Black Friday / Cyber Monday 2024

Really contemplated getting a Switch. First Nintendo console I've skipped entirely. At this point, concluded it just makes sense to wait for Switch 2 (or whatever the Big N calls it).

Makes sense. Half the best games are Wii U titles and might as well wait to see if the next is fully backwards compatible.

There it is.

see that's what I mean. The digital Xbox feels. That's where we're all headed with the all-digital future.

You go that route and then people buy less. much less. plain and simple. Singular source means the deals are few and far-between, and not great.
Yep, and I knew it going in because I had for years snubbed digital for this exact reason. Now I just don't want the clutter and our local GS actually closed down which was extremely shocking TBH. The area is going through a boomtown renovation and we're getting a ton of higher quality stores/restaurants, but GS apparently didn't make the cut lol (probably meant their lease was increasing and was no longer solvent). Suffice to say, it would be even more cumbersome to go half an hour out of the way to do trade-ins now so screw it.

I have no problem waiting for games to come down in price a year or two after release now since I'm being slammed with stuff to play on Game Pass. Zombies DLC drops today and looks sick, plus Indy this weekend. FML.

Pretty sure Dollar General had Xbox credit 20% off from Thanksgiving through last Saturday. But it sounds like you got more bang for your buck otherwise, so probably not too big a loss.
Dollar General has to be a mythical beast because wherever I've lived we only ever have Dollar Tree around. I do see one on the map now but I'd have to go out of my way, at which point gas eats the savings. RIP.

I was in the same boat but pulled the trigger in 2019. I always thought that I had no interest in the "kiddie" Nintendo exclusives outside of the Zelda games. I actually ended up using it a lot more than I expected mainly due to its portability. After my PS4/5, it is my second-most used console/handheld. It was great for Indie games and smaller AA stuff typically only found on Steam. I also ended up really enjoying the Fire Emblem games.

In 2024, I think it makes sense to wait for the Switch 2 if you want to experience those Nintendo exclusives. However, if you are mainly getting it for the portability aspect and/or own a lot of Steam games then it might make sense to get a Steam Deck instead. I have found more value in the Steam Deck compared to the Switch as the ecosystem will migrate forward with each iteration (saved games are freely held in the cloud, free online play, games optimized for the Deck, etc). The Deck can emulate a lot of older consoles as a bonus too if that is your thing.

The funny thing is, places that do have a few of them have them fucking everywhere. Just like we have Dollar Trees everywhere.

Only thing I'm still waiting on from Black Friday is my copy of Gran Blue Fantasy Relink (PS5) from Amazon. It appears they ran out of copies, so now I'm just in limbo.

Will see what happens. The demo to that one was really fun.

I went in one to get some gamestop credit. They only except cash for gift card purchases. Never seen that before. I had to go bank since I don't carry cash anymore. Also, any high transaction will shut the register down. If not for the 15 percent, I would never set foot in one of them.

Most places will flag you if you're trying to buy a high transaction of gift cards, mostly due to how scammers target the elderly into buying gift cards for them. It's unfortunate but I'm glad they do it to safeguard against that kind of scam.

Got my copy of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom today from Woot. It's the UAE version, which I guess doesn't really matter but can slightly reduce resale value if anyone cares.

I specifically don’t buy games from woot since they only sell fake games/knock offs. Same with five below.

I thought it was a solid BF for physical games. Here's my final physical haul except a preowned Astro Bot which is still in transit. Pretty happy with my fake games from woot. Remaining games are preowned from GS and the controllers were BBY & QVC.
Nice haul. I see you have a few GameStop generic artworks in there. Do you put any effort into putting in better artwork?

Yes. I will exchange instore over time when when i find a preowned copy with artwork. Elden Ring and RE4 should be relatively easy to find. P5T will be more difficult. I had to return / reorder :ps4: P5T because they sent me a vanilla P5 disc at first. But that's the nature of GS roulette. On the positive side, I landed unexpected stuff like a preowned SMTV steelbook & preowned Akiba's Trip LE contents.

I almost prefer the UAE version, because it doesn't have the ESRB on the front and the cover art can really shine. So for a game like Echoes of Wisdom, I'll take the lower price as that's literally the only difference.
True, it does look nicer than ESRB. It's the nicest non-ESRB region you could get

Hey to each their own. I only collect NA/US editions. No pal, EU, etc.
IMHO, prices notwithstanding, the biggest reason to expand beyond NA releases is that EU/Asia get releases the U.S. never sees -- or in some instances, get better versions, too. Monster Hunter Stories got only a physical release overseas on Switch whereas the U.S. only gets a digital release. Life is Strange 2 in Japan on PS4 has all the episodes on the disc whereas the U.S. one requires episode downloads.

You're right there. I do own a small collection of Japanese games, particularly neo geo pocket color, vita, and just one PS5 game. Earth defense force 6, which I picked up in Hiroshima from my recent travels in Japan.

As far as normal everyday collecting though, I do stay away from PAL releases.

I get that. I do get the North American release whenever possible, also for collecting sake.

PEGI PAL ratings in ones collection are an assault on the eyes. Same with centered text on spine.

UAE copies are at least clean looking / same spine.

Meh. Doesn't bother me, especially when the PAL versions are significantly less than the other regional versions. I buy to play, not to stare at font/text alignments.

Not to be conspiracy theorist, but does anyone think that retailers goof the stock system so they don't sell as many copies as they actually have to save them from taking too many losses on sales?

I see some games that say "No store within 250 miles has this in stock" and I'm sorry but there's no chance in hell this is true for some of the games I've seen over the years. And also over the years I've noticed that coincidentally after games on sale "sell out" they always happen to pop back in stock the day the sale ends and the price goes back up to the normal price.

Forgot to reply to this weeks ago. Yes, it's true. And yet I have no idea why stores do this anymore.

My local best buy is notorious for this. The PS5 game section is miniscule now, maybe about 50 slots for games. Every time I visit, maybe half have games stocked. Meanwhile I check online and my local store shows numerous games in stock.

I don't like to order online for pick up if I don't have to, always been a 'window shopper' and buy random things. Recently wanted to go buy a game, Sea of Stars on PS5. bestbuy.com said several copies in stock. I drive there, cannot find it, not even a shelf location. I ask an employee, they check the SKU, and it's in 'warehouse'. How in the hell does anyone walk into a store to buy an item if they're location is in the back stockroom?!?

Best buy long ago decided it was better to lose a sale than to lose product and locked up a lot of easily stolen items. Now they are basically fulfilment warehouses for online orders with a front end for pick ups and a store front for more high end items that people want to see first. The days of browsing games is mostly over unfortunately.

Oh yeah if the discount is significant enough… agreed

But when it’s a few bucks eh
Or in some cases it's the only one available. Though that's uncommon. I have tales of Eternia psp as an example since it was eu/jpn only. Still weird that ubisoft localized that.

I believe this happened to me last year. The amount capped off at like $750 and it ended up giving the register problems. Ultimately I had to initiate a charge back after back and forth with the manager. That time I ended up paying the rest cash. This year, I ended up buying $500 each on 3 separate days, all the same location. I paid with my credit card, no issues. So cash only is YMMV on location.
It was actually their register system blocking my specific card because my bank had no record of blocking payments. And I know it was system wide because I had gone to another location after having cards not activate after hitting whatever limit they considered might be fraudulent.

Both of my Woot games arrived and honestly the cover of Echoes of Wisdom does look pretty nice not having that stupid rating in the corner.

My last game comes in today from Amazon.

Amazon also has the latest side scrolling Prince of Persia and Sonic Frontiers for under $20. I figure I'd grab a copy of each at this point.
