argh............

yes everyone of us have it... even if you say no, your head still sheds dead cells.

I have tried H&S and other shampoos and nothing is working.

Even going to a dermatologist who perscribed me some medicated lotion didn't work :( The stuff he gave me actually turned my hair light grey :(

Other than shaving my hair off, any suggestions? I know stress plays a part of the problem.

Too noticable when you have black hair and your dandruff is white.

shaving your head off must be a last resort effort... shaving your hair i can see, but your head off no.

I used to have the same problem. No matter what special shampoo the doctor would throw at me, I would still get major dandruff. I went back to trying Head and Shoulders this year, and it seems to be working pretty good.

It's Citrus Breeze, if you can't see the small print.

must be new, never seen it.

hey did the stuff your doc gave you to use on your hair make your hair turn a bit grey or was it hard to wash out leaving some residue?

Nope. I've tried about 2-3 prescription shampoos, and have never had that problem. I know the instructions on most of them have you leave the shampoo in your hair for a few minutes before you wash them out. Maybe you're washing your hair too often? If it's shorter, you can wash every other day.

Maybe you have a bacterial problem. When I was in the service I got flaky skin where my nose meets my face, right in the corners. They gave me an anti-bacterial, which takes care of it for a few months. They said the same medicine is used for dandruff problems.

It was a red gel. Forgot the name of the Rx, though.

yea the instructions say leave on for 5 minutes before washing it out....... nothing like white dry goo in your hair ON top of your dandruff :(

Its my understanding that you are suppose to switch up the dandruff shampoos because they have different formulations.

Also, avoid anything that has alcohol in it; Certain types of hairspray have alcohol in it which will dry the scalp. There are lot of websites out there that will offer tips on fighting dandruff. Google is your friend.....

I had some bad dandruff when I was younger. I used Head & Shoulders and it didnt seem to get rid of it but then I started using H&S with Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. Appy H&S, message, rinse then apply J-J and do the same. I have been free of dandruff since and my hair is soft...but then I started shaving my head soon after.

I had bad dandruff about five years ago, and anti-dandruff shampoos by Head & Shoulders and Neutrogena didn't seem to do much good. I went to a dermatologist, and he suggested a shampoo called "Nizoral."

It worked wonders! I use it about three times a week, and I haven't had dandruff in years.

Nizoral tends to be the best working kind and most recommended by doctors. It's got some ingredient none of the others have that fights the fungus that causes it.

I've had it before in varying degrees, Pantene's dandruff formula worked okay, but the best thing I found was actually just starting to use conditioner more often seemed to help it a lot. As far as that goes I felt like Infusium 23's Intense Infuser was the best, but haven't used it in a long time because it leaves some buildup in the hair which makes dying the hair a little harder.

I got told to use any products with Tea Tree in it but it never helped, only seriously burned my eyes in the shower (I'm really sensitive to the smell appearently), but maybe it will help for you?

I used to get a ton of dandruff until I switched from Head and Shoulders to T-Gel.

It smells like shit but works unbelievably well.

seems that H&S works for some and not for others (me)... I mean I can scratch my head and my underfinger nails will have some flakes (yea gross I know)

How severe is this? Is it small flakes or large oak-like flakes or what? I also recommend Nizoral.

EDIT: Also, don't be grossed out. Dandruff happens to so many people it's probably impossible to track. Some people are just better at hiding it than others. Don't worry about it.

Do you use shampoo and conditioner? I use suave and don't have anythign noticable. Also, maybe oil your scalp with vasilene or some other kind of hair oil.

Head and Shoulders sucks balls. It made my dandruff worse.

I currently use Selson Blue, which I found works the best for me.

The other two I've used in the past that have worked well are
Denorex and
Nizoral.

i use normal head and shoulders works fine... a bit part also is not scratching or touching your head... and use Gel that way people think its just the gel crusted over

Either it's the Garnier Fructis anti-dandruff shampoo-w/-conditioner I use or that I've moved away from my parents, but I haven't had dandruff since moving to college.

Truth be told, I think a lot of it is for the most part stress or weather. I say weather because when I go visit my parents, I start to get major dandruff again, but nor am I using my normal shampoo, so who knows if it's that. Also, high school was infinitely more stressful than college.

While living at home, I tried a wide variety of anti-dandruff shampoo including Selsen Blue, Neutrogena T-Gel, Denorex, Head & Shoulders, Suave, etc. I think the T-Gel was as hardcore I got with treatments, and it wasn't very helpful.

I still get a bit flaky every so often these days, but I suspect it's a combination of the Florida humidity and the amount of hair stuff I use to keep my long hair sorted out. Still, I can now toss around my hair without fear of flaking. Back in high school I had average to somewhat short-length hair, for what it's worth. I could just shake my head and cause a tiny blizzard.

well its small flakes, but as soon as I even slightly ruffle my hair, its snow time :( Very visible in the mirror so I take it anyone can see it too. Now if I scratch I sometimes can feel like a dry part and sometimes blood comes out (very small amount) ..so my guess is that my scalp is extremly dry dispite drinking water every day.

Interesting. Just ruffling your hair, huh? And your dermatologist's treatment doesn't work?

Maybe time to get a new dermoboy if he isn't even doing his job.
either that or go blonde
But that wouldnt stop the dandruff and would only probably weaken your hair.

I switch between Nizoral and generic T/Gel. They seem to work on and off. I'm just glad that Nizoral can be bought over the counter. Of course, they still make presciption strength. I also know that the T/Gel also got rid of some psoriasis on other parts on my body too. I used to have it real bad across my belly, but luckily it cleared up with that stuff

Head and Shoulders helped me out in middle school right around puberty was when mine got out of control, I didn't even notice it until a girl I was interested in called me "FlakeBoy". Went through one bottle and never had the problem again. Though to think about it I do leave the shampoo in for a little longer than most. Also look into getting a water softener if you don't have one, I hear that helps a lot with leaving more moisture in your skin and I would presume the skin on top of your head as well.

yea i heard hard water may be a problem as well... how do you test for this?

ok i've made a list of shampoos thanks to fellow caggers and I am going to try them out to see what happens...hopefully they won't make my hair even more grey :(
