Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who last season became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to a Super Bowl title, was badly injured in a motorcycle crash Monday morning and set for surgery.

Roethlisberger, 24, was in serious but stable condition in an operating room, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital. Jones spoke before going into surgery, The Associated Press reported.


Pretty stupid to not wear a helmet. Didnt he learn anything from Jay Williams?

EDIT: I'd feel bad for the dude, all sports biases aside, if he wasn't a walking tribute to Darwinism in action by not wearing a helmet.
 
You have it all, and you throw it away. This after Kevin Winslow Jr does much the same thing for the Browns. You have to wonder here, will he ever be the same. This guy had a shot to be one of the best, to challenge some records, be a Hall of Famer. Now, it's all up in the air.

If he manages to be the same, and have no long term effects outside this year, hopefully he learned something.
 
Who the crap doesn't wear a helmet? Morons, that's who. My boyfriend's team is the Steelers, but still, I think it's stupid when people don't wear helmets. I'm glad my father does when he goes out on his motorcycle.

He was always so fucking smug about the fact that he rode a motorcycle despite the risk factor and the previous injuries incurred by other sports stars.

It was only a matter of time till he fucked himself up.
 
Didn't like Terry Bradshaw or somebody like that say this would probably happen unless he stopped riding a motorcycle? Anyhow I hope he makes a full recovery, I'm not to big on the Steelers but it'd be a shame to have someone of his talent be forced out of the sport at under 25 years old even if he did bring it down on himself a little.

Its more than that. Broken jaw, lost most of his teeth, broken sinus cavity, 9 inch cut on the back of his head, and serious injuries to both knees.
 
Well, a broken jaw does not sound like SERIOUS condition....isn't serious right before critical (which is almost death)

Maybe he can play with a wired jaw

I'd wear a helmet on a Harley, but never on a Huffy.

Also, there are more injuries than I mentioned, but I can't remember them all. Those should be the most serious.

Truth be told, he could have broken his jaw wearing a helmet, unless it had a full face cover. While I'm tempted to do the same, don't let your hatred for the Steelers interfere with facts.
 
I think the "serious injuries to both knees" report will matter much more to his playing career than a broken jaw (Didn't Manning play like 8 games with a broken jaw once anyhow?) or lost teeth. Wonder what the extent of the knee injuries are?
 
I'm not letting my hate of the Steelers get involved I just find it amusing that he came out and talked all that crap about riding without a helmet and now he has an accident that the helmet would have helped in.

The bigger story in all of this is that ESPN is a part of the huge cover up.... This was not a accident this was a poor mans mob style hit, the air freshener gave it away.. Check the unedited pics:

Like I said in the NFL thread, I hate Pittsburgh, but I hope Roethlisberger comes out of this okay. Pro athletes should not be allowed to ride motorcycles.

They typically aren't. Most professional athletes have a clause which permits them for engaging in risky activities and motorcycle riding is often named specifically. What a dumbass. I hope he recovers but I don't give a shit if his career is over - what a dumbass... and to not even wear a helmet... there's isn't even a word to describe that level of... dumbassity.
 
Football is the worst sport to have a injury like this in as the team can just release you and not pay. If I was paid so much money to play a sport, I would make sure that nothing like this would ever happen to me. I hope Ben ia alright, but let this be a warning to other athletes.

The season before last, Jason Witten broke his jaw in a game, but kept playing. He then was out for a week and came back the following week.

If that is Ben's worst injury, it doesn't sound that bad.

There's also reports that he messed his knees up pretty good. That could be a career ender.

I found this on one of the Pittsburgh media sites. I am a huge Steelers fan and have been tring to keep up with him pretty close.

It's interesting that they decided to add a link to an interview they did with Ben last year about his motorcycle riding to the news article.

ESPN: It's not the law in Pennsylvania to wear a helmet. Why don't you wear a helmet?
Roethlisberger: Because you don't have to. It's not the law. If it was the law, I'd definitely have one on every time I rode. But it's the law and I know I don't have to and your just more free when you're out there with no helmet on.

ESPN: How much do you view riding a motorcycle as a risk?
Roethlisberger: I think it can be a risk. It depends on how you ride. I don't ride a sport bike. If I'm riding a sport bike and trying to do tricks, and going 200 miles down the highway, that's probably pretty stupid. But when you're riding a Harley or a chopper and you're riding with a group of people and you're not on the highway and you're cruising, you're relaxing. I don't think its as much of a risk as people make it out to be.

Benny Boy, just because you aren't driving dangerously doesn't mean everyone else isn't. Foolish and irresponsible is all I have to say.
 
It's like Kellen Winslow Jr. all over again. But a year or two later and off a super bowl win. Yet i don't see ESPN all over the place calling him a dumbass ... YET. Maybe they are waiting for him to get to stable condition before they tear him a new one. Who does Pittsburg have at number 2. Charlie Batch?
 
you guys are putting way too much faith into a helmet. What really needs to be addressed are the amount of drivers on the road who don't pay attention to people on motorcycles and contribute to the wrecks. People in cars treat people in motorcycles like crap and don't understand what has to be done to maintain driving safely on a motorcycle.

My father has known too many people who have died on motorcycles and most were wearing helmets and practicing safe driving.
 
It was right down the road from me, on the 10 ST. bridge. What seems to have happened was that the woman driving pulled a "Pittsburgh Left." For those that don't know, Pittsburgh has very few left turn arrows and even when they do people still pull a Pittsburgh left to beat the light. I've never seen it anywhere else in the country but the basics are that as soon as the light turns green, the person in the oncoming lane across from you guns it to cut in front of the oncoming traffic so they don't have to wait for another opening. Generally, people from here give the folks in the oncoming lane a few seconds before they gas it when the light turns green for just such an occasion. Apparently Ben didn't as his 20ft long skid mark on the road can attest.
 
My local radio station was talking about this while I was driving home from work. After the lady hit him, his head hit into the windshield, then he smacked into the pavement.

Really sad...the guy on the radio station was saying, "I dont agree with laws that MAKE you do something, but when you're being paid millions of dollars a year to stay in shape and be safe, don't ride w/o a helmet."

But then some guys were calling in saying how even with a helmet things can get ugly. Add this to the fact the lady was at fault here.

Interesting. I never knew that. We dont exactly have that here, but we have a few areas that are lacking in left turn signals.
 
Riding a motorcycle is way more dangerous than a bicycle. A helmet isn't a 100% effective protection but it is better than nothing at all. Even if he is a safe rider it still isn't worth the risk.

They are going to have to put that woman in some kind of protective custody when her identity comes out.
 
I'm a Cleveland Browns fan and I hate the Steelers with a passion- but I dont want this sort of thing to happen anyone.

Still, Ben should have learned from Winslow, Jr.
