I'm in the process of buying a friend's used PS2. I'm looking for some advice on what games to start hunting for? My list currently looks like:

Devil May Cry
Ico
Max Payne
Dark Cloud 1/2
Metal Gear Solid stuff
SoCom 1 (or 2? which is better?)
Ratchet games
Jak 1/2
Sly 1/2
Red Faction
Dynasty Warriors stuff

In the stuff that I'm getting from him is: FFX, FFX2, GTAVC, and a bunch of other stuff I'll almost certainly be selling/trading (Madden 3,4,5, ATV OffRoad, GranTur 3, SSX3, Spy Hunter, Soul Calibur 2 (have it on GC)).

So what else is good? What should I keep an eye out for? What is your top 10 list? thanks

If you never owned a Playstation 1 I recomend getting the PSX FF games, including the NES/SNES remakes (Chronicles, Anthology, Origins), along with Castlevania: SotN (It can be found at most Blockbusters).

Definatly get one of the Dynasty warriors, I love those damn things. Oh and definatley get GTA double pack or at least Vice city, really cheap now and my favorite games.

I'd definitely recommend:

Silent Hill 2 Greatest Hits edition - contains the same extras found in the Xbox port that appeared after the original PS2 release, this game features great music, atmosphere, and incredible storytelling. Characters are very well developed and the plot is thickly layered with ambiguity that will keep your mind busy thinking about it for a long time after you are done with the game.

Ace Combat 4 - or wait until 5 comes out. Best arcade style flight sim for PS2 out there.

Tenchu 3 - MGS style gameplay set in feudal Japan, if stealth is your thing, you'll love it.

I agree with the Silent Hill 2, to no end.

Guilty Gear (The newest should be coming out very soon, so look into it)

Onimusha series has rocked my socks since the beginning.

Amplitude.. easy pick for the musicians or stoners.

And all these games should be easy to find at your local pawn-shop for about $5-10. Have fun.

You seem to like 3D platformers more than anything else. I'm sure FFX wouldn't be a good choice for you. Many people that try an RPG for the first time and pick FFX end up disliking it for the most part. I'm a big RPG fan and teir are better. If ya wanna pick an RPG get Arc the Lad or wait for Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Also look into survival horror games like Silent Hill. SH 4 just came out.

Yeah, buy some RPG's. I really liked Shadow Hearts, FFX (and X2) and Disgaea. Also, Jak 2 is really cool. Mark of Kri is a deal for $5. Make sure to get GTA. Hope you like PS2

i'd recommend prince of persia. sands of time is cheap now or else the sequel is coming out in a couple of months.
Shinobi! the tate system is awsome.
I could not agree more. Get Shinobi. You can get it for less than $20 now and it rocks.

.....oh... and... pay no attention to my Shinobi sig...

You must get Kingdom Hearts. GTA: SA is soon all you'll need, also get POP, the sequel is coming out in a month too in case you like the first. POP's an awesome game and can be found for less then 20.

You all are listing the same titles over and over again. I just pre-ordered a PStwo and could also use a thread like this to reference. FFX, GTA, etc. are no-brainers, like recommending Mario or Zelda for the Cube. I want to hear lesser known recommendations; that is, games that aren't super mainstream but are true gems. I hear that Katamari Damacy is fun and not everyone has heard of that one, so I thought that was a good recommendation.

With that said

Zone of Enders 1 and 2
Ace Combat 4
Shinobi
Nightshade
Parappa the Rapper 2
Draken
Legacy of Kain Defiance
Gungrave
XGRA

Mark of Kri is definitely worth the $7 bucks used. It's a nice looking game and plays pretty good. A warning though - it's short and while the levels look huge they are very linear. A sequel is coming out in early 2005, I'm definitely gonna pick it up when the price drops.

Rez is a fun no-brain shooter. something to waste your time.
Maximo is good.

Tenchu was alright. The fighting system was totally lacking but the length of the game and the stealth kills were great to watch even for the 100th time. A prequel is coming out - I think either late 2004/early 2005. But supposedly the graphics are only a slight improvement from Wrath of Heaven and there will be no Rikimaru.

Can't think of too many "buried treasure/ true gems" that aren't already talked about in most game magazines. For the last week I've seen Katamari Damacy on websites and in magazines, while the general public might not know about it, anyone who reads gaming news has probably heard of it. So best bet is to just visit and read reviews from a gaming site.

Keep those lists coming! So far, I have Disgaea (thanks Nachzeher & Dracula), Nightshade (it was either that or Shinobi, Nachzeher ), WipEout Fusion (thanks D_M), KOF 00/01, and Mad Maestro coming in the mail. I think I've covered quite a wide range of genres for when my PStwo arrives. :D
Is ICO really that good? A lot of people seem to be recommending it.
