What do you mean by packing peanuts? How did they scorn you?
You know the foam peanuts placed in many packages? I often save a few to put in the envelopes. I will place one or two in a package to thicken it up at one spot since it doesn't need to be uniformly thick.
As for the scorning, I have had a couple of postal workers to tell me that the package had to meet the thickness requirement for the DC...they asked me to thicken the package so the person on the receiving end wouldn't incur any additional charges (although, I have never had anyone report having to pay any charges on their end for packages that I forgot to thicken). Two workers refused to mail it as is and I had to thicken it up before they would accept it. I had one lady to open a package for me (with my permission), add some paper to thicken it, reseal it, then accept it for mailing. You could simply place the packages in the collection bins without going to a postal worker, but since the post office lost a rather expensive package of mine last year, I ask to have every package scanned in for proof that it was left at the post office.
