So far I have played about an hour of the game and I think it is pretty good so far. The implemetation of the Blazin Moves is really cool. Just before the KO hit, the screen freezes for a still shot then BAM! The controls are slightly stiff but are nice. Interaction with the environments is VERY satisfying. Nothing like throwing some fool head first into a pole or tossing them into a pool table. I'll have more to comment on as I get deeper into the game. I am impressed because this is not just a cookie cutter sequel from what I can tell so far.

I'm not a fan of rap or the whole hip-hop culture by any means, but I'm enjoying this game. (forgive me Scrubking!) It's a bit hard in the story mode because it forces you to start off so weak, but I've found that playing a bunch of one on one matches in the regular (read: non-story mode) battle mode is good training. I was apprehensive going into the fight against Ice-T because I had read that a lot of people had trouble with him, but I beat him on my first try, mainly because I had played so much in the battle mode.

My biggest complaints:

-No custom soundtracks. Horseshit.

-Computer AI can be incredibly cheap.

-As per the AKI tradition, countering is something that requires more luck than skill. I really can't see why that one company can't figure out that the player needs to feel more in control when it comes to counters.

-Worst. Instruction Manual. Ever. I've considered writing EA and blasting them for the piss-poor manual that came with this game. A whopping 12 pages, with exactly 2 graphics dedicated to the actual controls. The rest just hypes up the game modes and licensed shit that was included in the game.

I outgrew the majority of hiphop myself. Although I do still enjoy some good groups like Outkast, Nappy Roots, The Roots, and Tribe Called Quest (and some others). I like the atmosphere of the game though. Whipping ass to the songs is fun. It just works well. It's similar to the GTA games. It's fun to play a role.

when i first started playing, i thought the AI was really cheap, but then i realized that each character has a certain fighting pattern/style. not sure if you've gotten to him yet, but there's this guy named baby chris, and he can be unbelievably hard. but after losing a match, they give you a hint on what to to do. so i tried out their advice, and guess what? it worked. everyone's got a weakness.

and i can tell you right now, david banner was probably the easiest because he just goes nuts and swings, but he never blocks.

I gota agree with PsyClerks weak points.

The other minor problem imho is the framerate for the framerate whores, even during the cutscenes it just slows down out of no where. Should have been fixed for release, but oh well.

I also wish more and more companies would stick to their promises, if you know what I mean. No online play for this game was a letdown and would have made the replay value even higher.

The CAW isn't as deep either, but last years game didn't even have a CAW, so I'm just waiting for AKI to make it better in Def Jam 3 (Hopefully there will be one).

Outside of what I just said, Def Jam: Fight For NY is a awesome sequel that pretty much improves upon everything. Fans of all the previous AKI engines will find this one even more satisfying. Worth your hard earned money if your a wrestling/fighting fan, especially if your into the rap genre.

Its an awesome game..i played it for the first time last night...I'm a big fan of hip hop and rap and i recognize everyone in the game and their faces are very true to their life counterparts...I wish they wouldve worked on the countering a bit more...I still think there should be a button to counter grapples and a button to counter strikes....But overall its a very fun game especially when playin with 4 people.
Its a great game though that might be because i love hip hop/rap music
I think that helps get more people into it. Like I said, I don't listen to hip-hop much (I'm an old fart I guess, lol) except for select groups but I heard of the majority of the people in the game. I think it is a good game regardless and the music fits perfectly. It's really the only kind of music that would work with this game IMO.

It similar to the NASCAR games (which I think are pretty fun). I may not buy country music but it fits the game and I wouldn't have it anyother way.

I was kind of hoping there would be an option to use ripped tracks but I can understand why they didn't do it. This is supposed to be Def Jam and they don't want Bad Boy and Shady Records stealing their thunder if someone uses those instead.

I beat the game in 3 1/2 hours... I got it two nights ago. It's a great game w/ a great story line! Crow is a bitch though... Just to let you know after you beat the game you can still play other matches to make your guy better. It's a lot better than Vendetta

i HATE THE GAME IT SUCKS

lol that is what i was saying 30 mins into the game. I still dont like the idea that you cant by the chic pictures like in the first one and the AI is damn cheap. I mean it sucks when they can toss you into a jukebox pick you up do it again and you lose.....

Im like 2 hours into it and im getting the hang of the controls its okay and i do like it but i liked the first one 10x more. I glad i never opened up the copy i got at target (sold it to ebgames for 30) its a nice rental but i cant see owning the game with so many Better games coming in the next 90 days

Overall i give it a B- too hard to start out but it gets better then longer you play (that is if you chose to stick around that long)

(really really wants the new paper mario game. and WOOO found megaman battle network 4 red sun for 6 bucks )

I'm gonna wait for a pre-owned version to show up before I jump on this one. The lack of online play prevents me from buying this one right away.

well this game doesnt play as close to the n64 games as the original did. they mapped the controls a lil diff and i really dont like that. aside from that its also alot harder.

the way you can buy clothes and stuff though is awesome...

and where the helli s dmx?

I got this game as well and thought I was the only one having trouble with Ice-T.....I went to sleep mad after not being able to beat him...Then after almost getting into a bar fight and smashing a corona bottle on some assholes head I was able to do it in this game and currently 30% into it.....I hate the ever so slow development point progression and cost to upgrade, Some seemingly impossible rewards/trophys to unlock (ex. earn $10,000 in 1 match---that's not happening), luck required to counter grapples and attacks, No LL Cool J (when I think Def Jam I think of him) or DMX, and a lot of busta/no name people that are in it like Dan G among some other cheap AI scrubs...

Just a note for those that haven't played it. This is NOT a wrestling game. It's more of a fighting game that has adapted the old AKI wrestling engine. It moves much faster than say, No Mercy on N64, but at the same time builds off of that game's engine.

I'm about 60% into the game right now. The cheap AI is starting to piss me off. Surprisingly, I usually wind up trouncing the guys that other players seem to have big problems with (Ice-T, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Baby Chris, team matches, etc). My troubles always crop up with the scrubs for some reason.

As was stated before, each opponent has a weakness. My trouble comes in when I come up against a guy whose weakness involves me countering his attacks. I'm all out of lucky rabbit's feet, so I'm usually toast.

I am 50% through. It gets easier as you spend points to upgrade skills. I would upgrade skills before spending a bunch of point on Blazin moves. If you run up against Kickboxers or Streetfighters, I find you don't have to worry as much about countering grapples. I just try to get ready to block.

Damn, I was gonna pop Fable in today but now I want to beat Def Jam first. I'm not sure what I'll do now, lol.

Yeah, blazing moves can be too expensive. As you progress you get a lot more dev points, but your skills cost more to train as well. I have upper body almost maxed out, and it costs 5000 points to get one quarter of a full bar (one tick mark).

I would recommend getting a second style at least though. Having two or even three fighting styles increases your moveset.

BTW, I'm at the end now. Get ready for the hardest match ever.

I agree about fighting styles. I got Wrestling, Kick boxing and StreetFighting. Very Satisfying.

So far I am balancing my skills but I add to health more than anything.

I finished story mode about noon today. Some of the gimmick matches are tough. The ring of fire match can be tough if the computer decides to get cheap (knock down, pick up, grapple, repeat). Same goes for the window match. Snoop Dog is also a very cheap boss, somewhere between Onslaught (from Marvel vs Capcom) and the last boss on DOA3.

I am a big fan of rap and hip-hop and Def Jam totally captures each fighters personalities perfectly. The game itself is awesome and took me awhile to get used to the controls, but overall I'm having a good experience.

Man, I just must be really awesome at this game, because those matches were no problem for me. I had more trouble on the tag team match then the ring of fire or the snoop dogg match.

Snoop is definitely one of the cheapest bosses ever. I would try to grapple him while he's performing a taunt, and then he would counter that. It took me a few tries to defeat him, but in the end I beat him.

i am at the part where i just beat ice-t...i'm playin on medium and i lost twice...both were at the first match against trick  since i was just gettin used to the game..after trick, no losses yet...ice-t and trejo were pretty tough for me, but i beat them :)

great game :), even greater b/c hiphop/rap is my fav music genre :p

I have to admit I thought this game would be another crappy wrestling game with rappers, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story mode is engaging and I love the character creation and custimization. Lots of fun. I'm up to the point where you fight Danny Trejo (who I'm a big fan of) in the subway station.

Also I do enjoy beating the piss out of people to the tune of momma said knock you out. That's just fun.
I'm up to the point where you fight Danny Trejo (who I'm a big fan of) in the subway station.
Trejo:"Say goodbye, bitch!"
(pulls trigger)*click, click*
Trejo:"...."
Hero:"Goodbye, bitch!"

Yeah, I think the game is decent.....I'm about 30% or more into it already though. I think i've been playing for around 4 hours. I think I just played the big tag-team tournament where you choose your partner. (I maybe a little farther actually)

It's ok...worth the $25 I paid for it from EAstore.com. I would not pay $50 for it though

I'm 50% in and I love this game! The environmental interaction is cool, the Blazin' moves are fun to watch. The fighters do have their own personas. I just got to the Destruction match yesterday and it was cool smashing up Busta's ride. I'm really impressed with the storyline. I've been laughing out loud at some of it. And they did a great job with the fighter customization and I love how your character shows up in the cutscenes exactly as you have him outfitted.

I really like this game. I wasn't too impressed with the original Def Jam, but this game is great.

It has it's issues (controls, frustrating AI, etc.), but overall, it's a nicely polished and very FUN game.

IMO I don't think it received TOO MUCH hype like other games. It was a "come-out-of-nowhere" hit like Chronicles of Riddick.
Maybe it could be considered a "sleeper hit?"

co-sign with guilewasnk. this series isn't trying to be the best fighting game in the world, but it's fun as fucking hell. the next one could use some better customization options, some custom music tracks on xbox, more 4 player matches... and some might disagree with me, but sometimes having the fake characters is annoying. i seriously would have preferred more rappers instead of the fictional fighters. i don't like half the rappers on this game, but it would still be cool nonetheless. and where the heck is chuck d?

definitely on the right pace. and even with all the rappers on it, they're not shoving it down the throats of the mainstream public.

i agree, there should be more real artists...

before i got ffny, i hadent played vendetta yet, so i thought ALL the characters would be real rappers...but when i looked in a strat guide, i saw some fakes..and some rappers named differently (ex: meth as blaze)

o well..still a great game :D

I beat the story like 2 days ago and it was great. Im going through it a second time and its still great. The renaming of the guys is really stupid. I mean who the hell calls Busta, Magic? thats just stupid. Some of the fictional characters are ok like nyne but some are stupid. Also why couldnt they make carmen electra hotter like IRL, because they made lil kim hot as hell in there but IRL she aint all that.

It's not about them being called that, it's a character they are playing. It's kind of a wrestling thing where they can lplay at being a badass fighter. Because come one, Snoop Dogg really aint a streetfighting type. He goes toe to toe with Bonecrusher and it aint gonna be pretty.

"I will destroy you! I will destroy you! Hahahahaha..." - Bonecrusher
Actually it's "You will be destroyed! YOU...WILL BE...DESTROYED!"
My bad. I was laughing too hard to remember the actual quote.

Played a little more last night....it is growing on me, but now I just want to beat it. I think after that, I probably won't touch the game that much. I suppose I could go through it again, but I have enough other games to keep me occupied. It's not THAT difficult, although can be annoying at times (this is MEDIUM difficulty)

I guess I'll stick to my sports games after this title

David Banner was funny. It was cool how he was dressed similarly to the Hulk. The first time I saw his Blazin move I was laughing my ass off.

it kind of rules that henry rollins is in the game. i had no idea he was going to be in it, so imagine my surprise when i start the game and there he is. it just totally sucks that there's no custom soundtracks, since you can't have some black flag playing during his segments (even though it would probably be keith morris era black flag, but still). oh, and the rest of the music sucks, too.

wow... im playing a TON of this game... im ALMOST done but having trouble fighting the 2 on 2 match twoards the end when your partner has like half health... im tryin to keep this spoiler free.... i found the story kinda intruiging :)

Yeah, the game seems to be moving rather quickly for me now. I'm 86% done now. I think I finished about 50% of the game yesterday in just a few hours.

Good game....just not TOO TOO long, but I guess that's about on par with most games.

I think I may trade it away after I beat it though. Don't really see TOO much replay in it, unless you have a lot of friends comign over to play it.

That's the problem with most fighting games. The replayablility sucks. Hopefully the next Def Jam will be online and eliminate that problem.

Yeah I always love fighting games for abotu a month then almost never look at them again unless a friend comes over. Kinda sucks...especially with Soul Caliber and Virtua Fighter.

Dude.. I got this game at 9PM last night.

It's 3PM the following afternoon, and I've played it less than seven hours or so.. and I beat it. I beat the game that quick.

That sucks. I'm going to get XMen Legends.

Yep, I beat the game too.....did not play it 7 hours straight or whatever, but it probably took me that long....kinda short. I will trade it in at GameRush if they give me $30-$35 for it.

I finished the story mode last night, now have bonus matches....I'm kind of disappointed in the story especially the ending...just like most games...hey stealthy that 2 vs. 2 match sucks b/c Blaze (who by the way is TERRIBLE and begins with less than half health,---He rarely even uses is blazin' moves when he can---I'd rather have Ice-T as a partner anyday) is one of the many cheap AI tactics used, like when you get whacked in the beginning and like a quarter of your health or more is already gone....Not fun in my opinion....Don't feel much rewarded playing this game, (a couple of those trophies seem impossible especially 25 grapple moves in a game lucky to get 15) for me other than a few characters and arenas but don't know if I want to trade it in though....
