DEAD PS3 Hard drive upgrade Seagate 320GB 7200.4 $59.99
Aren't 7200 rpm harddrives supposed to cause more heat than 5400s? This is a tempting deal.
They do cause more heat and the loading performance gained by them is little as 1-5%. Great deal though despite it being Seagate. Sad to see no 2 year replacement plan, sounds risky. >=P
I am waiting for this to go a little further down in price: WD 500gb 5400 RPM

I have that same HD for my PS3. Its been at the same price for over a year, I wouldn't hope too much on that price drop.

There is a 3 year manufacture warranty, though.

Like others, I recommend a Western Digital 5400 rpm.

I need an upgrade for my Laptop, but this will be too small. Hopefully they have a sale on some of the 500 GB ones or the 640 GB one.

They do indeed create more heat, but the difference is negligible.
The RPM does not create much of a difference in load times or boot up times, the cache size does however.

wow, so its not going down anytime soon I guess. Guess I will get it within the next month then. But I also need an external hard drive to transfer my 60gb data over to the new HD. So that is more cost.
what is the original cache on the PS3 hd?
I'm sorry, i meant using 8 mb vs 16 caches in general. I wondered if the 16mb cache was worth the extra dough.
Can any CAGs comment on their experience as to whether the 8mb vs 16mb cache difference is THAT important?
It is if you care about speed and opening of applications. Its used as read ahead buffer.

Yes.

But, I wondered how it fares on a PS3.

PS3 can not take advantage of the 16MB cache the way a PC can. So go with the 8MB.

Well, I upgraded from the stock 60GB to a 7200RPM 16MB cache HDD and the difference was very noticeable. Every game that was loaded into the HDD in it's entirety loaded for me quicker than everyone else. The boot up speed also sped up by 5 or so seconds. Load times and install times are all much quicker than stock.

I remember reading that the PS3 will only recognize up to 250GB of any hard drive installed. You can use larger but the extra space is unallocated. I came across this information in a hard drive upgrade article back around the PS3's launch. Can anyone verify this? I was hoping it was only a firmware limitation therefore allowing the size limit to be increased. Perhaps it's a temperature issue as larger drives do in fact dissipate greater volumes of heat.

Can anyone with an upgraded HD and over 250gb of stored info confirm or deny this?

This is an older video mentioning the 250GB size limit -

This isn't the original article that I came across the information so the limit may have very well been the case once upon a time.

i havent upgraded my 60gb yet but my friend put a 320 in his and it works fine. said he had like 285gb of space or something like that. i am still waiting on a better sale than this. dont really want a 7200rpm drive because i do believe in the heat issue it can cause w/ them.

Problems with this:

1) $60 is pretty par for the course for a 320gb 2.5" SATA drive so this isn't really a deal.

2) Seagate's are pretty hit or miss. If they work they work, if they don't they will crap out on you within a couple months. WD is generally a safe bet, as is Hitachi.

3) Do not buy a 7200RPM drive for your PS3. It doesn't improve load, save, or startup times over a 5400RPM drive and creates a fair bit more heat. I know people like to think the PS3 is an indestructible tank but it's not. They do overheat and putting a component in your system that runs abnormally hot is not a good call.

how about save $50+ and delete all the game data for the games that you will never play again...? socom:confrontation, in my case, freed up 2 gigs or so. unless you want to put all of your media into your ps3, but I still see an external hd as a better option.

My main reason to upgrade is, 60gbs is not enough to store my fav Prono on my ps3. Although I would only need about 2-3 mins, but having them on my harddrive ready to go is a luxury I would love to have

False... I upgraded to 500gb and used 120gb so far, it's showing 300gb something free (it doesn't add up to a full 500gb, but it's around the 465gb mark).

Yeah, that's one way to manage the spaces on the hdd, but for me, i keep every game installs, even the obscure ones like Hannah Montana. Reason being, if a friend comes over and wants to know how do you do this or how you get that trophy etc., i can always show him/her w/o installing or loading game saves... Think of game as arts, do you ever discard your old drawings or paintings? No right? Gaming is pretty much like that. To make a game is art but so does playing a game :)

For media files, i totally agree, you can dump them on an external hdd and they work like a charm via USB.
