Best Buy YMMV Thread

mikeshinobi

CAGiversary!
Can we have a thread where we share deals we find at our local Best Buys? Of course they're always YMMV but it would give us ideas of what to look out for.

I have two local best buys and each of them had different deals:

Best Buy #1:

  • Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW): $15.99
Best Buy #2:

  • Disgaea 4 (NSW): $15.99
  • Dead Cells (NSW): $10.99
  • Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS): $12.99 (didn't get this, very sad)
  • Some other 3DS title I was extremely sad I missed out on (3DS): $10.99
There were some others but these were the ones that stood out the most that I can remember.

Also for anyone who doesn't know, if your Best Buy has a price placard out for a game but they're sold out, you can ask an employee to order it for you from their website and they will match their in-store price! Of course they have to have stock on the website though.

Skull and Bones - “requires Xbox subscription and internet”

What a piece

Yeah, of course Ubisoft takes forever to develop this and then requires both the PS5 and Xbox versions to require online to play -- even the single player mode. This game became the butt of so many jokes for how long it took, and then IMHO doomed itself when it required online to play at all.

Sold out real fast. Might have only been an hour or so. Not really my cup of tea though so I'm okay with it.

Sold out immediately?

I noticed a trend with these Best Buy ten day deals. Anything popular sells out way too fast, you have to be awake at 2am to buy the game. It isn’t even available the next morning, such as now at 8am. A normal time of the day. I can see a product selling it throughout the day, not as it launches overnight.

Well, like someone said, there's probably only a certain amount allocated for the sale. I was able to get Sonic Superstars later in the morning.

I got Fenix Rising back during one of the past sales where it was $10 or $15. The demo was somewhat fun though the puzzle aspect felt weak. I hated the whole narration aspect of it and how things could be changed up as the narrator corrected himself as that pulled me 100% out of the world/story/character ... but the exploration aspect was enough to grab it on the cheap even though it was another ubisoft game where some content was going to get locked to a gold/season pass type thing that I 100% was never going to buy.

IMO, it's no where near Breath of the Wild... but it it seemed like a good gap filler between playing more serious big games like BotW or after say finishing a massive RPG like one of the Xenoblade Chronicles titles.

I mean sure, I just found it funny that it was just PS4 and Xbox. The PS4 version is $8 on Amazon right now. They really couldn't have done switch and PS5 too? Not a knock on the game itself.

Yeah, they probably should have done those platforms too. For what it's worth they had the Switch version on sale for $10 about a month ago in mid-July. Not sure about PS5 since I don't have it.

So it’s basically a Ubisoft sale with some extremely low-inventory games from other publishers peppered in. Doesn’t get lamer than that.

Would’ve totally picked up Fist of the North Star boxing as fitness games on switch are a lot of fun on rest days, but it was literally sold out within ten minutes of the discount going live. I doubt there were even 100 copies available.

I think for most of these sales it's to eliminate local store and region stocks. If there's not a store within your designated area with it an the regional supply location is drained, then it'll show sold out. So it might have only been a couple copies in your area. I've seen this happen many times in past sales where someone says it's out of stock at BB but I go check and it's in stock for me.

Well that makes a lot of sense, because it’s definitely weird that this random fitness game with mid reviews and based on an extremely niche IP would’ve sold out so fast.

Makes sense when you see they’re selling for $30 on eBay and trade in for profit at GameStop

My Sonic Superstars Switch seems to be stuck in shipping hell. Was supposed to arrive yesterday but still says it hasn’t even arrived at the shipper.

I was about to say the deal was a scam. I was up at 3am and it was ‘unavailable’ Still a scam to me. That isn’t a reasonable time for someone to be up or for something to sell out. Because I guarantee tomorrow it’ll be back in stock at full price.
Sales go live at 1am EST.

You say everything is a scam. Limited edition controllers are a scam. Money is a scam because you can't take it with you when you die, making it pointless to work for a living. It's your favorite word, like a certain presidential candidate's "fake news".

agreed. It’s intentional.

Nothing is ‘limited’. They can choose to make more. Now if a vineyard grew X amount of grapes, then they can say “limited edition of 100 bottles of this wine”. That’s the truth. An Astro bot controller can be infinitely produced.

Same goes for this sale. No reasonable personal is up at 1am to buy a $10 game. the sale should be all day. If tomorrow GT7 is back in stock for full price, then how is it not a scam?

Yeah, perhaps they limit the amount of items for these promotions but to be honest it's their right to do so. If you want to declare it lame or cheap in your view then fine, but I don't think scam is really the right word. No love lost here for Best Buy as I have heavily criticized them in the past for certain things, in particular for their scummy membership practices, but having said that -- as far as I am concerned these deals are kosher even if they sell out too quickly.

There are things that are called time zones and alarm clock.

Exactly. You snooze, you lose. The early bird gets the worm. Take your pick of idioms. If you aren't willing to make the effort and others beat you to it... well that's on you for your part. There's nothing stopping you from taking a minute or two other than your own choices.

Maybe they only want to sell a certain amount of their excess inventory at the $10 price. That’s not really a scam. I got 3 of them at like 2am.

Fitness boxing is still sold out after it sold out a few days ago within an hour
