Best Wrestling Game on the N64?

I agree, No Mercy. WCW/nWo Revenge brought some great multiplayer and minor character editing, and WrestleMania 2000 brought a huge roster and more match types, but No Mercy pulled it all together. The story mode is great; the gameplay is awesome; and multiplayer rules. Still hasn't been decisively owned by any game since -- as great as I thought SvR 2006 was.

Honestly, I thought they all sucked. If you had to choose one though I'd probably go with no mercy as I thought it sucked the least. Don't mean to be an ass but I didn't care for any of them.

Ass. ;) What wrestling games in general do you think don't suck?

I hate wrestling, but my friends and I used to have tons of fun playing the WCW vs. NWO games all night long in middle school. The graphics sucked but the gameplay was basic enough so everyone could jump right into it and start going to town with some 4-player mayhem.

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 is the best one for a realistic wrestling experience, while No Mercy offers more features than any other Aki engine game. I don't find the gameplay slow compared to the stuff of today, it's just got a more realistic pace all around.

The AKI developed games. They are all good. There like 4 us games and a couple of japanese ones. They all use the same engine. The last couple US games were the best imo, No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000.

They graphics arent much to write home about, but the 3D gameplay still stands up. I think these games still play better than any of the Smackdown games on the PS2. The supposedly 'slow' gameplay perfectly mimics the pacing of a bigtime main event wrestling match. Wrestlers will grab an injured body part and sell it. They will lay on the mat for a looong time. They wont take your finisher and pop back up like nothing happened, like you see in some games.

With the possible exception of King of Colosseum 2, I think these old AKI games are the best 3D wrestling games ever made. And the best part is you can pick up any one of them for like $5 or less. The Japanese games may run you a bit more.

I remember playing NWO/WCW Revenge and diggin it in college, then Wrestlemania 2000 came out, same engine, and liked it too.. Is No Mercy the same engine as these two?

I have every wrestling game for N64, and I have to say hands down No Mercy is the best by far. Attitude was too hard because you had to do these 12 button combos in 2 seconds, and all the other games graphics sucked. No Mercy is garbage by today's games, but by far the best for 64. I also reccomend getting a Gameshark and having fun with hacking new arenas and things like that.

No Mercy has some severe slowdown problems, especially with the music on.

There was also a few other things I found annoying about the game, like how superheavy weight wrestlers are at an extreme disadvantage and how the entrances were cut short so the *awesome* titantrons could fit on the cart. It's not a bad game by any means, but it was defintely dissapointing. You might just be content with Wrestlemania 2000 or Virtual Pro Wrestling 1 or 2 if you want to import.

No Mercy vote again.

However, I can't believe how poorly that game aged. I remember having SOO much fun playing that, Wrestlemania 2000, and WCW vs nWo. But man, having played it recently.....man that game SUCKS in this day and age. I was really surprised because alot of games hold up but man...

WCW/NWO Revenge is the best wrestling game ever. I remember spending like $70 on that game, but playing 3 or 4 players for hours on end.

A couple of friends and I rented the first WCW/nWo game around the time when it first came out... which was almost 10 years ago.
Anyway, it was a whim rental and yet we played it for hours. I went out and bought it and put a sickening amount of time into it.

And then came Revenge.

I think it's the best wrestling game ever, but then again I've played very few wresting games.

I think the graphics have aged poorly, but the gameplay is still spot on and better than any wrestling game for the PS2.

I agree. The AKI engine and stuff still works, but the gameplay is just sooooooooooooo slow. With 4-players? Man. I'm surprised the game didn't just shut down every time.

I loved the create a wrestler on it, I used up every slot to make up some ECW characters, and WCW characters like sting and DDP, and had some good old WCW vs. WWF vs. ECW action.

Perfect Dark and Goldeneye dont hold up either, and used to be regarded as the best FPS ever(even after ps2 had been released)

WCW NWO Revenge was tops for me. My Wrestlemania 2000 has issues with just spontaneously erasing my saves, and it always has.

Akiman + Chavo Guerro Tornado Tag matches in Revenge Own your soul!

any aki game

i agree about hating the fact that they cut off entrances in no mercy.. that sucked ass....but the gameplay was tweaked even further

i guess wrestlemania 2000 would be the choice

Wrestlemania 2000 for the Story mode, that and the game was hard sometimes and i liked the challenge.

It always seemed that any Mick Foley character was hard to beat.

See. I disagree. Half-way. I don't think Perfect Dark held up as well as Goldeneye as well for me. I'm not sure why. I think it's because Goldeneye had such a nostalgia factor going for it while PD doesn't have it as much. Both great games, but if you ask me which I would rather play, GE.

I agree. No Mercy had ladders and the weapons stayed put when you dropped them, but that all came at the price of tremendous slowdown, especially in tag matches. 4 man ladder matches are almost unplayable due to the slowdown.

But WM2000 had the longer entrances, and no slowdown. So to me its the best game in the series, although many prefer the more feature filled No Mercy.

I hear alot of people saying the games are 'slow'. Well there is slowdown in NM, but in WM and the WCW versions of the game, I feel the pace is dead on with real pro wrestling. I like that that the guys stay down on the mat for 30 seconds at a time late in a match. That reflects what happens in a real wrestling match. To me the smackdown games on PS2 where the guys jump back up 6 seconds after taking your finisher are unrealistic. Thats too arcadey for me. I always thought of the AKI games as a pro wrestling 'simulator'.

yea i swear that nomercy was great. had a few match additions and they added the running grapple to match smackdown.. the game would of been perfect if it werent for the speed. ( the speed is perfectly fine for me though in one on one matches)... the graphics were also a little more realistic.

wm2000 was incredible.. no slowdown.. full entrances,

wcw was great.. no entrance music and season sucked but still great game. i wasnt a big fan of the cartoony look but this was definitely a case of gameplay over graphics... plus the intro was awesome and long.
plus the intro was awesome and long.
Heck yeah! When I bought it again a few months back, I watched the amazing intro and it was still as cool as it was back in the day.

People who haven't played Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 will say No Mercy. Those who have, will say VPW2.

It's pretty much the same game, but VPW2 is the Japanese verqsion. It has deeper gameplay, more moves, and better presentation (although slightly worse graphics).

Not to say No Mercy is bad though, far from it. If you don't want to hassle with getting import-ready, then go with No Mercy.

I do love WCW/NWO World Tour & Revenge, but they don't hold up quite as well. Gotta love the fictional characters in the WCW games though....and the fact that Bischoff's running elbow annoyed the shit out of me.

I have VPW 2 (bought it mint in Japan for under $10), but I'd still prefer No Mercy. Guys I know better and stories I can understand put it over the edge. In all fairness, I haven't played too much VPW 2.

That's kind of the same reason I prefer VPW2 - I'm familiar with WWF/E...which makes it weird to see all these long-gone (or dead) wrestlers in my game. That's purely a personal thing though - if you want to play as the Rock and The Undertaker, obviously go with No Mercy.

On the other end, VPW2's gameplay has a little more to it, but if you don't like wrestling from that side of the world, any benefits may be negated by the "who the hell is that?" factor...outside of Vader and one of the Kamalas, anyway.

I loved VP2 just as much as the American games. But for me it was always a question of getting my friends to play, and they preferred the US guys they knew from Monday nights. No one wanted to test my mighty Hashimoto! lol

I dont post here often but after seeing this thread.....

No Mercy Period

Best Create a Wrestler
Best Multiplayer
Its the best paced wrestling game New ones are too fast or too slow
Really Good Single player
Multiple story line routes

There are only two problems with it
-many have bad batteries so it might delete your stuff at any time (not that a gameshark cant fix this ^^
-slowdown if there is 4 charcters on screen (nothing thats not playable tho)

bread's done
