Are there any retro games similar to Contra and Metal Slug?

Are there any modern games like them?

I don't know about modern ones, but I came into this thread ready to post these and nobody is going to stop me :)

Cowboys of Moo Mesa
Sunset Riders
Dinosaurs for Hire

Hmm I only know about classic ones like Gunners Heaven for Japanese PS1, Gunstar Heroes for Genesis, and Gunstar Super Heroes for GBA.

You could maybe try the Red Star for PS2? Isn't that game Shadow Complex for Wii a shooter? I don't know much aboit modern stuff.

That game was awesome. I would love a remake or sequels.

1) Alien Hominid HD is the most recent homage to Contra. It's on PS2, Gamecube and XBLA. You can play the original version here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/59593
but the console releases are very polished in comparison.

2) If you haven't played Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis or XBLA, that should be your first purchase!

3) Alien Soldier, also by Treasure, is another winner. Gunstar Heroes is known for it's creative and challenging boss battles. Alien Soldier is essentially a nonstop volley of intense GH-style bosses.

Just to add more wood to the flame, Gunstar Heroes is amazing. It's amazingly cheap, too. I also found it far less frustrating than contra, but still had a solid challenge.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably try out Gunstar Heroes- I'm almost 100% sure it's on the Virtual Console.

The Japanese import of Gradius 2 for the 8-bit Nintendo may be a space shooter, but it surely does have that Contra 'feel' with borrowed sound effects and bad-ass bosses. Be warned it is an incredibly difficult game. Both are made by Konami.

Find a Dreamcast console and burn a Nintendo emulator with roms for yourself. You may as well play some Contra and Super C while you're at it!

If you're a true red-blooded gamer, you should already have a Dreamcast.

- Shadow Complex is like a mix between Contra and Super Metroid for XBLA. I highly recommend it.
- The Red Star is like those games, but with more of a Double Dragon perspective -- as in planed 2D. Very good game, though my buddy and I couldn't beat a boss very deep in.
- Might be redundant, but for 2D gaming, nothing beats the GBA and DS Castlevania games.
- The DL-redux of Bionic Commando is along those lines as well.
- Alien Soldier is a Treasure Mega Drive/Genesis shooter that runs about $200 in Japan, but is on Wii's Virtual Console.
- Timeslip is a little-known shooter for SNES that's Contra-esque and fetches a very low price on eBay.

I really enjoyed GunSmoke for the NES. It was developed by Capcom and could be pretty punishing at times, but overall, it was great.
