Crush's Memorial wrestling topic

RIP Brian Adams

15.jpg

April 14, 1964 ~ August 13, 2007

I went for the "Crush" topic as that's how Brian Adams came to fame, and to avoid unwanted posts the Brian Adams name might draw.

What more is there to say, that hasn't been said over and over? Seems we're having more tribute topics, than regular topics as of late. This is the wrestling life-style though, live fast, party like a rockstar and die young.

I liked Adams. I thought Crush was a great addition to Demolition, making them that much more unstoppable, although I was unaware (at the time) this was because of Ax's injury problems.

Adams was really a guy that saw a lot more success as part of a team or faction, and I thought that was too bad as he seemed to have the right look, and the size to be a top card guy. Alas, his in-ring work may have left much to be desired. Still, the Kona Crush was a great finisher.

Crush was a bit of an anomaly in the WWE. He went from face-painted member of heavy-metal Demolition, to a fun-loving Hawaiian, to an anti-American sympathizer to the original white member of the Nation of Domination, to a biker, before finally just becoming himself in WCW.

Let me just wrap-up by saying that I absolutely loved his feud with Doink, there were some really entertaining moments there, and I thought Kronik had one of the best looks of any tag team ever. Just a damn shame Brian Adams has joined the ever-growing list of wrestlers and former wrestlers to pass away far too young.

Kronik was one of the hardest things I've ever seen in wrestling.

It's a shame that WWE buried the shit out of them, in their one match -- Terry Taylor will even admit to this.

I still have no clue why they were brought in just to be released. It's not like one of their mothers was calling asking for a limo. So what their match sucked, and they were all look/no in-ring ability, Batista still has a job.

I really think if WWE had booked Kronik correctly they could've given Taker/Kane a good run and kept the tag division interesting.

There was two matches. The other one was on the SD before Unforgiven where they basically buried Kaientai within 2 minutes. I remember Funaki took a hell of a bump with their finisher. Maybe that had something to do with it?

I think I heard him address it in the Forever Hardcore documentary.

EDIT: Here's a letter sent to fans who attended the NWA Legends convention autograph session:

Folks, here's what happened with the whole TNA Trio fiasco.

First, I negotiated an agreement with Bill Behrens of TNA to use A.J. Styles, Christian Cage and Samoa Joe at this year's fanfest weekend. Per the terms of the contract, where I paid more to have them do additional things, each of the three were to take part in an hour of Photo Ops prior to the matches, wrestle, and then sign for an hour after the matches.

Many of you have told me the three were complete assholes to everyone they encountered. Well, my interaction with them was no different. Did they not want to be there? Do they really have that little regard for wrestling fans? What was irking them?

Well, folks, let me tell you. Per a conversation I had with Bill Behrens on Sunday afternoon (I tried repeatedly to contact him on Saturday evening and Sunday morning with no response,) the reason the guys were mad and failed to sign autographs afterwards was because my folks that had volunteered to pick them up at the airport failed to do so in a timely manner (Joe had to wait 20 minutes,) so they took a cab instead. Folks, read that again. These guys were p.o.'d at me for screwing up their airport pickups so they took that out on all of you and felt that was sufficient reason to not fulfill their obligations of the agreement negotiated months ago.

Joe was reminded about the post-match autograph signing after the 10-minute 3-way matchup, to which he replied "F*ck it!"

Might I add that per TNA's contract, all fees must be paid in advance. Since I'd already paid these guys prior to them arriving in Charlotte, there was no way to insure they would follow through on their commitments.

Providing ground transportation was my responsibility. I am sorry that Joe had to wait 20 minutes on his ride, and I'm sorry that Christian and AJ took a cab to the hotel, but I did reimburse him the $30 for cabfare, so what's the big deal? You're gonna be pissed all day and take it out on the fans?

I will admit that I did not provide their transportation back to the airport on Sunday morning. After the way they treated me -- and you -- the night before, I could've cared less had they had to walk to the airport.

I apologize for the post-match signing not taking place as scheduled. It wasn't for lack of effort on my part.

For those of you that have asked me how to contact the folks at TNA to complain, here's the info I have:

heck stevie still uses their song
The Static X - Love Dump song?

I never liked Crush in Demolition, and really didnt like him as the Hawaiian orange and purple Crush. But I loved the evil Hawaiian purple/silver Crush led by Fuji. Great feud with Savage.

I never knew who this guy was til he showed up on WCW and joined the NWO. The announcers were all "OMG that's BRYAN ADAMS!" and I was all "Who the fuck is Bryan Adams?" and it took me weeks to actually bother to look him up.

Anyone have any good matches featuring him? Not to shit on him, but he never really impressed me.

I was watching Fox Reality's new season of "Solitary" last night, and one of the contestants is Leroy Patterson, who people might remember from XPW or MTV's True Life: I'm A Backyard Wrestler. His federation "BYW" was also featured on those Best Of Backyard Wrestling videos as well.

the wrestling business brusn a body out pretty quick. very physically demaning, little to no time off from work , and no health care ( unless you pay for it yourself) its your basic meat grinder unless youre one of the lucky few in the top spots , the few of them that there are. the lowest rung player on many pro sports teams probably makes more money and gets treated better and supported more than many of the mid card to upper mid card wrestlers.

and from what ive read vince gets way with it by calling wrestlers independant contractors. it sucks that with all these deaths nobody is bothering to examine vinces employment practices. liek firing pregnant women , looking the other way to drug and steroid use, and i wont even touch the sexual scandals. it sucks because many wrestlers wrestle because they love it not for the money but they dont get treated ay better than slaves at times.

Matt Sydal is telling people close to him that he will sign with WWE for a developmental deal. Things could always change but he seems to have made up his mind. ROH, Japan, and TNA had all offered him contracts but he's decided to go for his dream.

Hey, London's first match on Smackdown was a main event, WWE Title match with Brock Lesnar. :p

Oh, and my tape didn't record Smackdown for whatever reason. Anyone know where I can find it online? I need a DVR.

If you're familiar with the torrent protocol, I recommend first xtremewrestlingtorrents.net then pwtorrents.net. You might need invitations, not sure.. check.

If you're not familiar with torrents, utorrent is probably the best client for windows. Their site also has a great FAQ section. Also, check the torrent protocol wiki.

I wondered last night if Khali using the double claw on Batista was a tribute to Crush, or just accidental? Given that fact that it's Khali, I'm betting on the latter

I just got some pretty cool news.

Christian Cage and Rhino are going to be at 3D Smoothies next month signing autographs. The owner of the gym next store told my sister they are also trying to get Hulk Hogan to do a signing in January.

So if I'm lucky you could see photos of me with all three :D

No can do, BROTHER, I am going to ask him if he wouldn't mind giving me the fingerpoke of doom in the photo.

I doubt he would be in a joking mood if I told him some guy off the internet says "you suck" first.

jesse ventura was talking about making a union for pro wrestlers. that idea ended when vince bought him off by paying him a crapload of money to be the ref of summerslam 2000(?) it might have been 1999, where mick foley won the strap and dropped it the next day to HHH.

No one is holding a gun to the wrestlers head and forcing them to do this line of work(it least not in most cases). You can put all of this on vince for his lousy working conditions. Yes, almost all wrestlers take steroids or amphetamines to bulk up and dull the pain. It is hell on the human body.

That list blows.
Chris Candito died of a blood clot.
Yeah, that isn't the only thing wrong with that list.

Big Boss Man - massive heart attack
Rick Rude - heart failure
Terry Gordy - heart attack
Brian Pillman - arteriosclerotic heart disease with left ventricular hypertrophy

Shohei Baba - 61

He died of cancer (bowel cancer?), not really of anything related to pro-wrestling. He could've been an accountant and would've likely still died at 61. That list unnecessarily amplifies the tragedy of these men and women's deaths.

Saturday WO news update - http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/wo/news/headlines/default.asp?aID=20476

Mickey Grant, a WCCW producer, will be on Geraldo's FNC show tonight talking about the company and his "Gentleman's Choice" documentary about Chris Adams' life. Memphis Wrestling did a 4.0 rating, with a 5.0 quarter when Sid was on.
..................

I can't wait to see Mickey Grant's appearance on Geraldo, as he was fantastic on Heroes of World Class. The Gentleman's Choice movie looks terrific - basically appearing to be what Heroes of World Class would have been if it had just focused on one person. Hopefully it gets a national DVD release like Heroes of World Class did.

F4W Saturday news update - http://www.f4wonline.com/content/view/4039/105/

Stacy Keibler will be appearing on October Road on ABC, TNA did a 1.1 for Thursday's show, and Bryan and Chyna are scheduled for Tuesday's Nancy Grace show for a piece that is set to take up the entire show. Kennedy did an extensive interview with the UK Sun - http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2003560001-2007380340,00.html
........................

The Kennedy piece is fantastic, and easily the most revealing thing he's done yet. I'm glad that Stacy's post-wrestling career is going well, and hopefully she'll do more than just guest spots in the future.
------------------

Geraldo's show is starting a bit late due to well collapse issues, and the teaser states that "stee-roids" will be the focus. It already sounds tremendous.

They ran a quick rundown of the wrestlers' deaths, cited the Observer's rundown of premature deaths. Mickey's on and says that due to injectable steroids not showing up in the system after 48 hours, the only thing WWE can really do to ensure that they're steroid-free is test every day. He also states that WWE has nearly 80 wrestlers, and that they're usually millionaires. He says the steroid look became popular in the '90s, and that the industry is in denial. ....and that's it. Very brief, and the "Gentleman's Choice" piece wasn't mentioned outside of Mickey's graphic and a glimpse of its DVD case.

Ok I went through that entire list and found the causes of death for nearly everybody. It ranges from everybody from midget wrestlers to refs.

Man, whats up with the Von Erich's, suicide for all?

Amazing how most are suicide/drug related. A lot of heart attacks as well(which i guess can be drug related, whether they be narcotic or prescription).

I met Brian Adams a long time ago at a Smoothie King here in Tampa (back in the WCW days). He seemed like a really nice guy. But it's hard to judge people's current personalities from their past (ala Benoit).
Man, whats up with the Von Erich's, suicide for all?
Close.

Jack Adkisson - electrocuted/drown as a kid
Kevin Von Erich - only living member left
David Von Erich - heart attack caused by ruptured intestines
Kerry Von Erich - suicide after breaking probation
Mike Von Erich - suicide by drug overdose
Chris Von Erich - suicide

You should check out the wrestling documentary Heroes of World Class Wrestling. It's apparently one of the best and follows the rise/fall of the Von Erich family

Yeah, they do that for SNME.

Same here. Well, maybe not on that level because they don't want to bury Matt but at least, if it's going to be staged, don't make Matt wear that stupid-ass headguard. It made him look like a wimp going into the match.

Incredibly enjoyable SNME. Austin-Vince was a blast, Hardy-Holyfield was hilarious thanks to Buffer's ridiculous intro of MVP, which brought back some Nitro memories. The ECW tag was good, although I found the ending to be odd, as Morrison's really losing a lot to Punk, and I can't see him losing the title due to that, but Punk could really use the big win right now.
