Califonia pizza sucks!

I was in San Diego a while back and could not get a decent slice of pizza. We went to a half dozen places and everyone sucked. I told a friend and he said that it's the water they use to make the dough. west and east coast water are very different. He also said you can't get a decent bagel out there either. I was wondering if there might be some truth to this. Anyone got an opinion?
 
I live in ohio and we have a local new york and local chicago style pizza places around. I have been to cali and the pizza does suck I went for 3 weeks and ate about 5 or 6 different places and the pizza is horrible.
 
I live in Cali and have had a few slices of pizza from Mom n Pop places in Manhattan (sorry if i misspelled). There arent very many differences. NY pizza tends to come in huge slices. i think NY pizza has less cheese and more crust. But i dont live in San Diego i live in the Bay Area.

No kidding. I moved here from Seattle two years ago and the food is much better here.

Anyone in the Bay Area area, go to Zachary's in Berkeley or Albany, best pizza this side of Chicago. Anyone who can still say they can't get a decent slice of pizza out here after trying Zachary's needs to check into a mental health clinic.

On a side note, when I saw the title I thought you were talking about California Pizza Kitchen which a lot of my friends go to and say its great. IMO, that indeed does suck.
 
I went to Comic-Con in SD and there was a great pizza place just a few blocks down from the convention center. It was a hole in the wall in the Gaslamp District with zero seating, but the pizza kicked ass.

If you ever find yourself in Sacramento then you MUST go to "Zelda's", they are the shiznit. Or, if you end up in San Francisco, then I highly recommend "Pasquale's" on Irving. Zachary's in Berkley is good, but just a bit too saucy for my taste. Zelda's has a flaky potato-bread-like crust that owns Zachary's any day.

...if you can't tell, I love me some pizza! :D
 
Ah, the water myth again. This has been analyzed to death and found wanting. Seriously. The big pizza chains have spent money on seeing if they could improve business by finding any special quality to a region's water they could adopt. They found nothing. It's just a little lie people tell themselves because it's normally the one ingredient that is local.

I've had pizza and bagels in every time zone of this continent. For every great slice I could find one down the street that was lacking in any attractive qualities. I came to realize that much of the enjoyment came along with the novelty of travel. One doesn't go to California for the pizza so it affirms your beliefs to condemn all California pizzerias for the failings of the small sample.

In my immediate vicinity I can find a wide range of bagel quality. My father ran his own deli when I was a small child so I've received a bit of a need to find the best. Western Bagel, the place that has been supplying many LA delis since the 50's is still the best. I end up with a bag from Noah's ever month because I received a gift card for one bag a month for a year from some gentile friend who don't know the difference. They aren't at all bad, it's just that Western Bagel's good are notably better.

I live in Berkeley, CA. I go to Zachary's all the time. Best fucking pizza!

I never been to California Pizza Kitchen. I think there is one in Emeryville if I do remember correctly.

I've enjoyed some meals from California Pizza Kitchen. The trick is to ignore the name and think of it as something other than pizza that merely has a few elements in common. CPK is essentially the fast food result of the nouvelle cuisine craze in the 80's. If they'd left the word pizza out of the name it would have avoided a lot of confusion.

Yeah, Zelda's is bomb, Luigi's ain't too bad either. Roma's is pretty good as well, also for some reason I like Original Pete's as well, I dunno why.

If you ever go to Santa Cruz check out Pleasure Pizza, Big J's or Pizza My heart. All three are really good, with Pleasure Pizza being my personal favorite.

I haven't been to that Zachary's you're talking about but I agree with the CPK assessment. First of all they charge you an arm and a leg for something that doesn't really make you full, and IMO ain't that tasty either. Just 'trendy' with all these strange pizza concoctions they have. I think that CA has more variety in food cuz of all the different kinds of people we have here so I would say that pizza probably isn't this place's culinary strength, but that's not to say the whole state doesn't have good pizza. We probably have better Pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup) than any other state in the country and that's good enough for me.
 
It's just a fact california style pizza sucks in comparison to east coast pizza, it's like no one there knows how to make it unless they;re making some trendy, weird ass, atkins-esque tripe.

My friend movied to cali a couple of years ago, when he came back for a visit the first thing on his mind was to get as much NY style pizza as he could get.

True, NY pizza is definitely awesome. When I visited NYC last November, the first day we stayed there, we walked to a pizzaria.
 
My favorite place to get pizza is my OWN OVEN. I know how to cook so its great to be able to make my own food instead of take out and fast food(though fast food and take out is SOOO good)
 
when i read the topic i thought it was talking about the california pizza kitchen place.. cause that place is good well.. the pasta i had was good.. but wow stayin in cali for practically two months.. i never did try any cali pizza.. does s. cal have any good pizza places then? o_O
