Best Square or Enix or Square Enix game thats not a Final Fantasy?
It makes me weep for humanity that Vagrant Story has been mentioned but twice. The game is perfect in practically every regard.
It's true. The story and gameplay are amazing.

I am not sure I played the same Vagrant Story as you did. Not to start a flame war but VS is one of the most flawed RPG that I have ever played. There is a reason that Square never used the same game engine for any other game. If you go just by story and atmosphere it is awesome.

I'm curious, what didn't you like about the combat system?

Chrono Trigger.

IMO it's not better than the real Final Fantasy games of that era through 10, but it is just as good, which means I'd buy a system for it.

And I did...I bought my X-Box 360 solely on the strength of Final Fantasy 6-10 and Chrono Trigger.

Sure since you asked; First the weapon building and constant changing of weapons vs type of enemy. Not that big of a deal normally but no easy way to change weapons and the system is dependent on weapon changes. It takes a good 20 - 30 seconds+ to change weapons and and you change weapons constantly.
Second, the combo system vs bosses. This was annoying on many levels.
Third, the save system.
Fourth, the map system and every room looking the same.
Fifth, the flow difficulty goes from hard, easy back to hard with no flow.
I have a few more issues with the game but it has been many years since I played it.

I agree with you about the weapon changing. It was pain to go into a room, find 3 enemy types, and have to constantly change back and forth. That is my one complaint with the game.
 does anyone else other than me even enjoy Eihgrez and Bouncer?

also to throw my hat in again: Tobal 1 and 2
I enjoy "The Bouncer" but "Eihgrez" is a "Power Stone" ripoff.
I havent beaten Chrono Trigger though. It was kinda hard at the end.
Uhh... it's really freakin' easy. The game does not require any level grinding at all. I can't see how it was hard considering I beat this game several times when I was just a kid.

When you were free to roam, i went inside the castle and got beaten down hard.
Uhh... it's really freakin' easy. The game does not require any level grinding at all. I can't see how it was hard considering I beat this game several times when I was just a kid.
Final Fantasy XII...i mean, damn!

non-rpg: Tobal or Einhander

non-ff rpg: Chrono Trigger, dur

Chrono Trigger, which is actually my favorite Square game of all-time.

As for Enix stuff created prior to joining Square, that goes to ActRaiser.
