Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

I really liked the Force Awakens. I thought it started out really strong and it just got okay at the end. Near the end it felt like they were just trying to appease the old die hard fans with the original actors. I still like Joss Whedon work except for Age of Ultron, but I don't think that was all his fault. That movie felt like there were a lot of people who got their hands on it that shouldn't. Something obviously happened behind the scene that made Whedon not want to make another Avenger movie again. His first Avenger movie was probably the greatest Marvel studio movie they released so far, next would have to be the Guardian of the Galaxy.

Didn't realize a new Miss Fury series was starting until I happened to stumble on it on comiclist. I will definitely give it a chance, but I didn't like the first issue as much as the series from like 5 years ago. Hoping she puts the fury into Miss Fury soon.

Probably late to the party, but just read that Rebirth is going to feature a Chinese "Superman?" Am I obligated to pay full price or should I just put it on a pull list...tough call...

You think that's bad? There's a Superwoman to appease the SJWs.

Contrary to popular belief, I entirely support the Asian Superman. He isn't Kal-El, so it doesn't matter. I get upset when it is a classic character/secret identity who is race/age/gender swapped. I am also upset star wars got rid of the EU...

The SJWs got a Supergirl TV show, but I guess it is easier to complain about everything on the internet, then to tune in to support the show. You would think they would stand by their convictions and support gender equality by watching. I can't wait until their worlds are crushed when Hilary gets the nomination. They will then pout and not vote, rather than choose the lesser of two evils. They will find something else to be outraged by the next week anyway. I voted for Bernie in the primary, but odds are that he won't get the nomination. I love how they think everyone will work with him. The same people that called Obama a socialist (which he isn't) and would block anything he attempted to do is suddenly going to work with a person who calls themselves a socialist? Yeah right.

Bah - I just looked up Chinese Superman and am disappointed. I thought it was going to be the Superman level character who broke free of Chinese military control last year in the Suicide Squad comics. He was pretty cool.

I foresee this just being another coming of age for superpowered teen. I feel like we have enough of those right now with Spider-Gwen, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, etc. I guess I can't think of any good ones on the DC side, but I'm thinking it won't be for me. I dropped Ms Marvel after the evil Thomas Edison chicken volume.

Maybe I've finally gotten too old do read about high-school kids. I kind of a feel that way with anime now. 13 years ago I never thought it was weird for all these high-school kids to run around doing all this stuff, but now it just doesn't appeal to me trying to see kids studying to get into college, balance homework, and being home in time for bed.

I Think Invincible is the only comic that's done the whole coming of age suerhero comic right mostly because you see Mark grow from discovering his superpowers in high school to becoming a father. All mixed with wonderful brutal action and twists and turns.

And I still don't know what SJW means. Kinda don't care because after BvS and majority of New 52 being a waste of time and money (Snyder's Swamp Thing run, Animal Man, and Batman are real only standouts to me) and not worth making the whole universe and continuity more convoluted and messed up, I feel I can wait on trades/hardcovers for any of the stuff that becomes worth reading besides maybe Snyder Batman or something. So really, DC can do what they want, but meh on my end.

Neither do I. Social Justice Warrior sounds like a fuck ing superhero, like Captain America or Spider-Man or Superman.

I'm okay with a Chinese Superman. But I am seriously disappointed that it's not:

Secret Identity is a pretty good play on the theme of teen discovers powers, but isn't stuck in that phase of that person's life. I'm guessing the character will have a good arc and considering how the Morrison's run of Action Comics and Landis' American Alien is so good, I'm pretty optimistic considering I really liked Gene Yang's American Born Chinese. I'll probably be picking up his current Superman run as well.

Rebirth really interests me in general. I'll be following several DC titles I never read before. Of course, 2/3 of the DC books I have been reading are ending, so it all evens out.

Invincible is probably my favorite long term comic. It never seems very predictable which I like. I hate whenever it goes on hiatus. It was weird reading the "Reboot" comics from a few months back and seeing all the dead characters for 10+ years ago. I didn't get into the comic until probably 2008/2009 so even to me they've been dead for 7 years.

Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Batman were the best things to come out of the new 52. I did like the initial new 52 run on Wonder Woman too.

Oh it means Social Justice Warrior. I Knew that. I Think?

And anyone got any ideas when New York Comic Con passes go on sale?

Goddamn, that cliffhanger before the hiatus was ridiculous. It was the only time I ever felt "whoa, that's fucked up" and it didn't even need gore or anything, just the pain on Mark's face in those quiet panels were enough.

469 congressional seats are up for re-election. We can very well vote in people who will work with Bernie.

Good luck to all of us, but I don't think there will be much of a shift. I just hope the millennials that worship him as a cool grandpa will still vote democrat to keep the republicans out of office. I feel the whole campaign is more of a net phenomenon than anything.

I was as excited as the die hard Bernie supporters when Gore won the popular vote. After that election, I gave up hope until I saw Barack Obama speak locally. I said to the person with me, "he will be our next president". About 4 months later he gave a televised speech and people started buzzing about him.

Either Bernie or Hilary is fine by me. They will both get a a social barrier out of the way on paper (1st woman, 1st Jewish president).

On the topic of comics I am probably going to see BvS this weekend, so that will give me something new to bitch about. haha

My pickup:

Black Panther #1

Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #4

Mocking Bird #2

DC Comics Free Preview

I am pretty excited for the new rebirth.

I liked it, it's my first time reading any Black Panther stuff though so I can't really compare to anything.

Played the Wolf Among Us last week since it was free. Absolutely loved it, really enjoyed every part of it and haven't been that invested in a game in quite awhile, just like marathoning a finished TV show which it kinda was. Anyway, I hear it was actually a prequel they created for an existing comic series and wondering if it's of the same quality Wolf Along Us was? And is it complete? Would like to pick up a trade if it is and all collected in one.

Yeah - Fables is an excellent comic. It also just finished last summer. It is long though at 150 issues with multiple spin-off's.

Apparently there's a Walking Dead one shot called the Walking Dead: The Alien by Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin, it's only available digitally and you can pay any price for it:

The ending is pretty awesome.

I finally finished Fables. It was a bit of an undertaking and I only read the main series and a couple of the minis. I didn't read Jack of Fables b/c I find him annoying as a character. It was a pretty solid series. I recommended it to my friend that is a teacher for her high school students. I would also like BONE to be required reading for elementary students.

There are multiple trades, which I would recommend. Normally I prefer to read the comics, but the trades give enough cross story where you can avoid the spin offs if you'd like. They also released TWAU in comic form after they came out with the game. If you like the covers of the comics, they reissued/updated this: http://www.amazon.com/Fables-Covers-Art-James-Jean/dp/1401252818/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1461322709&sr=8-2&keywords=james+jean .

I'm playing catch up with comics right now (about 2 months behind or so). I am interested in Rebirth for sure.

I'm not sure i'm very excited for Civil War 2 honestly. I'm also dropping Amazing Spider-Man and New Avengers. I finally caught up on both and frankly they both are just boring me a lot. New Avengers feels too fluffy and Amazing Spider-Man just doesn't do anything for me and seems to drag on a bit. I'm also not a huge fan of the new Globe Trekking Peter being a CEO. It just doesn't interest me as much. May be dropping Uncanny X-men as well but i'm 2 issues behind so i'll catch up and see what I think about that.

Anything dropped gives me a better chance to pick up new DC Rebirth titles though I was already reading Batman and Superman Lois & Clark, so I'll continue to read those, with that Superman being in Superman and Action Comics. I'm likely going to check out Green Laterns as well since that inrigues me and I kind of need a cosmic comic replacement when Omega Men ends (so good this comic is getting....sad to see it sold so poorly).

Both Rebirth and Civil War II evoke little interest out of me. I'm barely getting more than Batman and Uncanny at this point and I just can't see either one of these pulling me into more titles.

Isn't pretty much every Marvel event now a variation of Civil War anyway. Seriously, as far back as Secret Invasion (which was right after original Civil War) there's been some aspect of hero vs hero. Some have been more obvious like Avengers v Xmen but damn near every crossover has it in some form or another.

Rebirth, no matter what PR-spin they give it, still just feels like "newer 52" (which they still haven't completely gotten a handle on 4 years later with their whole "well that's canon, that's not" pick and choose oddness). I'll give it to Batman though, aside from
deus ex machina memory-returning machine (patent pending)
, it's been pretty solid but with Snyder leaving Batman I'm a little concerned.

The big 2 in general just feel like they're treading water. The others seem to be coming out with a new title every month in effort to chase that Walking Dead/Saga speculators market. The new Star Wars comics had me really interested for a little while there but Vader Down ended up being a bit of a dud.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm reading more comics than ever. I'll be reading more DC titles thanks to Rebirth and my Marvel pull list keeps growing. I'm picking up 2 weeks' worth of books tomorrow and there will be 57 issues in total. The list of current Marvel titles I don't read is much shorter than the list of those I do read.

I'm reading more Image comics  and Archie then anything else these days. Though I can't deny reading Silver Surfer from Slott and Allred is most fun I've had reading any superhero title in awhile.

Finally caught up on Uncanny X-men.....decide to keep reading it. Also helped a bit that the artist was different in the most recent issue. Story is alright overall, and it doesn't overwhelm you with history of the characters, as this is the first time in a long time i'm consistently reading Marvel.

Black Widow was dropped though. I usually read comic's for their stories and characters and this one is failing on all fronts for me. It feels very shallow and just not for me. The art is pretty good, but when I can read a comic fully in about 2 minutes and it leaves no impact it's a drop to save money. I do hope it gets better though.

Pretty late but I'm reading Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier, and man, this is terrible. I don't know how you could mess up a premise so bad. You're given the set up to make the Winter Soldier the man on the wall who is supposed to go around taking out global threats and you turn it into some weird love story while taking drugs?  Man, what a blunder.

Free comic book day is next Saturday.  What are people planning to get? So far I am thinking of Captain America #1, Civil War II #1, Suicide Squad, and Serenity. Not sure what else.

I still need to ask how many books I'll be able to get, but there are only 3 that I consider must-haves: Civil War II, Captain America, and Suicide Squad. If I'm able to get more than 3, maybe The Tick, Bongo, or Archie?

The store I used to go to only allowed 3 per person. My current place told me yesterday that there is no limit other than no more than 1 copy of the same issue. So I could get 1 of everything.

I kind of want ROM #0 and maybe some of the sampler ones. I'm getting the two Marvel ones through DCBS already. I wanted to try that Bruce Lee comic as well so i'll likely get that at least. I'll just be passing on the manga stuff for sure since I already know those.

I visited three stores, could've visited a fourth for more variety, but I got what I wanted. One store had a b1g1 of equal or lesser price or a buy $50 worth of stuff get a $20 item discount on the next item. But I bought 6 $1 Marvel True Believer Comics. I also bought the last issue of Bart Simpson Comics, which I neglected to do so for months.

I didn't want Civil War II or Captain America, but I got it from the Midtown blind bag. I was sad to see that there wasn't an Uncle Scrooge this year. So I got Bob's Burgers, Bongo, the Phantom, Archie, and Korra. I didn't bother getting One Punch Man and Pokemon. Those back covers were such teases. I thought Alien would be one of the books this year, but it was a Serenity comic. :(

On second look, I probably should've gotten the Serenity Comic, since it was a Dark Horse Sampler. Oh well. http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/206?articleID=172440

Free Comic Book Day!!! This was my fisrt time amgoing to one and it was awesome! My local store had a grab bag for its loyal subscribers!! All gold and silver comics from FCBD except the kiddie books! Woohoo!!! So happy! I was only interested in civil war, rom and suicide squad. But i guess this was a great move from the store. Itll entice more of its subscribers to get the next set of books if the free ones catches their curiosity! Going to be a busy weekend. Hehe!

After being restricted to 3 comics each of the last 2 years at a store that closed in November, I was able to get all 50 books at Zero Gravity today. Thanks to my store membership, I got front of the line privileges as well!
