it. It was very minor gripe.

Those are my beefs with the phone. It was a cool phone, but since I was so dissappointed with the transfer rate and all the shitty cables, I returned it and got a crummier (and cheaper) razr until a true all-in-one solution is available.

just my thoughts, others may not be bothered by them.
 
I'm def. getting this phone. $75 with my plan and by the time I can get it, it should be free.
 
I have a w800i as well, in fact my contract with cingular JUST expired at the end of december.

It was a great phone, but my minor gripe was using an adaptor to plug headphones into it... and having to use THEIR headphones to listen to the radio (since they were the antenna). I loved that it came with a 512MB memory stick, otherwise im sure i never would have bought myself one. MP3 ringtones are hilarious, and personally I thought the pictures were more than passable (considering it was my only camera for a long time). I'm moving on to bigger and better things (read: waiting for iphone in June), but if anyone wants my w800i, i might let it go for a reasonable offer. I bought it unlocked, nearly mint (screen plastic still on), only had it since last christmas, all original packaging, etc.
 
oh i don't blame you. can't argue with cell phone contract subsidies! but if anyone else is looking for an unlocked w800i that may already have a contract is in the market... well, then they know where to look.

You have a good point about the transfer rates being really bad using the USB cable. However, if you just pull out the memory stick and use a Memory Stick reader it's really quick!

It's too bad you didn't like the phone though. :( Personally, I can't stand anything Motorola after using my SE. Just a matter of opinion, I suppose.
